Issue #9 9 December 2019 A little Christmas cheer at our school assembly this morning! From the principal’s desk: As we approach the end of the year things start getting very busy. We had the Year 10 Recognition Assembly today and follow up with Year 8 tomorrow, Year 9 on Thursday and Year 7 on Monday next week. These assemblies celebrate student success in a range of endeavours across the school. It was great to see so many parents at the Year 10 assembly today. It is unfortunate that the Year 8 camp was cancelled but with bushfires all around Mangrove Mountain there was no way we were going to send our students into such an area. This week sees the first CAPA Showcase to be held displaying the best of the school in visual arts, photography, pottery, music and performance. All parents and students are welcome on Thursday, 12 th December at 6pm in the Houliston Centre. Cont. P2 Cover: Christmas cheer at our assembly this morning! A little Christmas cheer at our school assembly this morning!

From the principal’s desk:

As we approach the end of the year things start getting very busy.

All parents and students are welcome on Thursday, 12th December at 6pm in the Houliston Centre.

Y11 Biology Excursion to Westmead Hospital As part of the new Biology syllabus changes, Sydney University has initiated a program called Kickstart at Westmead Hospital to introduce students to some lab techniques associated with the Genetics module that they cannot experience in schools. Dr Pearl, the coordinator, organised a great experience for our students under the expert tutelage of selected PhD students in the medical research field.

Issue #9 9 December 2019

The lab activities involved running a gel electrophoresis and diagnosing a family with sickle cell anaemia. The students enjoyed the preparation techniques that could only be done in this environment, the micropipettes showed how small volumes of DNA can be transferred. It felt like a genuine hospital research lab experience and the techniques and equipment that the students practiced with were the real deal.

Thanks to Sydney University for a great initiative

Involving high school students and introducing

them to potential future medical careers.

Y8 Stemulate Excursion to RESMED RESMED have created a great initiative in which they invited local schools to bring a select group of Yr 8 girls for a Stem experience. They have a strong women in Science & Engineering philosophy and wanted to give back to the community. The activities they had organised were fantastic and the staff that ran them had volunteered and organised them.

The day started with an overall orientation of what Resmed does and how they go about solving problems in their industry. The girls were broken into smaller groups to move through a variety of activities. They had to build circuits and then use their knowledge to solve a problem. A walk through the factory enabled us to see how the equipment is put together (the robots were fascinating) and finally the girls learnt how to create a moving shaped copper wire, with a battery and magnets that looked more like a ballet dancer in a music box.

A panel of staff answered a series of questions from the girls over lunch which showed them the benefits of both having a STEM career and working at RESMED. There is great diversity of knowledge, skills and background that comes together to make their great products.

The final challenge was to make a rocket which was tested outside near their beautiful lake. The girls produced some great ideas and surprised themselves with their constructions and ability.

The day ended in the atrium of the Innovation building. After a moving speech from one of the solution creators the girls were showered with messages from all the staff that surrounded us from above. It was a moving scene of how they feel about the next generation, and the investment they would like to make in the future of girls in STEM.

Thanks again to RESMED for a fantastic day and wonderful experience. These days are not easy to organise and it was wonderful to speak to a variety of volunteers from across the company.
