Fundraising at OLLIOLLI at U of M is in its sixth year of raising funds to help assure long-term sustainability. The most successful OLLIs are those whose members invest in their OLLI organization through volunteering and their financial contributions. We are so grateful to our volunteers and to our members whose financial commitment provides for the continued success of our programs. John Dorcey, OLLI Board Treasurer, has shared that member contributions have helped fund an increased staff, an upgraded computer system, and higher quality programs and publications.
OLLI at U of M is also planning more member-to-member activities before and after OLLI programs, reaching out to newer members, and responding to the anticipated growth of our membership. Future contributions to OLLI’s Sustainability Fund will support OLLI operating expenses, technology upgrades, and enhanced program offerings while minimizing fee increases. We will hold our OLLI Donor Thank You event in October of 2016- stay tuned for details!
Consider a Legacy Gift for OLLIOLLI is grateful to members who consider a legacy gift as a meaningful way to support OLLI into the future. The two most common legacy gifts are bequests and charitable remainder trusts. Please feel free to contact OLLI Finance Director Lisa Barton at [email protected] or 734-761-2540 with questions or for further information.

Wilfred Macdonald Kincaid, born Friday, September 13, 1918, died Saturday, Dec 12, 2015. He succumbed after a brief illness at
age 97 in the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI. Born in Cornhill, Scotland, the only child of William Abraham Kincaid and Mary Christina Macdonald Kincaid, who married after both served in France during WWI. After his infancy in Scotland, his parents settled in Berkeley, CA. Upon his high school graduation, he graduated from the University of California-Berkeley in 1940 with a degree in mathematics. He completed his Ph.D. in applied mathematics at Brown University in Providence, RI. Wilfred’s career began in Hampton, VA, at a government agency which grew into the Nation-al Aeronautics Space Administra-tion (NASA). After WWII service as a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, US Army, he relocated to Ann Arbor in 1946 to teach mathematics as a professor at the University of Michigan, a position he held until he retired in 1984. In the fall of 1950, Wilfred joined the graduate outing club at UM, where he met a schoolteacher working on her doctorate in education named Fay Allen. Wilfred and Fay Allen were married on November 27, 1952 at
in memoriamthe First United Methodist Church, Ann Arbor. The couple joined the First United Methodist Church in 1955 and remained members throughout their lives. Wilfred and Fay had three sons, William Allen Kincaid, of Ann Arbor; Walter James Kincaid, of San Jose, CA (predeceased); and David Andrew Kincaid, of Ypsilanti. Fay Allen, Wilfred’s wife, preceded him in death in 2004. Other survivors include Deborah Gibson, formerly of Cedar Rapids, IA, affianced to William Allen Kincaid. Wilfred pursued many interests in his long post-academic career. Within his church, he was a devoted founder and participant in their Memorial Garden. He contributed to his church’s Current Events discussions and kept his Ann Arbor District Library card busy by checking out books until a few weeks prior to his death. Wilfred was an active member of OLLI-UM, both attending and teaching classes and lectures. In Fall 2015, he participated in Gerry Lapidus’ book group on Confronting World Order and Amy Seeto’s study group on Chinese History and Culture. Other interests included the study of anomalies as an ardent advocate of the Society for Scientific Exploration. He also maintained a membership in the American Academy of Mathematics. His family, his OLLI friends, and many others will miss him dearly.

2016 Big Hearts for Seniors Event
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Michigan is pleased to partner with four other community-based University of Michigan Health System programs for seniors to present the 2016 Big Hearts for Seniors Event on May 26. All proceeds from Big Hearts for Seniors go directly to support OLLI, Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels, the Housing Bureau for Seniors, Silver Club Memory Programs, and the Turner Senior Wellness Program. Letter to Anita is a riveting portrait of the effects of anti-gay discrimination on families and how one woman, Dr. Ronni Sanlo, found her voice and her capacity for forgiveness. Directed by Andrea Meyerson and narrated by Meredith Baxter, the documentary provides historic context for the discrimination that today’s LGBT older adults have faced in their lifetimes and, in many cases, continue to face. Letter to Anita portrays a story of love and loss, family and solitude, acting and activism. After the film, Sanlo and well-
known community leader Jim Toy, will join us for remarks. Both Sanlo and Toy have strong connections to the University of
Michigan and to the Spectrum Center, UM’s LGBT resource and support center. The author of The Purple Golf Cart: Misadventures of a Lesbian Grandma (2013), Sanlo is a well-known keynote speaker and workshop presenter who draws upon her experiences as a professor, LGBT center director, and dean of students as well as her personal life experiences. Toy helped establish the first university center devoted to sexual orientation concerns, now known as UM’s Spectrum Center. Toy is a founding member of the PFLAG/Ann Arbor, HARC, GLSEN/Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti Area, WRAP, Transgender Advocacy Project, Washtenaw Rainbow Neighbors, Washtenaw Faith Action Network, and the Out Loud Chorus, among other organizations. Ryan Cowmeadow of the Area Agency on Aging will be the master of ceremonies for this event. Cowmeadow is a dynamic speaker

