Yorktown is a fortunate community with over 100 local Nonprofit Organizations supporting various causes and worthwhile issues. YOUnited (Yorktown Organizations United) was initially formed in response to the community organizations’ desire to share mission statements, programs and events. Quickly, the organizations identified YOUnited as a resource to share their strengths and weaknesses to support each other, as well as identify needs that may be better addressed as a community of organizations. Yorktown residents are the true beneficiaries when we all work together!YOUnited coordinated the past three annual Yorktown Community Day Events allowing community members to interact with various organizations at the same event. The upcoming 29th Yorktown Community Day will host a Volunteer Fair this Fall to provide valuable opportunities for Yorktown families, teens and senior citizens to become more involved with local organizations.YOUnited is thrilled to be participating with the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce to highlight a Celebration of Yorktown NonProfit Organizations during the Chamber’s 10th Annual Yorktown Festival and Street Fair held on October 7, 2018. The YCC Celebration of NonProfits will also include YOUnited’s Three Cheers for Volunteers announcing the Volunteer of the Year for each organization.Throughout the year, YOUnited members step away from their own organizations to meet at the John C. Hart Library and discuss possible workshops or events that could support Yorktown Organizations to share resources and better serve the community. As a 501(c)(3) organization, YOUnited’s immediate plans include website development, social media outreach and a nonprofit workshop series for 2019. [email protected]

Taconic Carting and Hauling Inc. is a local woman owned carting com-pany. We offer 10, 12 and 16 yard containers. The uniqueness of our company, besides being women owned, is that we unlike other con-tainer services can put our containers just about anywhere. If you live in a condo complex that does not allow containers we can put our containers in your garage. If you want to put our container on your lawn we can do that too with little to no damage to your lawn. On your driveway we take the time and care to put planks down so there is no damage to your driveway. Low overhead wires? No problem. Narrow driveway? No problem. We are fully licensed and insured and also offer free estimates. We are a complete container service where you load or we load for you. If you don’t have quite enough garbage for a container, we offer a pick up with a pick-up truck. Please feel free to call with any questions or concerns and we will do our best to address them and get you set up with a container or free estimate. We look forward to serving you. 845-454-5865.

Summer is here and we have begun the 2018 Festival & Street Fair sales. Once again his year we are making changes as we prepare to make this event even greater than it has been. This year we are partnering with Support Connection’s Annual Support-A-Walk event at FDR State Park, a three-mile walkathon, then we will head over to the Yorktown Festival & Street for lunch, live entertainment, new 2018-2019 cars, classic cars, kids activities, our successful cupcake eating contest and over 200 vendors! The Yorktown Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Town of Yorktown is excited to bring the 10th Annual Festival and Street Fair to you. It’s been 10 years and do we have a celebration planned for you! So make sure to save the date! Buy a flag with your company’s name to fly over Yorktown or reserve a vendor spot.

Our June 18 Breakfast networking meeting at NY Presbyterian HVH was very well attended. We had an opportunity to meet President, Stacey Petrower and her senior leadership team who informed us about the changes and advancements taking place at our community hospital.

Next up is the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Awards Dinner at Little Sorrento on July 16, 2018. Sponsored by Saidel and Saidel, P.C., Doug Petri, ASAP Mortgage Corp. and Little Sorrento Restaurant. Nine scholarships for $1,000 and one scholarship, the Constance C. Petri Award for $2,500 will be presented to local high school seniors who will be tomorrow’s members and investing in their future today will benefit us tomorrow. All who donate will be guests at this dinner.

On September 17, 2018 we will honor five members that have demonstrated exceptional volunteerism within Yorktown Chamber of Commerce at Little Sorrento Restaurant. They are: Patricia Hallinan, John C. Hart Library, Dave Napolitano, Jefferson Valley Mall, Thomas Newman, T3 Logo Wear, Thomas Pomposello, CCM of Westchester and John Recchia,

DAS Auto Parts Center. Tickets are $40pp and seating is limited so be sure to make your reservations asap. We congratulate the winners!

A special thank you to our membership’s support of the Chamber, without whom none of our programs would be possible. It is your Chamber. Make it work for you. Enroll new members, attend networking meetings and sponsor our events.

As always my door is open to all members with any concerns or suggestions. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

a Lakeland H.S. graduate. We want to share with you a young person’s perception of what the Chamber stands for and means to her.

Yorktown Chamber of Commerce Ishika Patel , Lakeland High School, Grade 12

7:59 a.m. I walk towards the entrance of Turco's hoping to clock in before 8 a.m. As I enter the automatic sliding doors, a green sticker in the bottom left comer catches my eye. YCC Member, it reads. If someone asked me a year ago, I would have had no idea what it meant. But ask me today, and I can write an essay about the importance of Yorktown's Chamber of Commerce.

A chamber of commerce is a staple, if not, the very essence of a town. Not only does a chamber of commerce facilitate growth within the town, it also maintains its image by promoting values, culture, and tradition. The Yorktown Chamber of Commerce sponsors local businesses, recognizes the achievements of members of the community, and keeps people informed about the inner workings of the town. As a student going into business, I understand how important it is to promote health, commerce, and community in a town. But why is the general public----the everyday citizen---- uninformed about the importance of a Chamber of Commerce?

For one, some people might not be aware the existence of a Chamber of Commerce or its information sessions, meetings, membership etc. Other people don't really think of themselves as belonging to a town, a community of its own. Today, I wouldn't be surprised if people didn't talk to their neighbors! Not to be a cynic, but the harsh truth is that community spirit is dwindling. Now, due to the rise of individualism, competition, and modem crime, people are developing the mentality "every man for himself' and "stranger danger". Don't get me wrong, I'm for earning trust as much as the next person, but there's a difference between a normal level of caution/ hesitation and avoidance. People are distancing themselves from community involvement, hiding behind the fact that they're too busy or that it's not a priority. But what kind of future does this leave for the next generation? A future where representation doesn't matter? A future where every man is for himself because we don't trust each other?

That's where a chamber of commerce comes in. Working for the betterment of its town, a chamber of commerce is a business spokesperson, a sales manager, a liaison, advertiser, and a humanitarian all-in-one. Creating an environment where current businesses want to stay and others want to locate, maintaining a strong economy, and hosting community activities and fundraisers to show support for local organizations and global issues are central to the Chamber of Commerce's efforts. Business of the year awards, Dine and Donate, the Home Lifestyles and Family Show, street fairs, parades, annual auto shows----- YCC does it all. New businesses are constantly finding a place in the hamlets of Yorktown and with the help of the YCC, create jobs, more business opportunities, and make Yorktown look more appealing than it already is (how is that even possible?). Furthermore, the YCC does not only help commercial businesses, it helps preserve Yorktown traditions and implement diversity. Hilltop Hanover Farm, a family-run farm holds an annual Easter egg hunt where kids can celebrate Easter and people can learn about the farm while feeding the animals. Spring Fest is a celebration filled with art, international delicacies, auctions, etc. The range of events that the Chamber of Commerce can organize is one of the most appealing things about Yorktown.

I think the Chamber of Commerce is doing a great job at keeping Yorktown "the place to be". With the help of volunteers, the Board of Directors, and the Committee, Yorktown has become a great town and an even better place to grow up. As a resident of Yorktown, it is comforting to see how many people show their support for the Memorial Day parade. It is comforting;when the faces of children light up when they are awarded for their Arbor Day artwork. And every Sunday at Turco's, it comforts me when I see familiar Yorktown faces coincidentally running into their friends while they wait for a hot batch of bread.
