FOOD FOR THOUGHT From a Logic of War to a Logic of Peace

In his 2017 World Day of Peace message, Nonvio-lence: A Style of Politics for Peace, Pope Francis said: “In the most local and ordinary situa-tions and in the international order, may nonviolence become the hall-mark of our deci-sions, our relation-ships and our ac-

tions, and indeed of political life in all its forms.” During its recent Symposium on Nuclear Disarmament (November 10-11), the Vatican took some significant steps in that direction. In fact the Holy See’s position on nuclear weapons has evolved in ex-tremely important ways in the past few years. From a strictly conditional moral acceptance of nuclear deterrence, the Holy See moved toward the outright condemnation of nuclear weapons dur-ing the 2014 Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear War. It played a very important role at the UN in support of the recently negotiated Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. In many ways this process culminated during the papal audience with symposium participants when Pope Francis himself “firmly condemned” the “very possession” of nuclear weapons. Clear Rejection of Nuclear Weapons As the symposium continued after the Papal audience, San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy said, “The Church is in the midst of a fundamental reappraisal of how to balance the Christian obliga-tion to nonviolence with the need to resist evil in the world.” In fact, the Church’s clear rejection of nuclear

weapons may well be the cutting edge of a groundbreaking shift in Catholic dialogue with the world on issues of war and peace. Bishop McElroy contin-ued, “The power of nonviolence, once relegated to the category of romantic idealism, has emerged as a potent force for social transformation and the build-ing of lasting peace.” Last year in April, 85 people from around the world gathered in Rome for what has been called a “landmark” con-ference on nonviolence and just peace co-sponsored by the Vatican and Pax Christi International. Participants came together to imagine a new framework for Catholic teaching on war and peace that could contribute to the develop-ment and appreciation of nonviolent tools for conflict transformation. Central to our conversation were the voices of people promoting nonviolent strategies in the midst of horrific vio-lence – from Iraq, Sri Lanka, Colombia, South Sudan, the DR Congo, Mexico, Afghanistan, Palestine, El Salvador, the Philippines, Northern Ireland, Lebanon, Burundi, Guatemala, Uganda, South Africa and more. Their testimony about the urgent need to end war and the potential effectiveness of nonviolent ways to do so was extremely powerful. Nonviolent Strategies to Transform

Conflict In a formal statement delivered to Pope Francis, the April 2016 conference participants urged the Church to pro-mote nonviolence - using the tremen-dous institutional capacity of the Catho-lic Church to educate and advocate for significant investment in nonviolent strategies to transform conflict, protect threatened populations and promote just peace. It was in response to this Appeal to the Catholic Church from the

conference that Pope Francis wrote his 2017 World Day of Peace message on Nonviolence: A Style of Politics for Peace. In the past two years, the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative, a Pax Christi International project that grew out of the Rome conference, has engaged in a very serious conversation with the Vatican and with the local Church around the world, including in many war zones, about the breadth and potential of nonviolent strategies to further sustaining peace. An ambitious international round table process in-volving theologians, peace practition-ers, experts in nonviolent conflict,

activists and academics is well under-way. We believe this process will bear fruit in more fully developed Catholic teaching - possibly an encyclical - on the theology/spirituality of nonviolence and on nonviolent strategies toward just peace. Beatrice Fihn, executive director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize, captured the deter-mined atmosphere of the recent Vatican gathering. Humans, she said, “harnessed the power of science to build these weapons; we have har-nessed the power of faith the stop them.” Hibakusha Musako Wada reminded us why, sharing her mother’s descrip-tion of wounded survivors, their bodies blackened by the blast of Nagasaki’s atomic bomb, as they came over the hill near her home a few kilometers from ground zero and of the open field crematorium next door that over-whelmed and deadened their senses. “What is human dignity?” she asked. Jesus proclaimed the Reign of God as a new world of nonviolence where the dignity of every person would be honored and where justice and peace would flourish. In this holy season, let us dedicate ourselves to becoming a nonviolent people, a nonviolent Church, and a nonviolent world. Let us welcome the Prince of Peace. "Nothing is impos-sible if we turn to God in prayer. Eve-ryone,” Pope Francis said last year in Assisi, “can be an artisan of peace."

