Foreword

The NAIP, Component - III is entirely dedicated to Sustainable Rural LivelihoodSecurity (SRLS) of small and marginal farmers in Disadvantaged Districts of the Country.The sponsored mega-project in NEH Region “Livelihood improvement and empowermentof rural poor through sustainable farming systems in North East India” is showcasing someof the significant innovations which have created large scale awareness in general andsustainable rural livelihood in identified areas in particular. Agricultural transformation throughthe enhancement in productivity, diversity and economic profitability for the farmers is verymuch in need to put the disadvantaged areas of the northeast India in the mainstream ofagriculturally prosperous region of the country. The consortium partners of SRLS in theNorth East India for the last few years are relentlessly putting their efforts to bring aboutpositive changes in the disadvantaged areas and have come out with successful technologicalinnovations. It is high time to document such innovations and success stories for up-scalingin other areas for livelihood improvement of small and marginal farmers. Such documentwould serve as a guide book for the planners and other stakeholders to design and implementlivelihood improvement programmes in other areas. Further, it would be a useful documentfor shaping and refining activities of the current project for the remaining extended period. The North Eastern Region (NER) of Indiaconstitutes the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam,Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkimand Tripura. The North East of India is a region ofmystic splendors and rich cultural heritage spreadsover an area of 262179 sq. kms. It is stretchedbetween 89.46° to 97.30° East longitude and 21.57°to 29.30° North latitude.

The entire North Eastern Region is at the lowlevel of economic development although it has atremendous potential to develop. Agriculture hasbeen the leading sector of the economy in theregion. It is playing a significant role in determiningvarying nature of agro-economic activities. Morethan 70 percent of the population in the region isinvolved in agricultural activities for earning theirlivelihood. The region is characterized by fragility,marginality and inaccessibility and the agriculturein the region is complex, diverse and risk prone.The farmers are small and marginal and about 80%of the population depends on agriculture for theirlivelihood. Rural population is around 82% andmore than 40% of the rural population in the regionlives in poverty. Shifting cultivation, acid soil, steepslopes, no or meager use of fertilizersand manure, low yielding varieties/breeds of crop/livestock are the majorconstrains in agriculture. Out of 4.0million hectares net sown area of theregion, roughly 1.3 million hectaressuffer from serious soil erosionproblem. The basic issues facingagriculture in the region are smallland holdings, low cropping intensity,low productivity, inadequate accessto appropriate technologies and otherexternal inputs, inadequate irrigationfacilities, increased naturalcalamities etc. In order to addressthese issues the NAIP project (SRLS)component III “LivelihoodImprovement and Empowerment ofRural Poor through SustainableFarming Systems in North EastIndia” is being implemented in the

disadvantaged districts of North East India. Thespecific objective of the National AgriculturalInnovation Project is to accelerate the collaborativedevelopment and application of agriculturalinnovations between public research organizations,NGOs, farmers, private sectors and otherstakeholders to demonstrate the strength (also theneed) of farming system approach at farmers fieldfor production enhancement, natural resourceconservation and livelihood improvement in aparticipatory mode to pave the way towardssustainable agriculture in NE region.

Implementation Progress

The project has been implemented in sevendisadvantaged districts of North East India exceptAssam. The implemented sites (Fig. 1) are locatedin the most backward districts namely UpperSubansiri (Arunachal Pradesh), Tamenglong(Manipur), South Garo Hills (Meghalaya), Saiha(Mizoram), Mon (Nagaland), North Sikkim(Sikkim) and Dhalai (Tripura) with an aim toimprove the livelihood of the rural poor by adoptingthe strategies of sustainable natural resource

management, productivity and profitabilityenhancement, building support systems andinstitutions.

Some of the significant findings of the sub-component are given below

Various site specific technological interventionssuch as integrated farming system for effectivenatural resource management, agro-forestry forrehabilitation of degraded land, resourceconservation technologies viz. system of riceintensification (SRI), integrated crop management(ICM), zero tillage, poly-house technology fornursery and year round vegetables production,composite pisciculture, supplying seeds/breeds ofhigh yielding crops/livestock breeds/fish, multiplecropping to increase cropping intensity, scientificcultivation and value addition of spices andhorticultural crops, usage of farm implements,subsidiary income generation activities, etc. hasbeen taken up during 2007-2012 as part of theproject with an aim to ensure sustainable rurallivelihood. Some of the site specific successfultechnologies identified are SRI/ICM in Dhalai andSouth Garo Hills where the average productivityof high yielding rice varieties under SRI/ICM hasbeen 3.8 t/ha as against 2.4 t/ha with local varietyand local practice. Farmers earned a net profit ofRs. 25,300 ha/year by adopting SRI/ICM methodsof rice cultivation. In Tamenglong, zero tillage toriacultivation has been a success where 172 ha areahas been brought under zero tillage cultivation andthe average productivity realized was 0.80 t/ha.

Farmers could earn a net income of Rs 16,000/ha/yr from toria cultivation. Terracing for panikhetiwas a success in Mon where the averageproductivity of high yielding rice varieties(Lampnah and Shahsarang-1) was 3.9 t/ha as against1.2 t/ha with local variety. Farmers could earn anet income of Rs 19,400/ha/yr. In North Sikkim,high value vegetables such as tomato, capsicum,cauliflower and broccoli were cultivated underpolyhouse under year round vegetable production.An average yield of 23.43 t/ha was achieved asagainst 13.5 t/ha by farmers practice. Farmers couldearn a gross income of Rs. 4,66,300/ha. Fish basedintegrated farming system was a success in SouthGaro hills where the average productivity of fishwas 2.98 t/ha/yr as compared to 0.6 t/ha/yr underfarmers practice. Farmers could earn a net incomeof Rs. 20,000/500 m2 pond water area. Fish basedfarming system has been identified as profitableinterventions in Dhalai too. In Upper Subansiri,under year round vegetable cultivation; vegetablessuch as chilli, cabbage and french bean were grownunder poly house. The average yield of thesevegetables was 111.5 t/ha as against 82.8 t/ha byfarmers practice. In Saiha, 70 ha area was coveredunder turmeric cultivation and one turmericprocessing unit was installed for making dryturmeric powder. Depending upon the availabilityof dried turmeric rhizomes for making turmericpowder, 200 – 400 kg of powder is processed permonth. Turmeric powder is sold at a wholesale priceof Rs. 20/100 g packet. The impact of thesetechnologies in the identified clusters has attracted

other farmers and thereby, facilitating horizontaladoption of the technologies, thus paving the waytowards marketable and proccessable surplus withassociated benefit for livelihood improvementthrough agriculture and allied sector.

