NO SEW VERSION OF TRIMWe know some of you don’t enjoy the process of sewing together your knitting project so we thought we would offer you a second option. It isn’t that one is the ‘correct’ way or that one is better than the other it is totally a personal preference.

Using 4½mm needles and correct yarn cast 7 sts.Starting halfway along one edge of afghan work as folls:Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, K5, Sl 1, pick up and knit 1 st from afghan edge, psso.Row 2: Knit. These 2 rows set the trim patt and knitting into the afghan.Special note: you may not need to work into every edge st of the afghan when attaching the trim, this will be approximately 2 out of every 3 sts.Work to first corner of afghan and cont as folls:Work as given for sew on version of the trim noting that when working mitred corners you are not working into the afghan.

MAKING UPJoin cast on and cast off edges together using mattress stitch. In order to avoid this small seam you could cast on using scrap yarn and a provisional cast on, which you would then pull back and join to the end of your g st edging using the three needle cast off method (or using Kitchener stitch if you are comfortable using this technique).

FINISHED SIZESCompleted Afghan measures approx 139 cm (54½ in) wide by 177 cm (69½ in) long, including trim.Completed Oblong Cushion measures approx 114 cm (45 in) by 57 cm (22½ in). Completed Small Cushion measures approx 57 cm (22½ in) by 57 cm (22½ in).

EXTRASFor the Small Cushion a 57 cm (22½ in) by 57 cm (22½ in) cushion pad.For the Oblong Cushion a 114 cm (45 in) by 57 cm (22½ in) cushion pad.

OPTIONAL EXTRASZip measuring approx 51 cm (20 in) in length.Backing Fabric (Afghan only) approx 300 cm (118 in), using fabric widthways.

MAKING UPSewing togetherMake sure all of your squares have been blocked to 19 cm (7½ in) by 19 cm (7½ in) before starting to sew them together.Following the relevant diagram for either the Afghan, Oblong Cushion or Small Cushion, begin to sew your squares together using mattress stitch (please see our video tutorial [link here]. Once you have completed sewing together your squares we have some helpful hints and options to keep in mind whilst finishing your chosen Kaffe project:CushionsFor both Cushions, with right sides together, sew back of cushion to front along 3 sides, insert cushion pad and join remaining side.TIP: It may be an idea to add a zip to the final side of your cushion, rather than sewing up all 4 sides as our Pure Wool Worsted yarn is superwash it would be easier to take out the cushion pad to wash.

However if sewing all side of the cushion remember to keep some yarn spare to re-sew your 4th side together after washing.Making Cushion padsAs the cushion size for the Oblong Cushion is an unusual one, here are some options to consider:

- Make your own cushion pad by cutting two pieces offabric size 114 cm (45 in) by 57 cm (22½ in), sewing up 3sides and then stuffing with toy stuffing/feathers.

- Order cushion pad to size from a made to measure cushionretailer.

- Alternatively use 2 cushion at size 57 cm (22½ in) square, open one side of each cushion and then re-sew these toopen ends together to create one cushion double the size.

AfghanTIP: You can also add backing fabric onto the afghan as we have, using some of Kaffe’s very own fabric.Trim backing fabric pieces to fit knitted section (leaving trim exposed), adding a seam allowance of approx 2 cm (1 in) along all edges. Fold seam allowance to WS along all edges of backing fabric. Lay backing fabric onto knitted piece with WS facing and sew backing fabric in place along all four sides. The fabric that we used to back the photographed Turquoise Version is from the Kaffe Fassett Woven Stripes Collection - Caterpillar Stripe, shade WCATERX-AQUAX.Here are our suggested fabrics to use for the other colourways:Red VersionFrom the Kaffe Fassett Woven Stripes Collection - Caterpillar Stripe, shade QWCATER-EARTH.Brown VersionFrom the Kaffe Fassett Woven Stripes Collection - Exotic Stripe, shade WEXOTIC.PURPL.Pastel VersionFrom the Kaffe Fassett Woven Stripes Collection - Exotic Stripe, shade QWEXOTI.MIDNI.

Kaffe Fassett Knit-alongTips Sheet

www.knitrowan.com

Here are a couple of helpful tips to keep in mind when beginning to knit your squares for the Kaffe Knit-along.

Carrying yarns:It is a good idea, where possible, to carry your yarn up the sides of your work to save time on sewing in your ends once the piece has been knitted. If you see the image below, ‘section A’ shows the stripes knitted using yarn A and yarn B. When you have worked rows 1 and 2 with yarn A you will be ready to join in yarn B, however you will need yarn A again on rows 5 and 6. When you join in yarn B you will loop yarn A around yarn B to hold in place whilst working the 2 rows of yarn B. Whenyou come back to the last stitch of row 4 if you loop yarn A around yarn B then Yarn A will be ready for you to work againon rows 5 and 6. Now you will be working in yarn A you will need to carry yarn B up the side until you reach ‘section B’(Row 12) and you are able to break off yarn B and leave this end ready to sew in at the end. You will not need to break off yarn A as this is used further in the square, see ‘section B’.In ‘section B’ you will now be working in yarns A & C but carrying the yarn up 4 rows. Work in the same way as ‘section A’.At the end of ‘section B’ break off yarn A then join in yarn C when required and carry these 2 yarns up the side to the end.

Make one and increase square versions:The images below show you the difference in the edges you will get on your square depending on whether you chose to knit the Make one version or the Increase version. The make one version (pictured left) of the square will give you a defined line at the edge of the squares where making the stitches, as it does on the decreasing section of the square. If making the increase version (pictured right) there will not be a defined line at the edge of this side of the square but only on the decrease side.We used the Increase version on the projects photographed.
