A townwide celebration to mark the dedication of the restored Bailey’s Hill Gazebo is scheduled for Saturday, September 24th, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., in Bailey’s Hill Park. The free celebration, sponsored by the Town of Nahant and the Nahant Woman’s Club, will include music, food, period costumes, and many exciting activities, including a children’s art exhibit and contest. Rain date is Sunday, September 25th. This dedication is actually a rededication. In 1976, the Nahant Woman’s Club secured a grant to construct the original Gazebo. The original Bailey’s Hill Gazebo was dedicated in 1976, the nation’s bicentennial year. 1976 also marked the first visit of the Tall Ships off the shores of Nahant. Over the years, the Gazebo has become a true Nahant landmark and has been used for band concerts, picnics, children’s activities, community events, wedding ceremonies, and as a gathering place for town people who enjoy the park. After almost 30 years, the gazebo is in poor condition and poses safety concerns. Three years ago, the Nahant Woman’s Club initiated numerous fundraising projects, including the 2003 kitchen tour, to assist in the rebuilding of the Gazebo. Funds raised total $8,000. A check for the final installment of $4,500 was presented to the Town of Nahant by Past President Calantha Sears, current President Marrit Hastings, and Trea- surer Polly Bradley. Town Administrator Mark Cullinan accepted the check, with thanks, on behalf of the Town. This gift was in addition to the $3,500 donated earlier. A $10,000 Community Preservation Grant was approved in the 2005 Town Meeting to pay for the renovation work. Architect John Falat created the improved design for the Gazebo, and work was begun in late July, by the firm selected by the Town, JP Construction. The cost of the renovations totals $18,000. The art exhibit and contest, for all Nahant children under 12, will be one of the highlights of the rededication. Its theme is: “Things I like to do best in Nahant.” Entries must be brought to Bailey’s Hill by 8:00 a.m., on the day of the event. The Nahant Woman’s Club will also be celebrating the 110th anniversary of its founding. The Nahant Woman’s Club presents a check for $4,500 to the Town of Nahant for reconstruction of the Bailey’s Hill Gazebo. Letter to the Editor:

Like many who viewed the Nahant HistoricalSociety’s exhibit of paintings, featuring our shoreline, Ipurchased the catalog. Besides the excellent photographsof the art work, I was especially pleased to read again theeloquent and moving introduction, “Nahant’s RhythmicFlavors” by Daniel deStefano; it appears in the book, as itdoes in the show, at the beginning.

This sets the tone for a walk through a century-and-a-half’s artistic expressions. The words match the mood sowell, you may do as Dan suggests, when you finish thebook, walk on the beach.

The cliche “If you liked the movie—you’ll love thebook,” comes to mind. If you enjoyed the exhibit, you’lllove the catalog. Thanks to everyone who assisted in thisspecial cultural happening.

One-Pitch A Huge Successby Carol Hanson

The 8th Annual softball tournament, sponsored by The Friends of Earl, held on July2nd, was a huge success. Many people turned out to celebrate the strength of Gary“Earl” Hanson and his wife, Cindi, and daughter, Mariah, in the face of their struggle tolive with the challenges of Earl’s ALS. The day was beautiful, smiles abounded andmoney was raised, to help them keep up with the daily expenses that aren’t covered bysocial security.

Raffles were donated and sponsor donations were made by many individuals andbusinesses in and around town. As one of the organizers of the event, I send out a warmthank-you to all of these great, giving people. Your kindnesses are much appreciated!

drink one before eachmeal and one before bed.

Find other ways toinclude water regularly. To prepare for activitiesand prevent dyhydration, the American DieteticAssociation (ADA)recommends at least 16ounces of fluids, 2 hoursbefore and again, 15-20minutes before exercis-ing. During exercise, youshould drink more waterevery 15-20 minutes.

Your body sweats tocool down. Even if youdon’t see the sweat drip-ping, don’t be fooled, itoften evaporates quicklyin the heat. As you sweatyou loose fluids andminerals, like salt andpotassium. To replacefluids, water is still bestand fastest. Drinks withtoo much sugar (glucose, sucrose, fructose, etc.,

more than 3%) are ab-sorbed much slower thanplain water, or dilutedjuices and drinks. So afterexerting yourself in exer-cise, sports, or just play, drink water first, thenhave a sports drink, orjuice, 15-20 minutes later.

You may occas-sionally need to replacesalt and pottassium lost insweating, especially ifyou’re exerting longerthan an hour. Sportsdrinks will help to replen-ish these, or you mayconsume foods high insodium. Our diets oftencontain enough sodium,so this is not usually amajor concern.