Success Stories and Up-Scalable Technologies

All the consortium partners of NAIPComponent-III under the sub-project entitled“Livelihood Improvement and Empowerment ofRural Poor through Sustainable Farming Systemsin North East India” have successfully implemented

the project in their concern districts and as a resultquite a few successful technologies emerged inrespective areas. These technologies were widelyaccepted by the farmers and enhanced thelivelihood of small and marginal farmerssubstantially. Considering the potential of suchtechnologies for enhancing productivity, incomeand livelihood of small and marginal farmers,efforts were made to document such technologiesfor upscaling them in other disadvantaged areas foruplifting rural livelihood.

Introduction

Fish culture forms an integral part of the peoplein the 11 selected villages of Sibbari Cluster, underGasuapara C.D Block, South Garo Hills,Meghalaya and is one of the important sources ofincome for the farmers in this area. Most of thefarmers are having small size pond (500 to 600 m2)where only fish were reared by conventionalmethod before implementation of the project. Theponds were mostly unutilized/underutilized andinfested with aquatic weeds. The farmers were notmaintaining their fish pond scientifically whichleads to low productivity of fish (500-600 kg/ha)nor they were integrating fish with any othercomponent. Hence, the income from the fish culturewas meager.

Composite fish farming with the integration ofother component such as duck, pig, goat, vermi-composting and agri-horticultural crops has greatscope in the cluster area to increase the waterproductivity/productivity of fish/animal/agricultural crops/horticultural crops etc. therebyincreasing the income of the farming communityin the 11 selected villages of Sibbari cluster inparticular and South Garo Hills district in general.

Rationale

Integration of aquaculture with crops,vegetables, fruits and livestock would efficientlyutilize natural resources, reduce farmers risk andgenerate year round employment and income forsustainable livelihood improvement.

Objectives

1. To conserve the rain water in farm pond andutilize for life saving irrigation for agri-horticultural crops etc.

2. To utilize the water bodies for composite fishculture and integrate with duck, piggery,

vermicomposting and agri-horticultural cropsfor enhancing livelihood.

3. Effective utilization of on-farm resources andtheir recycling to reduce cost of production.

Methodology

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), ICAR, Turaand ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region,Umiam has made intervention on fish based farmingsystem and selected 77 households during 2009-12. During 2012-13, another 50 ponds are plannedto bring under farming system models from newlyselected sites.➢ Trainings were conducted on composite fish

farming, integrated farming, water harvestingto develop skill of the farmers

➢ Dug out 35 new ponds (500 m2) and renovated42 shallow underutilized ponds scientifically.

➢ Constructed low cost pig/goat houses near thepond dykes and duck sheds over the water bodiesusing locally available materials like bamboo,wooden logs, thatch grass, GI sheet etc.

➢ Distributed 3 piglets (Hampshire), 10 ducks(Sonali), 2 goats (Black bengal) as per demandof the community restricting to maximum of twolivestock components per household.

➢ Duck droppings were directly allowed to fallon pond water to promote plankton growth toserve as fish feed.

➢ Kitchen wastes, tuber crops, rice bran etc. alongwith limited quantity of concentrates were usedas feed for pigs by the farmers.

➢ Installed low cost vermicomposting unit on thepond dyke and paddy straw, vegetable and othercrops waste, mixed weed, etc. were used forvermicomposting.

➢ Planted banana, arecanut, guava, Assam lemonetc on the pond dyke and on the unused areanear the pond.

➢ Vegetables like bottle gourd, lablab bean,laipatta etc were cultivated in the pond dyke,whereas crops like tomato, cole crops werecultivated in nearby areas.

➢ Lime was applied based on the pH of the waterand the pond was manured before stocking thefish fingerlings.

➢ Fingerlings of catla, rohu, mrigal, silver carp,grass carp and common carp are stocked at10000 nos/ha in the ratio of 1.5:1.5:1.5:2:1.5:2

➢ Rice variety Ranjit was planted under SRI inadjacent fields with 50% recommended fertilizer+ pig manure 5t/ha.

➢ During dry season the harvested water frompond was used for life saving irrigation of crops,vegetables and fruit plants

Results

The average unit area of integrated farmingsystem model was 1500 m2 including pond (500m2), vegetables in dykes/nearby area (500m2), ricein adjacent low land (500m2) and fruits in ponddyke (Table 1). Farmers intensified the utilization

of pond dyke by growing vegetables in the lowerlayer and bottle gourd in the upper layer (indigenousbamboo made structure Fig.2 & 3). Farmers netincome ranged from Rs. 21, 400 (2009-10) to Rs.37, 400 (2011-12) with B: C ratio of 2.69 to 2.83(Table 2).

Discussion

The number of farm family involved in pondbased integrated farming system increasedconsistently over 2009 to 12 (Fig 4). Theinterventions have made great impact on farmfamilies, and farming communities in terms ofhigher productivity of fish, pig, duck as well as agri-hortcultural crops which lead to higher net returnand benefit cost ratio in comparison to traditionalfish farming only. The livelihood of the farmershas been improved with the additional income fromother components of fish based farming system. Thepond dyke utilization component has got specialattention of farmers in various clusters. Farmer

grown banana, vegetables on pond embankment andearned a good income besides meeting their ownconsumption requirement. Mr. Nathan Sangma,Mandangre village sold banana worth Rs.10,000in a single year from his system which has attractedattention of other farmers. The goat componentincluded in IFS for the farmers (Hajong community)who are not undertaking pig husbandry startedgiving income. The income and employment offarm family enhanced by about 213 and 130 %respectively, over farmers practice. The people ofSibbari cluster have learned new things withintegration of various components and doing thingsdifferently than they used to do earlier.

Introduction

Soil and climatic conditions of valleys of SouthGaro Hills are suitable for rice cultivation but theproductivity of rice was very low due to cultivationof local varieties or meager fertilizer/manureapplication and poor agronomic practices.

