“A small town is a place where there’s no place to gowhere you shouldn’t.” — Burt Bacharach
I’VE LIVED in some big cities and some pretty smalltowns. I lived in Buffalo, N.Y., when it was the 15th largestcity in the country. I lived in Detroit when it was the 4th or5th largest city. And I’ve lived in the sprawl and haze of L.A.
My preference is for small towns, simply because life issimpler, and because kind hearts and gentle people outnum-ber all those type-A city slickers.
One town I lived in was so small the multiplex theater hadone screen, two television sets and an Etch-A-Sketch.Another was so small I thought its name was “ResumeSpeed.”
Novi, Mich., was one of the small towns. It is so namedbecause it was the sixth stop on the train line between Detroitand Lansing: Number Six = No. VI = Novi.
And then there’s Northville, Mich., which had a restaurantcalled the Hole in the Wall, because when some constructionpeople knocked down a wall in a building, they discovered ahidden room. Someone turned the whole thing into a restau-rant.
The main street in Hartland, on the other hand, had a bank, the Florence B. Dearing Museum, a music hall and the “rip-off.” The rip-off is what we called the small grocery store thatcharged about 50 percent more for convenience items such asmilk and bread, since the nearest supermarket was 10 milesaway. The museum was no bigger than a one-room school-house. The collection included things like electrified oillamps, a World War II service flag, spinning wheels, a one-treadle sewing machine, and a sergeant. Not a John SingerSargent painting, but a dummy of a World War I soldier in asergeant’s uniform.
When I traveled to Indiana, I sometimes visited towns sosmall the Saturday night domino game was the highlight ofthe week. You never heard such clacking as when those tileswere moved at lightning speed. A client of mine, an ortho-dontist in Mishawaka, was responsible for plowing a section
Many of us know the storied history of the interesting andartistic people who dominated the town soon after it was cre-ated. Many similar types are here today — with differentnames, perhaps, but with a genealogy that is one degreeremoved from the founders. I envy the people who grew uphere and remember what the corner of Seventh and SanCarlos looked like 40 years ago, or how many ice cream par-lors there were, or when there was a movie theater whereCarmel Plaza is now.
It is my good fortune to meet with some of those folks forcoffee talk once a week. The group includes poets, cartoon-ists, filmmakers, photographers and authors whose combinedage is greater than the national debt. A couple of them werein grade school together 70 years ago. The stories they tell, the memories they have, and the friendships they’ve madeidentify them as the remarkable people who make Carmelvery different from Hartland, Novi and Northville.
I’ve lived in Buffalo, Detroit and L.A., the trifecta of leastdesirable places to live. So I deserve to be here. I really do.
Jerry Gervase can be contacted [email protected].
THE MANY VIRTUES OF SMALL TOWNS — ESPECIALLY THIS ONEof State Route 933 in winter. I want to say the road wascrooked when he started and he straightened it out, but whowould believe me?
Which brings me to Carmel. It’s a small place, but veryunlike any other small place I’ve been in. Its population isabout 3,900, which balloons to more than 6,000 when there’sa city council meeting about beach fires. Yet, the number of
restaurants (too many to count), galleries (more than 80),jewelry stores (about 30) and chi-chi shops make it very dif-ferent from Northville. There’s no Hole-in-the-Wall restau-rant on Ocean Avenue. Some may argue that there are plentyof “rip-offs,” but that’s probably because they had to forkover for a winter jacket while visiting in June.
Any small town can have good restaurants and nice stores.I don’t think there are many, though, that have trees growingin the middle of the sidewalk, or where you need a flashlightwhen leaving a theater at night because there are no street-lights. There aren’t many small towns that have more than 40courtyards, lanes and alleyways. Visit any of them and walksmack into serendipity. And where else do residents givedirections to their homes that sound like latitude and longi-tude readings?
More than a dozen coffee shops provide the prime ingre-dient that stirs people awake in these parts. It’s the coffeetalk, the rich-flavored breath of dark-roasted dialogues asCarmelites ease into their work masks, or game faces, or justsit and chat about the importance of doing nothing. Finally, itall comes down to the people. There are friendly and interest-ing people living all over this great country. Yet, this tiny vil-lage has captured far more than its fair share.