Carbohydrates areneeded to refuel yourmuscles, but unless youexercise intensely ormore than once a day, these are sufficientlymaintained by eating abalanced diet. Your bodywill replenish itself withyour next meal or snack.

Protein is an impor-tant building block, too. Most experts recommendeating carbohydrates andproteins in a 4:1 ratio, 4servings of carbohy-drates, such as veg-etables, fruits and wholegrains, to 1 of proteinsuch as meat, fish, poul-try and legumes.

A well balanced dietand sufficiently hydratedbody will perform well, even in the summer. Donot overexert in the sun,as your body needs tocool down by circulatingblood to the surface.Increased demand bymuscles can cause over-heating, dehydration, headache, nausea andheat exhaustion.

Be sure to hydrate.Remember caffeine andalcohol dehydrate youeven more. Drink plentyof water and enjoy thesummer fun in the sun.

Recent HOOMPA Sighting at the Great Wall of China submitted by Mary Jo Ludke

There was a recent HOOMPA sighting at The Great Wall of China at Matianyu, where Caitlin Ludke (above, left) was traveling with her Dad, Bill, and Mom, Mary Jo.

Caitlin Ludke Meets Chinese StudentShen Fang Jun

Photo at right: Caitlin Ludke (R) meets with SecondGrader Shen Fang Jun, in Ningbo, China.

Caitlin, along with her 4th Grade teachers and class-mates at the Johnson School, inspired the entire schoolcommunity to raise nearly $2,000 to support children livingin orphanages in China. The school, in conjunction with OurChinese Daughters Foundation’s Orphanage Support Project(www.OCDF.org), will enable Fang Jun to attend a local public school outside theorphanage for the next two years and will provide him with books, a school uniform, winter clothing, school supplies, personal care items, an eye exam, and music lessons.Fang Jun is studying English and will write back and forth to the Johnson School stu-dents. Although schooling is provided within the orphanage, integrating with the outsidecommunity will allow Fang Jun to have play dates, join clubs and sports, and developlifelong friendships and connections. These will all give him a chance at a better future.Additional funds have been directed to the medical supply needs of a foster home nearBeijing, which services 80 children in need of special surgeries.

Caitlin wishes to express her heartfelt thanks to the Johnson School Community fortheir generous and enthusiastic support.

Preparing Your Boat for Saleby Rob Scanlan, Master Marine Surveyor`

There is a strong financial incentive to prepare a boat for sale. Detailing a boat isthe single most important investment of time, energy and money a seller can make, because a clean and shiny boat sells faster and for a lot more money. I strongly recom-mended that a seller enlist professional assistance to do a quality job. Sellers that opt todo it themselves, should consider the following tips:

1. Wash and wax the exterior, polish any metal, refinish any woodwork, repair, orreplace, canvas and cushions.

2. Clean the interior thoroughly, steam-clean, or replace, carpets, clean upholsteryor re-upholster. Unwanted odors must be removed, especially from the head, so get someair fresheners and disinfectant. Any personal effects, or items that make a boat lookcluttered, should be removed.

3. After the initial cleanup, schedule regular wash downs, to keep a boat in topshape. Consider cleaning the exterior/interior every two weeks and the bottom should beclean of any marine growth and a new application of bottom paint.

In addition, a seller should consider having me conduct a marine survey, beforelaunching a marketing campaign. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of a boat willsave time, energy and money later. I can determine if a boat needs repairs and furnish alist of items that need to be fixed, for the boat to be in top condition. Buyers are lookingfor a boat that has been well-maintained, with receipts and maintenance log available; souncovering any potential structural or mechanical problems early, gives you the opportu-nity to have them corrected and command your selling price.

Making any necessary mechanical repairs, at the beginning of the sales process, willprevent costly delays during the negotiations and closing. Boat owners incur monthlyexpenses such as mortgage payments, insurance, slip and/or storage fees and mainte-nance. Also, non-use can be more costly than using a boat regularly, which increases thelikelihood of additional repairs. Consider the following tips:

1. A boat must be in top mechanical condition, before launching a serious market-ing campaign. Have the engine(s) and generator checked out by me and make all neces-sary repairs. Clean and paint the engine(s) and steam-clean the bilge.

2. All equipment, wiring systems and electronics must be in good working order.Repair, or replace, items that are not. Also, ensure that all safety items, such as naviga-tion lights, horns and bilge pumps, are in good working order and all USCG safety gearis current.