The farmers of the Sibbari cluster of 11 selectedvillages under Gasuapara C.D Block in the districtof South Garo Hills are mostly small and marginal.Wages, agriculture and allied small scale activitieswere their main source of income with traditionalmethod of cultivation before implementation of theproject. The farmer was growing paddy with theseed rate of 75-80 kg/ha in traditional method ofcultivation. The total area under Sali paddy in thedistrict was 3,338 ha with the productivity of 1,053kg/ha. However, the area under Sali paddy inGasuapara block was 1,177/ha with the productivityof 986 kg/ha.

Rationale

By adopting System of Rice Intensification(SRI) and Integrated Crop Management (ICM)methods of rice culture, the farmers could increasethe productivity of paddy, reduced the cost ofcultivation thereby, earning an additional incomefor themselves with less effort and save seed, water,nutrient, time etc. Thus, the programme would makean excellent impact in improving the livelihoodstandard of the farmers in the adopted villages.

Objectives

1. To increase the rice productivity withimproved method of cultivation and highyielding varieties

2. To save seed, water, nutrient, time etc3. To increase the cropping intensity by

cultivating pea/toria in rice fallows.

Methodology

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra,ICAR, Tura and ICAR, Umiamthrough village survey, selected35 farmers for training anddemonstration on SRI and ICMcultivation technology andmanagement. Trainings wereconducted on SRI (Seed-5 kg/ha,seedling age-10 days, spacing-25x 25 cm) and ICM (Seed-10 kg/ha, seedling age-20 days,spacing-20 x 20 cm) anddemonstration on nursery bedpreparation, land preparation,transplanting, weeding with conoweeder and on maintainingintermittent/shallow water level

Integrated nutrient management with 50%NPK (40:30:20 kg/ha) + FYM 5t/ha was advocated.High yielding variety Ranjit was used as test crop.Conventionally farmers transplant 30 daysseedlings, 4-5 seedlings/hill and follow randomtransplanting. Rice was harvested leaving 20-30 cmstubble height. Rabi crops like pea (Prakash/Vikash) and toria (TS 36) were grown with residualsoil moisture in rice fallow.

Results

The yield of Ranjit variety was recorded at 4.67t/ha and 4.24 t/ha through SRI and ICMrespectively, as compared to 2.19 t/ha throughfarmers practice. Farmers could earn a net income

of Rs. 27,200 and Rs. 23,400 with B: C ratio of2.39 and 2.23, respectively, through SRI and ICMmethod of rice cultivation (Table 1 and pictorialdepiction in Fig. 3 & 4)

Discussion

The interventions have made great impact onparticipants, families, and farming communities interms of higher productivity of paddy, net returnand benefit cost ratio in comparison to traditionalpractices which leads to self-sufficiency of foodfor sustainable livelihood improvement. The peopleof Sibbari cluster have learned new things and doingthings differently than they used to do before.

The farmers were getting 1.5-2.2 t/ha of paddywith traditional method of cultivation which hasincreased to 4.2-4.3 t/ha under SRI and ICM methodof cultivation. The farmers are happy with less seeds(20%), water (50-60%) and cost of inputs etc.required for SRI & ICM method of establishmentcompared to conventional rice culture. The newtechnology of SRI and ICM gave more number oftillers/hill (15-20) and higher panicle length (24-25 cm) leads to higher productivity compared totraditional farmers’ practices. The significant aspectwas that SRI and ICM rice matured 7 to 12 daysearlier compared to same variety under farmerspractice. Hence, it paved way for timely cultivation

of second crops like pea, toria with residualmoisture in rice field and thereby, enhancingcropping intensity. The average productivity of pea

and toria was 1.8 t and 0.55 t/ha respectively, givinga net income of Rs. 20,000 and 8,500/ha,respectively.

Introduction

Farmers in selected site of Meghalaya growplantation crops in a piece of land (mixed farming)and also jhum farming system is prevalent. Paddyand maize are the major cereals crops andcashewnut and arecanut are the major plantationcrops grown by the farmers. Vegetables are grownin a very low scale. Before RRTC interventionspeople in the selected clusters of South Garo HillsDistrict used to cultivate few types of vegetablewith little care which resulted in very lowproduction which could hardly meet their familyrequirements.

Fishery is also another source of livelihood forthe farmers in Sibbari cluster. Farmers are havingsmall size ponds (500-600 m2) in their backyardsor near their paddy fields. However, fishes arereared in unmanaged ponds infested with weedsand economically less fish species resulting in verylow water productivity. But after RRTCintervention the farmers realized the potential offish cum vegetable farming. Now the farmers aregrowing at least five to seven types of vegetablesround the year near in the pond dykes and theproductivity of fishes has increased from a meager500-600 kg/ha to 2.5 t/ha. They are now able toproduce surplus quantity of vegetables and fishes.

Objective

The main aim is to educate the farmers aboutthe scientific methods of fish cum vegetablefarming, improve the socio-economic status of ruralfarmers by improving the production and income.

Methodology

Various training and demonstration onintegrated farming system was conducted tosensitize the farmers about the benefits they canderive by adopting this new technology. Some ofthe farmers after participation in training showsgreat interest hence are able to achieve their goalsand sets an example for the fellow farmers to adoptthis modern method of farming.

Results

To achieve the desired results action plan werefollowed which includes awareness program ofparticipants on productivity and effectiveness,trainings, maximum utilization of waste land formaximum profit. Mr. Welstone D Shira has realizedthe benefits from IFS where he could earn a netincome of Rs. 15,000 from vegetables and Rs.60,000 from fishes in a single year from his farming(Table 1). The B:C ratio was 3.30:1.

Introduction

Ginger is predominantly cultivated in all thedistricts of Sikkim in mandarin-ginger, maize-ginger, beans-ginger cropping systems. Newcultivation practices were introduced and adoptedby a large section of ginger growers. But at laterstage, many farmers gave up ginger cultivationwhile others are still struggling to survive because,over the last 15-20 years, diseases severely affectedthe crop resulting in a decline in the yield ratio from1 ‘seed’ rhizome to 8-10 harvested rhizomes to only1 to 2-3.

There is ample scope for further improvementof production and productivity of ginger for raisingthe income level of the farming community of thestate. Yield loss under real farming condition canbe attributed to several biotic and abiotic factors,important among them are improper motherrhizome selection as seed material, lack of seedtreatment, poor drainage, lack of knowledge on croprotation, faulty cultural practices and timely plantprotection measures.

Ginger became the main cash crop in Dzonguarea of North Sikkim after severel decline in thelarge cardamom area. Both the crops play a vitalrole in the state economy in terms of direct andindirect income and employment generationprovided with immediate identification of problemsand knowledge intensity.