This fall, with the help of Ian Robinson, a lecturer in UM’s Social Theory and Practice program in the Residential College and graduate students in the School of Social Work, OLLI-UM will pioneer its very first service learning class! Developing a service learning class is an important part of OLLI’s strategic plan. Service learning integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Service-learning courses differ from traditional classes or study groups in that:• service-learning course objectives are linked to real community needs and are designed in cooperation with community partners and service recipients. • in service-learning, community service informs academic dialogue and comprehension. UM has engaged students, faculty, and community members in learning together through community service and civic participation for the past 40 years. Our former program director Abbie Lawrence-Jacobson first heard of OLLIs participating in service learning classes while attending the Osher National Resource Center Conference. Recognizing that many OLLI
members have long-standing commitments to local organizations that combat homelessness and hunger, she asked Study Group Chair Stu Simon and the OLLI Study Group Committee if they were interested in developing such a class. Study Group committee member Kathleen Singer agreed to work on creating a service learning class that would capitalize on the strengths and contributions of older adults while also serving a genuine need in the community. Still in development, the class will build on OLLI’s relationship with the UM’s School of Social Work and the expertise of the panelists who spoke at the After Five event, Homelessness in Washtenaw County, to focus on issues of homelessness in our community. The six-week long service learning course will include one and a half hours of discussion per week along with three to four hours of volunteering.
OLLI-UM to Embark on Service Learning this Fall!

According to OLLI Marketing and Publications Chair Wendy Mead, there are two kinds of people in the greater Ann Arbor area: those who love OLLI and those who have never heard about OLLI. Wendy and the Marketing and Publications Committee intend to spread the word about OLLI and to promote a spirit of community and friendship with a participative marketing campaign called “Show Your ‘O.’” OLLI members will receive “O” buttons and be encouraged to wear their buttons around town to provide more visibility for OLLI. The OLLI Marketing Committee, Social Interaction Committee, and Board of Directors are developing a list of fun, on-going community

The OLLI Kick-Off Planning Committee, led by Vice President Bill Roberts, is already hard at work planning our fall 2016 Kick Off, which will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at the Kensington Court Hotel, by the Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor. The keynote lecture for this year’s Kick Off will be “Can One Person Really Change the World?,” given by photojournalist and author Tom Clynes. Clynes travels the world covering the adventurous side of science, the environment, education, and extraordinary personalities for magazines such as National Geographic and Popular Science, where he is a contributing editor. His work has also appeared in Men’s Journal, Nature, The New York Times Magazine, The Sunday Times Magazine, and many other publications. Clynes is the author of Wild Planet! and most recently,
The Boy Who Played with Fusion: Extreme Science, Extreme Parenting, and How to Make a Star, which is shortlisted for the 2015 PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. In his talk, Clynes will consid-
er how our OLLI-UM members have changed the world. He has asked that OLLI gather stories of things our members have done and are doing that
make a difference in our community and the world. Please submit your story to [email protected]. Six lucky Kick Off attendees will receive a copy of The Boy Who Played with Fusion. After the keynote address, please join OLLI staff and volunteers for light refreshments, to learn more about volunteer opportunities, and to register for Fall 2016 lectures, classes, events, and day trips.

One of the wonderful aspects of OLLI is that there are many opportunities to take a leader-ship role, whether by serving on a committee or leading a study group. As our membership continues to grow, the OLLI Study Group Committee seeks diverse member volunteers who are interested in sharing their knowledge and interests with other members. OLLI study groups don’t have tests, homework, or grades; they simply focus on the joy of learning. A study group can be as short or as long as you want it to be—we’ve had instructors lead a single session and we’ve had instructors who’ve chosen to meet throughout the year! Some of our instructors have a background in education or teaching; others just enjoy facilitating learning and sharing enthusiasm for hobbies and interests. OLLI also welcomes collaborations with other university and community organizations. OLLI members have expressed an interest in having more foreign language classes, poetry, art history/art appreciation,
creative writing and memoirs, theater and acting, music history/theory/appreciation, acting, comparative religion, Buddhism, genealogy, natural wonders, geography, ecosystems, constitutional law, politics, computer literacy, and fiction and non-fiction book discussions. We have study group leaders who successfully use TED talks and Great Courses and Teaching Company DVDs to facilitate lively and informed conversation on difficult topics. Please consider submitting a course proposal for one of these topics or for any topic that interests you—be as creative as you want! If you’d like to talk about course design or facilitating learning with older adults before submitting a course proposal, the OLLI Program Director, Jean Leverich, and the OLLI Study Group Committee are always available to help. Additionally, Stu Simon, the Study Group Committee Chair, leads a free OLLI Group Facilitation class for potential instructors. The next Group Facilitation course is of-fered on Friday, August 12, 2016 at the Saline Senior Center. In addition to the pleasure of facilitating learning, OLLI study group leaders receive two complimentary study group registrations or one free lecture series within one year of service.
Be an OLLI Study Group Leader this Fall!
