The country consumes 10 000 barrels per day of petroleum products which were previously imported from Nigeria.The government asked the Chinese company that operates in the Agadem field, to build a refinery with the capacity of producing 20 000 barrels per day. In 2012, the refined petroleum was sold for 0.82 EUR in Niger compared to 0.45 EUR in Nigeria where prices are subsidised. With a reserve of some 600 million barrels (at the current rate, reserves will last more than 80 years), the refinery could produce more if an 800 km pipeline was constructed to link up to the Chad-Cameroon pipeline (a feasibility study is underway). However, security threats in northern Nigeria (Boko Haram) risk undermining this project. D epuis 2011, le pays est un (petit) producteur de pétrole (20 000 barils/jour soit 100 fois moins que le Nigeria). Le pays consomme 10 000 barils par jour de produits pétroliers,

auparavant importés du Nigeria. Le gouvernement a demandé à la compagnie chinoise qui exploite le gisement d’Agadem, de construire une raffinerie d’une capacité de 20 000 barils par jour. Mais l’essence de la raffinerie est vendue à la pompe 0.82 euros en 2012 contre 0.45 euros au Nigeria où les prix sont subventionnés. Le gisement d’Agadem dont les réserves sont de l’ordre de 600 millions de barils (représentant au rythme actuel, plus de 80 ans d’exploitation) pourrait produire plus à condition de construire un oléoduc de 800 km (à l’étude) vers le Tchad puis le Cameroun. Des menaces sécuritaires venues du Nord Nigeria (Boko Haram) pèsent sur ce projet.