Sikkim is among the major producer of gingercontributing to the 5 % of countries productionalthough productivity of the ginger from the statehas increased from 4.8 tonnes/ha in 2002 – 2003 to5.3 t/ha in 2006-2007, which has not kept pace inwith all India average.

Rationale

Apart from working as farm labour, farmersengages them self in different farm activities likeoff-season vegetable cultivation in green houses,

large cardamom cultivation, small scale handloomand handicraft etc. to earn additional income.

These ventures however, were not very muchprofitable commensurate with the amount of labourinvolvement. There was a long felt need among thefarmer, farmwomen and rural youth to start theproduction of organic ginger production in theregion.

Although, farmers were aware about thecultivation and profitability of ginger crop butlacked about the improved production technologyfor economic viability and having the problem inprocurement of quality planting materials forfurther multiplication, proper processing andorganized marketing.

Scope of the programmeGinger var. Bhaisey is most suitable and widely

cultivated in the state owing to its simple cultivationtechnology, low production cost and its adaptability.It grows well in warm and humid climate up to thealtitude of 2000 m above mean sea level and annualrainfall of 3000-3500 mm. However, an optimumelevation for its successful cultivation is 300-900m with moderate climatic conditions which is atpar with Dzongu region. Irrigation is not requiredin this region as soil has enough moisture due toregular rain. Farmers of Dzongu area werecultivating ginger in mandarin orchard for thepartial shade but scientific methods were notfollowed. The significant aspect of the technologyintervention to the farmers was the introduction ofhigh yielding variety, crop rotation, soil treatmentwith trichoderma and vermi composting of on farmresidues for soil health improvement.

Methodology

Initially the ICAR Research Complex for NEHRegion, Sikkim Centre, Tadong conducted PRAexercise and found that the income of the farmersdecreased drastically because of the decline in largecardamom production. Selection of the beneficiarywas made on the Basis of the interest of farmersand SHG, involving panchayat presidents andpanchayat secretaries of the particular panchayat.In the first year of the project implementation, eliteplanting material of ginger was supplied from ICARSikkim centre along with improved productiontechnology. In the consecutive years, the plantingmaterial produced from the selected beneficiarieswere procured under the project and distributed

among the newly selected beneficiaries involvinglocal panchayat (Table 1).

Hands on training to the selected farmers werepracticed after every distribution of input (Fig 1 &2). Production technology of ginger under organiccondition is disseminated and popularized throughintroduction of nursery technology for majorhorticultural crops under NAIP-III among the tribalfarmers at Dzongu, North Sikkim during 2008-12.

ResultsAltogether 115 households were benefitted from

ginger cultivation in Dzongu area of North Sikkim.The average area per farmer under gingercultivation was 0.10 ha. The production of gingerwas 26 t/ha (Table 2).

Discussion

Each farmer has gained a net income of Rs26,000 from an area of 0.10 ha from their produceat the selling price of Rs. 15/kg. Farmers have learntimproved production technology of ginger seedproduction by utilizing the available unused plotsand at the same time they got the opportunity togenerate some extra income for improving theirlivelihood.

Introduction

Sikkim Mandarin is similar to the Nepal orAssam or Darjeeling Mandarin. Citrus reticulate isa highly polyembryonic species, having mediumsized upright trees. In Sikkim, mandarin iscultivated in an area of about 6,300 hectares, witha total average annual production of about 17,190t. The important orange producing areas are theTista and Rangeet river valleys within the elevationrange of 600 to 1500 m above mean sea level.Tashiding, gyalshing, Omchung, Tijyah, Lingchom,Bermiok, Barthang, Rinchenpong, Chinthang,Chakung, Zoom, Timberbong, Karthok in the West;Kewsing, Lingmoo, Sangmoo, Yangang, Payong,Rateypani, Namthang, Tarku, Tokal- Bermiok,Turuk, Sumbuk in the South Nazitam, Sang,Simiklingy, Khamdong, Sirwani, Samdong in theEast and Dikchu and Hee-Gyathang in the Northdistrict of Sikkim are the important orange growingareas of Sikkim. Sikkim mandarin is the leadingcash crop among fruit crops in Sikkim. Theproductivity is comparatively lower than Nationalproductivity because of unavailability of diseasefree planting materials, general negligence andimproper management of insect-pests and diseases.Production of quality planting materials of SikkimMandarin has tremendous potential in Sikkimbecause of its congenial climate, low costproduction technology. The momentum of nurseryproduction of orange in Sikkim is slow due to dearthof knowledge about production technology, lack ofskill in nursery management, marketing, etc.

Apart from working as farm labour, farmersengaged themselves in different farm activities likeoff-season vegetable cultivation in green houses,large cardamom cultivation, ginger cultivation etc.

to earn additional income. These ventures however,were not very much profitable commensurate withthe amount of labour involvement. Although,farmers were aware about the profitability ofproduction of Sikkim mandarin but were ignorantabout the organic means of low cost mandarinnursery technology and about organized marketingetc.

Scope of the Programme

Various aspects of nursery production andmanagement had not received proper attention inthe past. Therefore, many diseases had spread tothe virgin areas bringing about economic losses inmost of the citrus growing areas of Sikkim. Theycause decline, loss of vigor, low yield, poor qualityfruits and short commercial life of orchards whichcould be initially managed by the use of healthynursery trees. Non availability of quality plantingmaterial is one of the major constraints in obtainingexpected quality and productivity in fruits. Theplanting materials must be sourced fromconsistently high yielding diseased free plants.Mandarin nursery management should be investedfor improvement in terms of quality seedlingsproduction technology. Proper knowledge inmanagement of nursery for the production of goodquality seedlings is the most essential componentfor the establishment and development of goodmandarin orchard. It germinates and grows well inwarm and humid climate up to the altitude of 1500m above mean sea level. However, an optimumelevation for its successful cultivation is 300-1500m with moderate climatic conditions which is atpar with Dzongu region. Raising of disease freeelite planting materials is the foundation of anysuccessful orchard establishment. The strategy ofinvestment on high quality nursery tree has thegreatest impact on cost ratio benefit of any orchard.

