WISCONSIN YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAS 1966 FALL 2014 NEWSLETTER Upcoming Events I don’t like WYSO. I LOVE WYSO! Since 1981, I have been smitten. Admittedly, at least the first couple years, I tried to stay somewhat aloof. WYSO just looked good on my resume. Funny thing—it still does. I blame the students. It’s their fault! Their quirky personalities, stubborn and persistent progress, and ebullient ownership of the stage all have played a roll. Let’s face it. This gig is a music educator’s dream! These students crave learning, they challenge us to challenge them, and they give their best. Every year—including this season— they uphold the “Three R’s.” Respect, Responsibility, and Resourcefulness aren’t corny, old-fashioned words, they are truths that ground us, remind us, and motivate us. I don’t teach percussion. I don’t teach music. I teach, as do my esteemed colleagues, LIFE SKILLS. All of this is made so simple because of the parents of these glorious, funny kids! Combine their love of their children with an incredible administrative staff, an artistic staff at the top of their game, plus a smart, dedicated board—WYSO simply exudes excellence. Opportunity and Excellence

I am pleased to report that the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras delivered a strong artistic and financial performance in FY14.

By the end of the year, our 359 members made amazing musical progress. Their artistry in concert was enjoyed by thousands of appreciative audience members. Their dedication to music making was evident at every Saturday morning rehearsal and in each concert and recital throughout the year. Our partnership with Madison Music Makers continues to expand and flourish. This past year, 25 WYSO members provided musical leadership and inspiration to less fortunate aspiring musicians. Parent involvement is integral to the success of the WYSO programs. We continued to see an exemplary outpouring of support and involvement from parents in all four core ensembles: Sinfonietta, Concert, Philharmonia and Youth. Our Youth Orchestra tour to Argentina over the summer of 2014 was an unprecedented artistic and cultural success.

Our dedicated WYSO Board of Directors, parents and staff worked very hard to meet fundraising goals for the Annual Appeal, Musical Notes Family Fundraising and the WYSO signature benefit event Art of Note. We are also very grateful to our in-kind donors, especially the UW Madison School of Music. The rehearsal, performance and administrative space provided allow us to offer ever increasing musical opportunities to our region’s most talented young musicians.

The WYSO endowment made a healthy contribution to WYSO in fiscal year 2014. We received an incredibly generous endowment gift from Diane Endres Ballweg to establish the Diane Endres Ballweg Winterfest Concerts Fund. This gift will support our Winterfest Concerts in perpetuity.

We are in full planning mode for our 50th anniversary in 2015-2016. Our founder, Dr. Marvin Rabin passed away in December. He would be very proud of the special concerts, commissions, alumni reunions and social events that will bring together WYSO supporters from around the globe.

Challenges remain as we continuously work to find ways to increase revenues to support our need for program development, additional administrative space and scholarships. Please be assured that we will continue to make prudent financial decisions so that we continue to be regarded as one of the top youth orchestra programs in the country.

BRAVO and THANK YOU! Your support is more important than ever!

A Unique Community Celebrates 50 YearsYou may not have been around when WYSO was founded in the 1965-66 school year. But you’re now a member of the WYSO community that spans several generations and is preparing to celebrate WYSO’s 50th Anniversary during the 2015-16 academic year.

The WYSO community has many facets: student musicians, parents, WYSO staff, board members, volunteers, donors, conductors, section coaches, school music teachers, studio teachers, and audiences throughout Wisconsin as well as other states and several foreign countries. In one way or another, WYSO continues to make a difference in the lives of thousands of people.

Bringing members of the WYSO community together to celebrate a remarkable legacy is the intent of the 50th Anniversary Celebration that will begin with a reception at the Dane County Airport on September 25, 2015 and continue into 2016 with special events. The planning already includes...