Remember, all offers are subject to a marine survey, sea trial and mechanicalsurvey. Buyers must be satisfied by a boat’s condition, performance and eye-appeal, tocomplete the purchase.

Please call, or email me, if additional information is needed about preparing a boatfor sale.

Rob Scanlan is a Master Marine Surveyor serving coastal New England, Cape Cod andthe Islands. He can be reached at 781-595-6225, or by email at [email protected] his web site at www.mastermarinesurveyor.com.

(Continued on next page.)

Useless Informationby Ray Barron

Is Bob Lobel of WBZ-TVScoring in Nahant?

Sports newsman, Bob Lobel of WBZ-TV is makingnews about his on-camera actions and his squiring aroundwith a single mother from Nahant. Lobel’s wife SuzanneMcCarthy is standing by her man. Lobel’s ex-wife SusanWornick of WCVB-TV thinks Lobel’s “goofball” act isdue to someone who is experiencing personal pain. Huh?So who is the Nahant woman Lobel is seeing?

Speaking of sports, I believe it was the brilliant MaryDill, of Cary Street, who said, “The only draw back inbeing a good sport is that you have to lose to prove it.”

As Mary’s illustrious husband Dan will tell you, awell-informed American knows the lineup of baseballteams and about half the words of the “Star SpangledBanner.”

Lowell Gray Is Selling Out!

The only home in Nahant valued in the millions isowned by Lowell Gray of Swallow Cave Road. His landand building is valued at $4,055,400! Well, his spacioushome is up for grabs for $9,500,000! Yes, that is$9,500,000 million! What you get for your money is a“prestigious villa” on 1.89 acres of paradise. The pricealso includes a deeded, uninhabited, one-acre island.

In brief, Lowell Gray, 45, the father of four daugh-ters, purchased the oceanfront property five years ago. Heis a Swampscott native and once the property is sold hewill return to live in Swampscott.

So who will be the next owner of Nahant’s highestassessed home? Tom Cruise? Oprah? Debra Winger?Jennifer Lopez? Giuseppe Barisano? Dan deStefano?Greg and Lissa Keene? Bob and Harriet Steeves? LeeFox? Larry and Paula Smith? Phil and Pamela Osterlin?Bob and Peggy Silva? Madonna? Michael Jackson?

Truth About Housework

The amount of housework that American women doevery week, fell from 30 hours to 17.5 hours between1965 and 1995, while the amount that men do, rose from4.9 hours to 10 hours a week. Married women estimatedthat their husbands did 33 percent of housework, whiletheir husbands put their share at 42 percent. On average, according to several studies, men did 39 percent.

The electrifying Ed Poulin, of Irving Way, claimssome husbands help most with the house-cleaning whenthey stay away from home.

Ed’s sweet wife, Gayle, a native of New Orleans, says, “Some women are good housekeepers; others try notto overwork their vacuum cleaners.”

The alluring Sheila Hambleton, Nahant’s AssistantTown Assessor, says, “Some husbands are reasonable;others want their wives to do the housework for twentyyears and still look like the girls they married.”

The captivating Brenda D’Orazio-Cook, of SeaviewAvenue, says, “The only job where the work is steady, butthe pay isn’t, is housework.”

Summer In NahantA collaboration of old photographs, letters and memories of those who

lived and resorted on this seaside penninsula before us.

Tudor Estate Had TwoAcre Garden

The following letter dated 1849 is quoted byJohnson, and is mostly cited again as follows, for it givesa good contemporary account of what Tudor was doing:

Among the many beautiful features of Nahant, oneof the most beautiful is the residence of Mr. Tudor. Wecalled to see his place on the occasion of a recent ride toour famed and favorite Nahant, and were politely re-ceived by our friend Mr. Wm. F. Johnson, to whom weexpress our thanks for this attention.

The cottage and garden of Mr. Tudor are well wortha visit, and certainly deserve a mention to the public.

The cottage is built of stone which was collected atNahant, of a coarse or dark granite which is quite abun-dant there; the roof is covered with hemlock bark, givingthe building an ancient appearance, which seems to be ataste the proprietor studies.

Mr. Tudor’s garden contains over two acres, and isinclosed (sic) by a very substantial fence, about seven-teen feet high, which not only protects it from intruders, but prevents in a great measure the effect of the violentwind. He has a large collection of very fine fruit trees, many of them beautifully trained on fences, giving thema very tasteful and ornamental appearance. One cherrytree, with its branches trained horizontally, covers aspace of over five hundred square feet; some of itsbranches are about twenty feet in length, extending eachside of the trunk perfectly straight. The pear trees lookexceedingly well, considering that it is an unfavorableseason for the pear crop in this vicinity, owing to the latefrost in the spring.