Objectives

1. To develop skills of the farmers in nucellarseedling production

2. To produce quality planting material ofmandarin for productivity and incomeenhancement

Methodology

Selection of the beneficiary was made on thebasis of the interest of farmers and SHG, involvingpanchayat presidents and panchayat secretaries ofthe particular panchayat. The beneficiaries (Table1) were provided all the necessary input afterrigorous hands on training on the productiontechnology of nucellar seedling production ofSikkim mandarin. Production technology ofnucellar seedling (Fig 1) of mandarin isdisseminated and popularized through introductionof nursery technology for major horticultural cropsunder NAIP-III among the tribal farmers at Dzongu,North Sikkim during 2008-12.

Results

The average size of each poly house was 300m2 and a total no of 12 poly houses were establishedduring 2008-2010. The cost of cultivation rangesfrom 60,000 to Rs. 65,000 per poly house and theyearn a net income ranging from Rs. 1,35,000 to Rs.1,40,000 (Table 2).

The farmers are selling their produce to otherSHGs and private firms and the demand is soaringyear by year. The amount generated through sellingof seedlings (Table 3) is an example of few farmerswho have sold their produce during 2009-2012.

Discussion

Farmers have learnt the technique of nucellarseedling production and nursery management ofSikkim mandarin. Each SHG has gained a netincome of Rs 1,35,000-1,40,000/ 300 m2 polyhousearea from the seedling production. Hence, the

farmers got the opportunity to generate some extraincome for improvement of their livelihood.

Results

Establishment of nurseries could address oneof the most critical issues that farmers were facing.The farmers generated quality planting materialduring planting season. Large cardamom is aperennial crop. Stable bearing starts after 4 years.Hence, outcome of replantation and rejuvenationcan be analyzed after 2012 only. However, anincrease in trend productivity of capsule 14.26 kg/ha was recorded from the rejuvenation area duringthe project implementation period. On an averageRs. 6,250 was earned by individual households(Table 1)

The existing situation has been changed as itwas before (Fig 1) the initiation of project in the

area, they started cultivating large cardamomscientifically (Fig 2). Nursery for large cardamommultiplication are adopted which were not in

practice before. At the time of project initiation(year 2007) the site did not have any quality clonemultiplication units. This was a main drawbackfor the farmers and large cardamom cultivation asa whole. They were dependent upon externalsources for undertaking replanting, gap filling. Anestablishment of 91 clone multiplication unit withSpices Board, Development Department andNREGA produced 11,37,500 planting unit for worthRs 56,87,500. At least 1:5 ratio could be maintainedfor the production of planting material within 9months.

Steps for Sustainability

Methodology for production of plantingmaterials has been generated as a long time assetin the project site. Planting materials productionwould be a continuous process and would generateincome after completion of the project tenure also.

Introduction

National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP)was started w.e.f. 29/06/2007 in Dzongu area ofNorth Sikkim under Indian Cardamom ResearchInstitute, Regional Station,Spices Board, Tadongcovering two Gram Panchayat Units (GPUs)namely Tingvong and Passingdang. The villagesunder these GPUs are Tingvong, Nung, Namprick,Kussong, Payal, Lingkoo, Lyngza, Mentam Laven,Passingdang, Upper Lingthem, Lower Linghtem,Sangkalang, Rukloo and Kayam. Base line surveywas carried out covering 111 households and it wasobserved that employment potential and the incomegeneration of the farmers were not enough to meettheir requirements because of steep decline ofproduction of large cardamom, as large cardamomwas the principal cash crop for them. The majorconstraints for the decline of the production wereidentified as high pest and diseases incidence, lackof availability of quality planting materials and lackof awareness for scientific method of cultivationetc. To mitigate the problem, steps were initiatedto produce large cardamom planting materials andcultivation of large cardamom in a farming systemmode to maintain sustainability of income. Underthe project 155 household with total population of807 (Male- 403, Female- 404) was brought underdifferent interventions.

Community Based Approach

Initially attempt was made to form communitybased organization (CBOs) for integration ofvarious available recourses. Thirteen Self HelpGroup (SHGs) with 140 members and 8 FarmersGroups (FGs) with 55 members were formed. TheCBOs facilitated empowerment of the farm familiesthrough collective and individual action in largecardamom and cultivation of other crops. Forproducing quality planting materials of largecardamom, in the beginning, 13 farmers were

selected for raising large cardamom nursery. Theyused 19,400 numbers mother suckers of varietyDzongu Golsey and Ramsey. After one year theyproduced suckers at the rate of 1:5. The materialswere used either for their area expansionprogramme, rejuvenation or selling. Thus theyproduced suckers with an estimated amount ofworth Rs, 3,88000. With the success of thistechnology other farmers were motivated andwithin four years approximately 11, 37,500numbers planting units were produced. They gotbenefit directly from NAIP or through linkage withother Departments viz., Spices Board (Dev)Manmgan and able to produce the above mentionedsuckers. The value of suckers was estimated as Rs56,87,500 and Rs 43,22,500 gross and net incomerespectively. The planting materials were used forarea expansion rejuvenation as well as selling also.New innovation of irrigation through SourceModification (50 nos.), silpaulin lined laterharvesting tank (48 nos), Shade Managementthrough planting of Alnus (17.1 ha) and introductionof ICRI Improved Bhatti (30nos.) (Fig 1) etc,provided additional employment opportunities andgenerated around 108930 man days. Cost of

installation ICRI bhatti was around Rs. 28,000(2007-08) with an expected life span of 10 years.The farmers got opportunity to cure their largecardamom capsule through the ICRI Improvedbhattis scientifically. The Improved bhattis curedcapsules fetches higher price around Rs. 50 to 100per kg in the auction market which was conductedby NARAMAC, Govt. of India with the help ofSpices Board (Marketing). This higher price forICRI Improved bhatti cured cardamom wasachieved due to better quality of the cardamomcapsule. In ICRI Improved bhatti, curing iscompleted through indirect heating process at atemperature ranges from 50 ± 5 OC. The curedproduct retained high oil content with attractivearoma, flavour and colour. Maintaining of thesequalities is not possible in Traditional bhattis (Fig2) cured product as the curing continues in a directheating process with smoke laden heat. The curedcapsule in traditional bhatti (Fig 2) imparts charred,black, unattractive colour with less aroma, flavorand low oil content. Around 100 farmers benefitedfrom ICRI improved bhattis during 2008 -11.