Last weekend, Utopia Franciscana pantomimed the gospel at the Family Mass and presented at the 12:30 Mass. It’s an original work of intermingling Advent scenes in the Bible with contemporary life.

La semana pasada, Utopía Franciscana hizo una pantomima del evangelio durante la Misa familiar y presentó una obra original de escenas entremezcladas del adviento en la biblia y en la vida contemporánea en la Misa de las 12:30PM.

Do you feel like you are rushing from one thing to another to prepare for Christmas? Why not give yourself the gift of peace and stillness to prepare your heart for this wondrous celebration? Join us in Advent for silent prayer and meditation Mondays 7:30-8:45 pm in the Meditation room. Each week we do some simple opening prayers, followed by a brief Advent reading and a 20 minute period of silent prayer/meditation, followed by sharing. Everyone is welcome. No meditation experience is needed (The meditation room is located on the 2nd floor near the Clare Center. Look at the facilities map on the webpage if you need help finding it.)

BIBLE STUDY - READING EXODUS - RETURNS JAN. 10! We had a great time with the stories of Genesis in the fall! Here

come the next stories: Moses, the burning bush, pharaoh, plagues, crossing the sea, wandering in the dessert, making the covenant on Mt. Sinai, the golden calf, AND MORE! We will begin on Wednesday Jan. 10. We have a morning session beginning at 9:30 in the Fr. Grace room and an

evening session at 7:30pm in the Francis room. We have the same program at both times (and you can switch back and forth if you need to.) We use the Little Rock bible study program. En su mensaje por el Día Mundial de la Paz en el 2017, La No Violen-cia: Un estilo de Políticas por Paz, el Papa Francisco dijo: “En las situaciones más locales y ordi-narias y en el orden internacional, la no violencia puede ser el sello de nuestras decisiones, nuestras relaciones y nues-

tras acciones, y de hecho, de la vida política en todas su formas”. Durante su reciente Simposio sobre Desarme Nuclear (10-11 de noviembre), el Vati-cano dio algunos pasos significativos en esa dirección. De hecho, la posición de la Santa Sede sobre las armas nucleares ha evo-lucionado de manera extremadamente importante en los últimos años. Desde una aceptación moral estrictamente condicional de la disuasión nuclear, la Santa Sede avanzó hacia la condena absoluta de las armas nucleares duran-te la Conferencia en Viena sobre el Im-pacto Humanitario de la Guerra Nuclear y jugó un papel importante en la ONU en apoyo del Tratado de la Prohibición de Armas Nucleares. En muchos senti-dos este proceso culminó durante la audiencia papal con los participantes del simposio cuando el Papa Francisco “firmemente condenó” la “posesión misma” de armas nucleares.

Estrategias no violentas para transformar el conflicto

Necesitamos niños de todas las eda-des. Es una oportunidad para jóvenes de la secundaria que necesiten horas de servicio. Necesitamos quien repre-sente a María, José, tres Reyes Ma-

gos, muchos pastores y ángeles y muchos más perso-najes en la escenificación de la Navidad. Por favor, venga a la iglesia el domingo 17 de di-ciembre a las 6:00pm y el viernes 22 de diciembre a las 6:00pm para que podamos organizar los roles, las vestimentas y el ensayo. Los niños que tengan trajes de ángel, pastor o rey mago pueden traerlo al ensayo, necesitamos vestidos blancos o túnicas para ángeles, túnicas y bufandas para los pastores y por supuesto para el Niño Jesús. Es importante que sus hijos partici-pen en este ensayo para que se familiaricen con los cantos y comprendan cómo se coordina el movimiento y la música. Gracias a todos los que participaron y ayudaron en la celebración de la Virgen de Guadalupe, el proyecto Ángel de Navidad para niños que tienen a algunos de sus papás encarcelados o pasando situaciones difíciles y en la Feria del Regalo Alternativo de Navidad. Hasta el momento hemos recaudado cerca de $12,000 para la Fundación Feiffe que ayuda a niños y mujeres en Haití con becas escolares, escuelas, campamentos de veranos y capacitación vocacional, además de planes para construir una biblioteca y una clínica en Haití. Si desea participar en la Feria del Regalo Alternativo, no es demasiado tarde: comuníquese con la oficina parroquial lo antes posible. Gracias.