His plums are worthy of notice, all looking finely, and not-withstanding the depredations of the curculio, many of these trees are loaded with the finest plums.

There are many interesting experiments in shadingtrees from the sun in the hottest part of the day, whichhave proven quite successful. All his experiments aretried in the most thorough manner. Among the manyexperiemnts is one quite novel of capturing insects; hehas suspended in his trees between two and three hun-dred small bottles, partly filled with sweetened water, into which all flies, bugs and moths are enticed anddrowned.

Great quantities have been destroyed in this way.During two weeks of the dry weather in June there werecaptured about five hundred thousand bugs, and in thirty-six hours on the nineteenth and twentieth of June, onehundred and eight thousand were taken.

Text at right: Some Annals of Nahant. Fred A. Wilson. 1928. Pages 61-62.

Frederic Tudor’s first passion was trees, and the more the better. From thevery year his cottage was completed in 1825, he commenced what became alifelong campaign to plant trees on treeless Nahant. The fact that the first settlershad deforested the peninsula so that they could pasture their cattle cut no ice withFrederic. Similarly, the scoffers who claimed that the salt air would kill all vegeta-tion, including trees, only spurred Frederic on. What greater challenge did heneed? Tell him something couldn’t be done and he instantly set out to do it. Hewho had brought ice to the inhabitants of far Hindustan could surely bring leafyshade to Nahant.

Balm of Gilead trees were the first he planted, some 150 of them. They werequick growing and offered protection to slower-growing trees. Once started on hisproject, he went overboard, as was his manner. By 1832, he had 3,358 trees grow-ing in his nursery. He kept adding new varieties to the stock: black poplars, firs, elm, oak, hickory, sassafras and beech. Within two years he had some 4,000 treesin cultivation, a total which he estimated would reach ten miles in length, ifplanted in a single row.

Frederic TudorThe Ice King Cometh

The Ice EntrepreneurAnother figure who appears in Nahant history ...

is Frederic Tudor, who is probably the best known ofall old Nahanters, though only by name to most. Hewas aggressive and eccentric, so that he has become ahistoric character of the town, the sort of whom manyamusing and interesting stories can be told. His son,Frederic Tudor, writes of him as follows:

In the earliest years of the century a young manjust entering mercantile life, looking around him witha beginner’s enthusiasm for unthought-of and cheapcommodities to carry to new and dear markets, litupon the ice which in limitless fields clothed hisnative lakes in winter. Even at that time, well-to-dopeople housed a little ice for summer’s use, and tohim occurred the possibility of transporting this greatabsorbent of heat and producer of cold to tropicallatitudes, where its value would be the greatest.

The substance was easily obtained, and to cut itinto blocks convenient for handling cost very little. An uncertain but probably large part would be lost bymelting: would there be a residue after storage, trans-portation and handling which could be sold at such aprice that all expenses would be paid and a profit leftover?

The young man who considered this project wasFrederic Tudor, the third son of Colonel WilliamTudor, a Revolutionary officer and friend of GeneralWashington, and a lawyer of eminence. Born inBoston September 4, 1783, he was scarcely twenty-one years of age when he began to ponder the schemeof a trade in ice, and he had so well satisfied himselfof its feasibility that in 1805 a cargo of ice cut from apond on his father’s country place in Saugus wasactually loaded on board a schooner, and , in chargeof himself as owner and supercargo, was shipped tothe island of Martinique.

The project, of which this was but an attempt, abare opening of what he calculated would grow to bea great trade with the Indies, was laughed at by all hisneighbors as a crazy undertaking.

two women walkedin step in public placea garden getting set for frost

we spoke of children grownpromises not kept by friends or husbandsor both and days gone by

we smiled with brushed porcelainpolished back our colored hairfrom faces cold and pink with winter wind

we watched in silence puffs from lipsrising mists form willowed lakeand saw a figure coming lateto clean the thorny pile of twisted twigs

we stopped and watchedbare stumps stuck from the mudcovered by some forgotten leavesnext to the thorny pile

he looked at us a youthful glanceand pushed the capfrom handsome grimy facewiped hands on dirty uniform

swiftly as only blades can movea gift was rescued from the pilean armored glove extendedone last rose to us

a tiny yellow budtrimmed in a thin red linewith fragrance lasting in the bitter wind

lifting our souls from the damp cold groundaway from death a momenttoward a vision of enduring gallant love