Nutritional security and sustainable income

Nutritional security and income throughcultivation of vegetables in homestead garden wasalso achieved with the innovation and introductionof drip irrigation systems (11 nos.). Farmerscultivated vegetable during winter season takingthe help of drip irrigation. About 1.0 ha area wasbrought under the cultivation of winter vegetable

in Passingdong and Tingvong , Dzongu, NorthSikkim. They got input (seeds) from their own aswell as from other Govt. agencies. An estimatedproduction was near about 10 ton from where theyearned a gross income of around Rs 1,00,000 andnet income of Rs. 40,000 per year. Thus net incomegenerated through cultivation of vegetables wereestimated as Rs 1,60,000 in 4 years. Cultivation ofgarlic was started as a component with largecardamom farming system and achieved productionat the ratio of 1: 6.8. Honey bee boxes (48 no)were supplied which provided nutrition security andincome to farm families. The income per familyper year was estimated as Rs 400/- per hive.Therefore, a total of Rs 19,200 per year wasobtained by 48 families. Besides this, improvementof quality and production of all the crops grownnearby the bee colonies was noticed due to properpollination. However, there is great scope toincrease income through scientific management andor by creating awareness programme. Citrus wasplanted with cardamom for maintainingsustainability. Disease management programmeand training on scientific cultivation of crops inthe form of Spice Clinic, bio-agent production,exposure visits etc was given which empoweredthe farmers for maintaining sustainability ofemployments opportunity and income. Ten SHGsstarted maintain their sustainable fund.

Model farmer

Mr. Nakri Lepcha (50 yrs), Tingvong GPU,Dzongu was a farmer beneficiary of NAIP. Hecovered 2.1 ha under different facilities providedby NAIP. He cultivated vegetables, raised largecardamom nursery, rejuvenated and expanded largecardamom cultivation in his homestead garden (Fig3). He utilized available water through silpaulinlined water harvesting tank constructed in upperpart of his garden. An ICRI improved bhatti wasconstructed near his home which was being usedfor drying large cardamom to make good qualitycapsule. He was able to extend this facility to otherfarmers also. Mr. Lepcha was able to generate anestimated income of Rs. 2,95,500 (estimated valueof planting materials and from other sources from2.1 ha area) during 2008-2011 (Table 1). Thus hisaverage net income per day was estimated aroundRs 205.21. He got opportunities to offer work

avenue to his 5 family members in his garden. Hewas able to extend large cardamom curing facilityto other farmers also.

Introduction

In the northeastern hilly regions of India andNepal, women are among the main benefactors ofMultiple-Use water Schemes (MUS)

The MUS are providing more controlled andreliable water supplies for household needs andmore productive agricultural activities in thenortheastern hilly regions of India and Nepal. Inthis region, only 5% of the existing water resourcesare used for economic activities. A surfeit of waterwreaks havoc in the rainy season, while householdssuffer acute water shortages in the dry season. Theimpact of MUS on household income and the statusof women has been significant.

Management innovation

Most farm households in this region grow rice,millet, corn and a few other crops using a traditionalform of agriculture called Jhum, also known as slashand burn agriculture. Most people immediatelythink of the negative environmental impacts of slashand burn agriculture, but one of its main drawbacksis the very low yields. Slash and burn agriculture isalso a poverty trap. Farmers would like to growmore vegetables and fruit trees but changingfarming practices requires reliable supplies ofwater.

Several farm-level water managementinnovations and indigenous practices have beentried in the past, including integrated watershedmanagement, water harvesting, multi-commodityfarming systems, bamboo drips, and storingrainwater in plastic-lined ponds or ferro-cementtanks. Some of these methods have found favouramong local authorities and policymakers, but mostmeet only agricultural water needs and even thenthey generally do not provide sufficient suppliesduring the dry season.

What smallholder farmers need is a water supplysystem that provides water for both domestic needsand high-value agricultural production, including

livestock. Such a system needs to be flexible sothat householders can switch from domestic toproductive use to match seasonal demands. It hasto be simple with low maintenance costs, and itmust ensure equitable access. Such systems arecalled MUS (Fig 1).

Matching MUS design with user needs

The basic designs for MUS are based on: groundwater/lake water lifting and distribution; rainwatercollection and distribution; spring water distributedby gravity system; and stream/river water supplyafter treatment (Fig. 2). Most MUS are designed tocover 10 to 40 households. In some cases, up to 80households have been provided service from MUS.Design of an MUS accords first priority to drinking

water and domestic use. This is in line with thegovernment’s policy on water resourcesdevelopment. The design criteria assume 45 litersper person per day for domestic use, and 400-600liters per household for productive use. The finaldesign is decided by technicians in consultationwith community users based on their localknowledge and stated needs.

Working with local authorities, researchers fromthe International Water Management Institute(IWMI) and International Development Enterprises(IDE) installed MUS in the hilly regions of Nepaland organized cross-learning programs between theIndian and Nepalese researchers, policymakers andfarmers. A water-poverty mapping technique helpedidentify the best areas to target in the study villagesin Nagaland and Sikkim states of India.

An evaluation of the schemes installed showedthat they met the key criteria with the added benefitof low initial investment costs (approximately USD

200 per household) and short cost-recovery periods.With MUS, households can earn an additionalannual income of about USD 190 through the saleof surplus produce, which means that the systemhas a payback period of only one year.

The MUS also have many other non-monetarybenefits, especially for women. Women are theprime focus groups of all the multiple water use-related project activities. When villages adoptMUS, women generally take up key positions inMUS user committees, empowering them to leadand link with other agencies. The additional incomethey earn from the sale of vegetables and otherproduce provides financial independence andenhances financial decision making. MUS alsoreduces women’s workload by decreasing the timeneeded to collect water (free labor). More vegetableconsumption provides better nutrition for womenand children, which translates into savings onmedical care (Fig. 4).

Agriculture (jhum cultivation) is the main stayof people of the villages in Mon District, Nagaland.87% of the population is very poor. Malnutritionprevails in almost every family. Their mainemployment is agriculture but the field is very far,Therefore, for enhancing the productivity to getnutritional security and income generation, also toutilize the land near the households, kitchen gardenconcept was introduced including green leafyvegetables, ready to eat vegetables etc.

By knowing the agro-climatic condition and thatthe villagers popularly grow tuber crops such astapioca and colocasia, potato was introduced forthe first time to get nutrition as well as to generateincome and also to use the cultivated jhum landafter the harvest. The villagers were rearing birdsbut local breed which is small in size, Therefore,kroiler and vanaraja were introduced for more meatproduction.

