JULIUS KOROSCHAIRMAN

Dear Members,

During the AGM held in May last year, you bestowed

me the great responsibility to steer the leadership of

the Club. I esteem it a great privilege and honor to

serve from among many other equally qualified and

experienced members. Working together with the

Club President, Committees, Club members and

sta�, I shall spare no e�ort to ensure a consultative

and inclusive leadership.

The revamped website, Kamukunji, the newsletter

among other platforms shall remain key platforms for

interaction and exchange of views and information.

The club continues on the progressive trajectory and

transformation through the implementation of ap-

proved projects and execution of the 2020 strategy.

The swimming pool area, ICT and security and roof

projects shall be completed early 2018.

Members will in the first quarter be issued with new

member cards which shall be used for access to the

club, identification and management of member ac-

counts.

The completion of the ICT and security project will en-

hance the security and safety at the club. The Club’s

main gate shall be dedicated for members only, with

the hospital road gate for guests and visitors. We are

considering closure of the squash gate and dedicate to

sta� members only. The completion of the roof repairs

has now paved way for the refurbishment of guest

rooms. The 2020 strategy “Members first” is progress-

ing on well with the following pillars.

•Governance and Management Structure

•Member Services (Customer Excellence) and commu-

nication

• Financial Sustainability.

•Enhance sporting and wellness agenda.

Financial sustainability will be crucial going forward.

Membership revenue; entry fees, subscriptions and

levies play a central role in the running of the club

since over the years our operations have not been

able to cover the cost of running the club. We con-

tinue to focus on developing e�iciencies and controls

in our processes, systems and people thus a number

of initiatives around these areas are in progress. The

increase in the number of service outlets in the past

couple with the review in menu o�erings in member

events such as club night, whisky night, Christmas

carols etc. have helped improve usage trends and rev-

enue but notreached optimum levels. We shall shortly

have a conversation around the credit facilities cur-

rently enjoyed by members to review its adequacy

and the limits

applicable. i believe members will deliberate on the

matter with utmost sobriety and clarity of issues.

i wish all our members, and staff a happy and prosper-

ous new year.

“I have learnt that people will forget what you said,

never forget how you made them feel…….”

I for one would like to thank all of you for the hard

work you have put in throughout the season.

Sometimes it's a thankless task with the count-

less hours of behind the scenes. However, we all

come back for more as it is for the club we all love so

much.

You should all be proud for what you have accom-

plished this year. All have shown an amount of

progression in patronizing the club which I am amazed

at. That only comes from the hard

dedication of the members.

All in all, you have played a special role in making this

club what it is today. Nairobi Club is a

family club that welcomes everyone from all walks of

life, its diversity making it an interesting

and exciting place to be.

Looking forward to 2018, the Functions and Events

calendar is already filling up, with many

exciting o�erings for your enjoyment and edification.

A special mention must go to the Main Committee and

the subcommittees. These two have put

in so much e�ort behind the scenes. Thanks to them;

we as a club now have focus on a

sustainable strategic plan..

ROOM CAPACITYNairobi Club has several confrence rooms with di�erent

capacities that fits all functions/events needs within the

current market demands. The club o�ers competitive

This year’s Valentine theme was a�airs of the heart. Couples enjoyed a romantic 7 course dinner at the club as

well as watching romatic movie, a first in the club.

The warmth of love last Valentine’s Day was in the air as members spent quality time with their loved ones.

The couples came in dressed in their special for a love filled dinner date with their significant other. The ladies got

an exceptional red rose, a bar of chocolate and a sparkling glass of wine.

CLUB NightClub night is a monthly event that enables mem-

bers to bond and socialise over a drink while listen-

ing to their favorite music.

Come join us every third Friday of the month each

with di�erent themes reflecting the occasion as

we serve you with tantalizing chef’s creations with

your favorite drink. The Club features live bands

with di�erent genres of music.

The kamukunji is a forum where members meet

and interact with the club leadership on a quarter-

ly basis. This also serves as an opportunity to bring

forth issues that have impact on the Club.

last year we managed two kamukunjis. The first

kamukunji discussed the pool kitchen reception

and banda where designs were shared. The last

quarter kamukunji was majorly an update on ma-

jor events and projects progress.

The sample coments from the members were:-

•Mr. Fred Musindi-A/C No 02609 (recommended

that the club should use experts as they sought for

the way forward for the perimeter wall project who

will provide preliminary drawings with different

options).

•Ms.Ludmilla Shitakha-A/C No 04773 (applauded

the importance of the forum as a platform for shar-

ing feedback and further suggested the need for

the club to carry out value for money audit. she

further recommended the need to upgrade the

business center computers to meet modern stan-

dards.

