endangering issues therefore, any

discharge from the eye needs to be

considered carefully and discussed

with your vet. The most common

cause for a discharge from the eye is

conjunctivitis.

Conjunctivitis is the medical term

for inflammation of the conjunctiva

(the delicate membrane covering the

inside of the eyelids and part of the

eyeball). Conjunctivitis can be caused

by a number of different reasons

including foreign material in the eye

such as grass seeds shavings or dirt,

allergy, irritation from flies, trauma,

immune mediated reactions or

infection. Infection can be caused by

bacteria, viruses or parasites.

If your horse has a discharge

from the eye there are important

points to consider. Firstly, does the

eye in anyway seem uncomfortable

or painful? Signs of discomfort in

horses might include the eyelids being

partially or fully closed, watering of

the eye down the side of the horses

face, itching the eye, any change in

the colouring of the eye (such as the

clear cornea becoming milky looking),

blinking a lot and sensitivity to sunlight.

If your horse is showing signs of

discomfort or pain then veterinary

advice should be sort as a more

serious eye injury or condition could

be involved that requires immediate

veterinary attention.

If the eye does not appear

painful then you should then assess

the colour of the discharge – a clear

watery appearance would be less

concerning than a purulent discharge.

If the discharge is excessive, thick,

yellow, and accumulating quickly

again after being washed away then

veterinary advice should be sort. Other

points to note prior to calling your

vet is noting whether the condition

involves one or both eyes, how long it

has been present and if other horses

in contact have a similar discharge.

Prior to seeking veterinary advice

the best thing to clean your horses’

eye with is clean water, ideally using

cooled boiled water. Occasionally

adding a small amount of salt (1/4

teaspoon to a cup) might also be

appropriate. You should never use

previous prescribed eye ointments

or drops without specific veterinary

instruction as some products can

make certain conditions much worse if

used incorrectly.

If in any doubt always discuss

the situation with your vet as serious

eye injuries can result if correct and

appropriate management of eye

conditions is not instituted quickly. NM

O lympia, The London International Horse

Show 16-22 December is the World’s best

equestrian Christmas party! The Show hosts

FEI World CupTM competitions in Dressage, Show Jumping

and Driving attracting the top equestrian athletes to

London. Other competition highlights include the Alltech

Christmas Puissance, with its infamous red wall, The Equi-

helping create a lasting

bond with your horse. Whether your

horse is new to you or you have

owned him for many years, the

bond between rider and horse is all

important.

focussing on the bond between

horses and their owners and what

helps promote this bond.

Nikki says, “Essentially, any time

spent with your horse creates a

bond. Think of the hours kids spend

playing with their ponies, grooming

them, washing them, painting their

feet, feeding them carrots, hand

grazing them, patting, stroking and

cuddling them. In our time limited

world, as adults we may be guilty

of doing the minimum necessary

to keep our horses cared for but no

more.

the release of oxytocin, a powerful

bonding hormone. Using simple,

McTimoney Animal Manipulation and

two BSc (Hons) in Equine Science

how important it is to consider all

factors in the health and care of

animals, and how in doing so, this

reflects in the quality of life for the

human owner too. Nikki has taught

in a range of environment, including

at MSc level for the last twelve years,

animals all over the world experience

Gathers in Idaho.

A western adrenaline rush, at Colorado’s Zapata Working Ranch guests are often invited to gather

the 400 strong herd of domestic bison. Once hunted

conservation programs like those at Zapata have helped

to stem their demise and today over 500,000 can be

found in North America. The ranch also manages 2,500

head of wild bison, the opportunity to get close to them

are available; the bison give birth and the young calves

banding together in playful groups. Dramatic landscapes

offer no shortage of horseback adventures. Guests can

ride across the back of the Great Sand Dunes National Park

throughout the season and those travelling in July have

the option to participate in a four night pack trip to the

At The Colorado Cattle Company travellers will

have a shot at becoming a real cowboy, the ranch featured

Situated on thousands of acres of deeded prime ranch

land, the wranglers look after over 800 head of cattle

W ith its finely chiselled bone, concave

profile, arched neck and highly

carried tail, the Arabian Horse

dominates many forms of equestrian activity

throughout the world today. It originated on the

Arabian Peninsula and can be traced back in

its purest form some 4,500 years. They spread

throughout the world via war and trade and were

interbred for their speed, endurance and strong

bone. Most riding breeds these days can be traced

back to Arabian bloodlines.