Significance of interventions

1. The intervention could help them to identifythe suitable varieties of vegetable crops tobe grown in both summer and winter seasonsin home yards.

2. It gives them additional nutrition and couldearn extra amount which would empowerespecially the women folk.

3. Potato cultivation would enhance foodsecurity and generate additional income.

4. Inclusion of backyard poultry farming wouldfurther enhance farmers’ income and providelivelihood.

Objectives

To introduce kitchen gardening, potatocultivation and back yard poultry farming for food,

nutrition and liveli8hood improvement of ruralfarmers.

Methodology

Vegetable crops like chilli, bean, raddish,tomato, brinjal etc. were introduced in kitchengarden/homeyards. Potato varieties Kurfi Kanchan,Kurfi, Jyoti, Kurfi Giriraj was introduced, 10-15 t/ha. Application of organic manure was advocatedfor higher productivity. 10 nos. of broiler birds weredistributed to each household.

Results

Following are the results obtained by SASARD,Nagaland University during three years livelihoodprojects under NAIP-3 in Mon district of Nagaland.The following table 1, 2 & 3 and pictorial depiction(Fig. 1, 2 (a & b) &3) illustrates the growers’condition that was and what they were and aregetting now.

Discussion

The socio-economic condition of the villagesbefore the project was very poor. Though the impactof NAIP is very clear, still it needs more time forsustainable development. However, theparticipants, families and community as a wholehave benefited a lot. No technologies were madeavailable earlier but through the interventions,awareness created and adoption of suitabletechnologies are taken up by the farmers. Theiracceptance, appreciation and impact of the projectis beyond doubt.

Introduction

In the NEH Region, scarcity of waterparticularly during the lean season is a majorconstraint in increasing the cropping intensity andits productivity. Due to the hilly terrain, the rainwater is lost either in the form of surface water orquick sub-surface runoff leading to low soilmoisture status and acute water scarcity fordomestic agricultural consumption during the rainyseason. By and large, monocropping is therefore,prevalent in the region. However, wherever wateris available, farmers opt for second cropping.Keeping this fact in view, an attempt has been madeto harvest water so as to make its judicious use forcultivation of the crops, fishery and livestock in anintegrated manner.

Rationale

In Lampong Sheanghah village where theproject intervention is taken place about 90% ofthe farmers were below povertyline as per their socio economicstatus. Nevertheless, agricultureis the main source ofsubsistence. Only upland cropswere cultivated in the target areabefore the intervention. Uplandpaddy, fox tail millet, colocasia,tapioca and some seasonalvegetables were mainlycultivated by the villagers. Theaverage productivity of rice wasrecorded as1.02 t/ha in Jhumfields. Since water harvestingstructures were not available inthe village, the possibility of fishrearing was ruled out. As per thebaseline survey, a total of 46 nos.of non-descript type of pigs werebeing reared with daily weight

gain of 42.5 ± 2.3 g/day. (A total of 31 nos. of goatswere also being reared before intervention in thevillage.)

Objectives

Harvesting rainwater from roof, spring etc forlife saving irrigation and multiple use to improvethe livelihood of the small and marginal farmers.

Methodology

Two nos. of hillocks were selected forimplementation of the activity in three-tier system.For restoration, agroforestry block was developedon both the hill tops followed by horticulture in themiddle of the hillock and terracing in the lower partof the hillocks. Water was diverted from the streamthrough irrigation channel (Fig 1), pipes andconserved in six nos. of water harvesting structureswhich was used for irrigating the crops particularlyduring the lean season, and for fishery and livestock

consumption. Roof top rainwater harvesting (Fig2) structure was also designed, fabricated andinstalled specially to ensure the drinking watersupply during the scarcity period. A low costmodified thai jar (Fig 3) has been designed,fabricated and constructed for promoting multiplewater use in Lampong shenghah village. A pig unit(2 piglets for fattening) was also integrated withsmall scale quaculture.

Results

● The crop productivity, particularly of rice hasincreased by two-folds as compared to theproductivity of indigenous landrace havingthe productivity of 2 ton/ha (Table 1).

● Various off -season vegetables viz. radish,French bean, carrot, coriander etc. are beinggrown with limited irrigation facilities.

● The improved germplasm of livestock,particularly of pig, was introduced in thevillage and the growth performance wasrecorded to be 156±10.2 g/day as comparedto the productivity of nondescript type ofpigs, i.e. 42.5±2.3 g/day.

● Integrated fish farming (fish-cum-pig) wasintroduced in the village. Three exotic carpsand three Indian carps species were rearedand the fish productivity was recorded to be1.4 ton/ha.

● Efforts have been made for recycling ofwithin farm renewable resources.

● The technologies available for the Institutepertaining to recycling of the water andintegrated farming system mode of foodproduction was used for multiple livelihoodoption based on the water resource-based.

● Efforts have been made for recharge of thespring water flow r by planting multipurposetree (MPTs) on abandoned Jhum field (Fig4).

Discussion

Since shifting cultivation was the mainstay ofeconomy of the villagers before implementation ofthe project, the concept of water harvesting and itsmultiple use was new to them. During theimplementation of the project, major thrust wasgiven for water harvesting and its multiple use basedon the lessons learnt from the past. The netmonetary income of the farmers has increasedsignificantly with the present intervention. It hasopen up a new avenue for increasing productionand productivity not only in the target area but alsoin other villages of Mon district of Nagaland.

Impact

● The stake holders have gained the needfulemployment, food and nutritional securitybesides income generation with the presentintervention. Integrated fish farming isbecoming very much popular and farmers aretrying to integrate fishery with poultry andeven with cattle.

● Efforts are being made by the student unionof the target area to conserve the forestedareas so as to recharge the streams, whichotherwise was not being followed by thembefore implementation of NAIP programme.

Sustainability

● Training has been imparted to the stakeholders for integrated fish farming, wintervegetable cultivation and animal husbandry.Hence, local bodies have been developed tosustain the programme.

● Quality seed and planting material is beingmultiplied at the village level so as to makeit available to other beneficiaries also.

● Quality germplasm of the livestock, i.e.Large Black pig have been introduced forincrease production and integration withfishery.

● To sustain the fishery programme in thevillage, state government has been requestedto establish either eco hatchery or to providethe fish fingerlings to the beneficiaries forsustainability of the project.