Card room LaUNCh

In May 2017 the card room was upgraded into

a modern boardroom. This was launched by

the club outgoing chairman (Mr. David Ab-

woga) and Club president (Dr. Joseph Aluoch)

-this has gone to become one of the most sort

meeting venues in the club.

The new board room has all the modern con-

ferencing facilities, i.e digital screen, 24 hour

wifi access, air conditioner and other ameni-

ties.

AGM-chAirMAn’s cocktAilThe Club’s AGM took place on 27th May 2017 where

Members were updated on the progress of the affairs

of the Club. Election of new Members of the Main

Committee was held. Members were later invited

to the Chairman’s cocktail hosted by the outgoing

Chairman Mr. David Abwoga who officially handed

over the shield to the incoming Chairman (Mr. Julius

Koros). The shield contains the Club’s by-laws signi-

fying the official handover of the mantle of leader-

ship. The retiring committee members were appre-

ciated for their role and contribution to the Club.

The new club president (Mr muhoga ngera) was un-

veiled and following new members were elected to

join the main committee:-

The dinner is a club signature event usually held to

appreciate both the president’s and Chairman’s dedi-

cation and immense contributions they give during

their tenure. The following members retired during

the event:-

‘Riding on a Tiger’

During the launch Uncle Moody who has

been a member for over 50 years and an ac-

tive library member was conferred Life Hon-

WhiskyNightThe whisky night was hosted at the cricket pavillion

on 24th November. This event brought together all

members of the Club with key target being young

members of the club. The strategy and youth affairs

sub-committee plans to organise such events on

quarterly basis .

tree pLaNtiNgThe Club’s tree planting day was held on 17th

November. This was an initiative of the Main

commitee through the lottery sub-committee

to enhance the clubs environmental conser-

vation initiatives. over 200 trees were planted

by Members and the signature tree (Thika

The event commemorates the advent of

Christmas Season. The club started the same

about 4 years ago and has since become a sig-

nature event popular with family members in

attendance.

The club celebrates an elaborate christmas

luncheon every year on 25th December with

wide variety of dishes with chef’s Christmas

creations running across the African conti-

nent delicacies. 400 members attended the

event.

The ocassion was graced by the Club Chair-

man and key note speaker Lady Justice

Ang’awa who spoke about the spirit of Christ-

mas.

This year we had the highest members attend-

ing. A guest cake was shared among the mem-

bers.

NeW year’seve

The club celebrates New Years Eve Dinner ev-

ery 31st December. The epitome of the event

is always characterized by the children movie

shows , mid-night count-down amidst toss-

ing of champagne crowned by breath taking

fire-works lasting for over 15 minutes at our

spectacular open cricket pitch. 378 members

attended the event with their children. kay-

amba Fiesta live band entertained members

through out the night.

A¨er the election of the first ever woman cap-

tain, Ms. Yvonne Wangui Machira, the section

have revived itself and continue to grow. Our

signature event is the weekly mix-in every thur-

day from 5:30p.m. All members are welcome to

visit the squash section and give squash a try.

We have a coach and a hitter who are always at

hand to o�er all the assistance you may need.

This year the Club did two boot-camps which were

well attended (out-doors and in-doors)

The grand boot-camp sponsored by the Chairman of

the Gymkhana, Mr. David Aduda was held on Saturday

16th December 2017. This was followed by a social

evening with lots of mbuzi choma and drinks. Mem-

bers then danced the night away as they closed the

year 2017 in style. The Club encouraged all the mem-

bers of the various Gymkhana and sports section to at-

tend such event in future.

In partneship with Tennis Kenya several tournaments

were held in the club during the year. Members contin-

ue to enjoy social tennis every Wednesday as the Ten-

nis club night and monthly Spoons which have grown

in popularity given the ever rising attendance.

During the April holidays, we held our annual chil-

dren swimming gala which registered over 150 chil-

dren. As we endeavour to keep this calendar event

on-going, we appeal for sponsorship from partners to

enable us host a better event and enable more chil-

dren participate.

Capital Development Projects

The initial security installation of a razor wire was

completed and the Club now is installing CCTV Camer-

as, improving cabling infrastructure and implement-

ing access control to enhance security with an antici-

pated completion being early in the year.

The roof repair works is at the final stage and it’s ex-

pected to be completed soon.

The Swimming pool area common for family events is

currently under renovation expected to be complete

early 2018.

Preparations for the upgrade of the Club rooms is at

an advanced stage and is expected to commence im-

mediately a¨er completion of the roof repairs.

Another project to follow soon is the construction of a

perimeter wall around the Club. Design work is ongo-

ing which will be shared to members in due course.