• A display of WYSO history, sights and sounds at Dane County Airport that will be viewed by thousands of travelers over several weeks. • New commissioned works for each WYSO orchestra plus the Percussion Ensemble to be premiered at concerts in March, 2016. • The return of a special, interactive WYSO concert for young children that first occurred in 1967. • Master Classes and workshops for current student musicians presented by WYSO alums, special guest artists, and composers throughout 2015-16. • WYSO Alumni reunion events in March, 2016, including alumni ensembles, performance and social events. • Special 50th Anniversary performances by all WYSO orchestras and ensembles in March, 2016, including a Wisconsin Public Television recording and broadcast. • Commemorative materials including a 50th Anniversary book, poster, pin and videos.

A Steering Committee of volunteers is leading the planning for these events. Announcements about these and other plans will begin distribution early in 2015. If you have questions or would like to help with planning, you may contact either of the Steering Committee Co-chairs: Mike George ([email protected]) or Dick Wolf ([email protected]).

You will always be a member of the WYSO community. The WYSO 50th Anniversary will focus on bringing the community together and inviting others to enjoy the celebration.

Stan and Shirley Inhorn Honored with AwardStan and Shirley Inhorn were awarded the first John DeMain Award from the Madison Symphony Orchestra League on September 12. The Inhorns, who are life trustees and long supporters of WYSO, were honored with the award because of their ardent support of the MSO and other Madison-based music organizations such as WYSO.

The Inhorns first joined the WYSO organization as parent representatives when their children began playing in the WYSO orchestras in 1971. After their three children graduated from the WYSO program, Stan and Shirley joined the WYSO Board of Directors, where they have served as passionate and committed fundraisers, committee members, and advocates for music education in the Madison area.

Throughout their four decades with WYSO, the Inhorns have organized and supported numerous performances, educational activities, receptions, and fundraising events. No task was ever too daunting, nor too mundane for them to undertake if it would benefit WYSO.

Join us for An Evening with The Kissers On November 21st, 2014 the WYSO Parent Leaders will be holding their second annual fundraiser featuring Madison’s premiere Irish band, the Kissers. From 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm at the Brocach you are invited to come and attend what is sure to be a night to remember. Come and enjoy some phenomenal music, prizes, a cash bar, and an assortment of appetizers. There are a limited number of tickets available so get yours soon!

• $20 per ticket in advance, $25 per ticket at the door• Each ticket enters you into a door prize raffle. • Additional raffle tickets may be purchased for $2 or 3 for $5. • Brochach Irish Pub: 7 W. Main St., Madison, WI 53703 • All ticket and raffle sales will benefit WYSO

Youth Orchestra Tour To Argentina A Resounding Success! Our first international tour to South America began in Buenos Aires with a shared concert with the National Youth Orchestra of Argentina at the Facultad de Derocho. From there we travelled to Mar del Plata. It was an absolutely amazing night at the Teatro Colon. The buses pulled up to the theatre and we saw hundreds of people standing in line to hear WYSO play their Mar del Plata debut concert. It was standing room only by concert time. The encore was repeated twice as the crowd of nearly 900 clapped to the beat and demanded more. We returned to Buenos Aires and played our fourth concert at the Usina del Arte.

A mid-week highlight of the tour was a visit to Escuela 23 Distrito 19. The elementary age students come from the most desperate of circumstances. The school was on winter break but this was a once in a lifetime opportunity and many made a special visit to the school to hear the concert. Mrs. Eckel spoke Spanish to the audience asking if any had ever heard a live orchestra. Most had not. This concert was a very moving experience for all of us. We left feeling like we had really made a difference in the lives of these very special young people and their families.

Our final concert was played in Rosario at the famous Teatro El Circulo. We were part of a subscription series that included orchestras, choirs and opera productions from around the world. Nearly 1500 people attended the concert. It was an incredible end to our South American debut tour.

The entire WYSO organization and parents of these outstanding Youth Orchestra members can be so proud of the transformative impact that we made on thousands of lives by sharing our music. They were stellar ambassadors, fine representatives of their families, WYSO, Wisconsin, and the USA. It was an unforgettable tour that will never be forgotten.