We came upon this beautiful poem by James

L Manniso which we would like to share with our

readers. James lived in the Middle East for a time

and he came across wild Arab Horses on the

deserts and used to watch them come down from

the forests and mountains to drink and rode them

on the beaches. This poem reminds him of the

wild Arab Horses he spent his time with:

The morning sun painted a red desert sky,

Praises and prayers were chanted on high.

Whispering winds moved over the land,

Restlessly shifting the parched, white sand.

The sky grew dark, from crimson to gray,

Shadowy clouds mounted in swirling arrays.

Torrents of sand eclipsed the sun,

Earth and Sky became as one.

From this mystical play of Earth and Sky

Came a shrieking, thundering, mighty cry -

Like the shrieking call of a million birds,

Like the thundering hoofs of a mighty herd.

Swiftly this tempest of swirling sand

Raced the lightning across the land.

Then God reached out, seizing this whirlwind force,

And from its fury formed the Arabian horse.

The creature’s beauty was unsurpassed,

Its gait elegant, its speed lightning fast.

Intelligent, graceful, a regal force –

God’s masterpiece, the Arabian horse.

And Allah took a handful of southerly wind, blew his breath over it, and created the horse. He said to the magnificent creature, “I have made thee as no other. to Riding Horse

Championship reached a thrilling

conclusion in the International Arena

at Horse of the Year Show, with

the top spot going to Flaygray with

owner and rider, Faye Hesketh. The

runner-up was Claire Oliver and

former Nicky Henderson trained,

Chouxdamour.

Flaygray, by Terimon out of I’ll

Skin Them (IRE), ran 12 times during

his racing career and won twice over

hurdles and once in a National Hunt

Bumper, trained by ex-national hunt

jockey, Chris Grant.

Since arriving with Faye he

has shown that he has a future in

the showring, winning supreme

at the Area NPS shown as a hack,

was first in the RoR class at the

North of England show, qualifying

for Hickstead, won the SEIB HOYS

qualifier at Osbaldeston and the RoR

at Winsor

The reserve spot went to

Chouxdamour, owned by Willie

Reardon and ridden by Claire Oliver.


Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship

including Midnight Chase who was

placed in the Cheltenham Gold Cup

and Purple Moon who has earned

over a million pounds in prize

money.

The SEIB Racehorse To Riding

Horse Show Championship was

created by South Essex Insurance

Brokers. The classes are open to

both amateur and professional

producers and are judged as for

Riding Horses, with the best of type,

whether hack, riding horse or hunter,

deemed the winner. NM

Chouxdamour qualified

in the large main

arena at Burghley and

it was a very different

atmosphere to that at

HOYS. But the 11-year-

old chestnut gelding,

by Murmure (FR) out

of Choucouli (FR),

took it all in his stride.

His former trainer and

former National Hunt

Champion Trainer,

Nicky Henderson, was

at HOYS to witness his success in the

show ring.

Third place went to Clare Pool

from Westbury-on-Severn, with the

bay gelding, Buckingham Boys, called

“Lovely” at home. Claire has had the

12-year-old for four years and got

him straight out of racing. “Retraining

an ex-racehorse is different from any

other horse, it is hard work but it is

special”, enthused Clare.

The 12 finalists, who have all

been in training and raced in the

UK, came before the judges, Jean

Walsh and Adele Hanson. Several