Introduction

Monocropping was practiced in the villagebefore intervention (Fig 1) for terrace and uplandpaddy. Indigenous landrace, foxtail millet,colocasia, Tapioca and some seasonal vegetableswere grown by the farmers in the Jhum fields. Theproductivity of upland paddy was found to be lessthan 1 ton/ha, likewise productivity of colocasia,tapioca, foxtail millet was recorded to be 5.97,21.80 and 1.37 t/ha, respectively. In case oflivestock, the non – descript type of pigs were rearedin the village besides some goats. Prior toimplementation of the project, PRA exercise wascarried out besides frequent interaction with thevillagers. Almost all the SHGs suggested forcreating the facilities for wet-terrace cultivation(panikheti).

Rationale

Through wet land terrace cultivation, we intentto increase not only the rice productivity but alsoto introduce second cropping which otherwise werenot followed by the stakeholders. The

complementary role of livestock, fishery, andforestry was also proposed to harness not only toincrease the food production but also to providenutritional security to the farmers for round the yearemployment through agricultural practices.

Objective

To harvest rain water in terraces for ricecultivation and enhance cropping intensity bycultivating rabi crops with conserved residual soilmoisture.

Methodology

Terracing was followed in the lower part of thehillock with slope less than 30%. All the terraceswere made at a vertical interval of 1m keeping intactthe topmost soil there. Irrigation channels wereprepared to divert water from the streams to ricefield. Tomato, French bean, carrot, radish, potatoand coriander are being cultivated during the winterseason with limited assured irrigation facilities. Fornutrient management, a thick row of leguminoushedgerow species like Tephrosia candida andCrotolaria spp were planted and the green biomasswas mulched into the terraces (Fig 2). Farm pondfor water harvesting, aquaculture was dug outadjacent to terraces and one unit piggery (2 no)integrated for effective utilization and recycling ofon-farm resources.

Results

● The panikheti based IFS model demonstratedin farmers field has been depicted in Fig 3.

● Institute developed rice varieties –Shahsarang and Lampnah were cultivatedwhich showed the productivity enhancementby 3-fold as compared to the indigenouslandraces, i.e. Rakchu having theproductivity of 1.2 tone/ha in wetlandcondition.

● The cropping intensity which was recorded104% before the intervention has increasedto 146% after intervention.

● Before intervention, only upland paddy,colocasia, tapioca and fox tail millet weregrown indicating the symptoms ofmalnutrition. However, the nutritionalsecurity was achieved at the household levelonly after introduction of panikheti systemof cultivation.

● Beneficiaries have been identified for seedmultiplication programme of paddy, Frenchbean and potato.

● Efforts are being made to recharge thesprings in order to obtain the perennial flowfor wet land cultivation.

● Some of the villagers are making terraces ontheir own for sustained production.

Discussion

It has been observed that once the irrigationfacilities are assured, farmers are ready to take upthe second crop. Water harvesting offers theopportunities for integration of livestock andfisheries and the wet land cultivation shall be

converted into farming system mode of foodproduction. Farmers are cultivating their secondcrop in large scale which was not practiced before.

Impact

Terracing and assured irrigation has providedthe opportunity to the beneficiaries for round theyear cultivation. All the beneficiaries are alsointerested to increase the area under wet land terracecultivation. The beneficiaries having terraces havesignificantly stopped the shifting cultivation to agreat extent and a small area is being cultivatedunder Jhum by them for cultivation of some tubercrops like colocasia and tapioca, spices, sesamumand fox tail millet. Terracing is gaining popularityamong the other farmers of the village andimportant nutritional rich crops are being cultivatedby them.

Sustainability

Stake holders are multiplying the quality seedmaterial for transplanting of paddy.The seed material of the vegetables likeFrench bean and paddy, are being multipliedby some of stakeholders in order to make itavailable for their uses.The upper catchment area is beingrehabilitated by planting MPTs particularlyfor recharge of the spring.Due to integration of cereals, vegetables,livestock and fishery, there is year roundemployment and income to the farmers.Shifting cultivation has been stopped in theupper catchment of the terraced area.Nitrogen fixing and fast growing species likeSesbania susben, Tephrosia candida andCrotoleria are being planted on the field forsoil fertility build up.Due care is being taken for insect and pestsmanagement.

Introduction

Pigs are the most common and preferredlivestock species in Mon district of Nagaland.Almost 80% of households rear pigs (mostly 1 or 2pigs), mainly for fattening purpose. The productionsystem in the villages is very traditional, mainlybased on indigenous breeds. Feeding systems aremainly based on jungle forages and kitchen waste.Housing systems are poor and unhygienic. In manyareas access to veterinary services and improvedfarm inputs is almost nil or negligible. Pig producershave traditional knowledge and skills formanagement of pigs for fattening but few have theskills to successfully breed pigs. There has beenno concerted effort to improve the pig productionsystem in the project villages, leaving the wholesystem traditional and poorly remunerative. Thepoor production systems have largely failed to meetthe market requirement and to deliver livelihoodbenefits to the majority of people. But marketdemand for pig meat is high, offering good scopeto improve the systems and discussions with thelocal communities highlighted their eagerness toimprove the production and marketing of pigs toimprove their livelihoods.

Under the circumstances of poor financialresources to invest in the farming system, poorbreed quality, labour constraints, unavailability ofrequired feed resources and poor access toveterinary services, rapid transformation of the low-input, low-output system to a high –input, high-output system is not technically feasible noreconomically viable within a short span of time.Therefore an integrated community based approachis needed to bring about incremental changes inthe production system to improve productivity andefficiency. The critical need is to identify locallyrelevant and socially acceptable simple, costeffective interventions that best fit to the localcontext. The first step is to bring about attitudinalchange in the mindset of the people through

motivation and capacity building of the community.Strengthening of local social institutions and useof the same for putting peer pressure and for servicedelivery is another way forward to make theapproach a success.

Interventions need to be simple, cost effective,fully community driven and highly remunerative.

Rationale

The primary source of livelihood for the peopleof the project villages in Mon is agriculture, mainlycultivation of rice, millet, fruits, vegetables etc. inthe Jhum fields (slash and burn). Apart from cropcultivation, rearing of livestock especially pigs andbackyard poultry, collection of fire wood, pettytrading and wage labouring are secondary sourcesof income. Because of land fragmentation andshortening of the Jhuming cycle, production &productivity of the land is gradually decreasing andvillagers can hardly meet year-round requirementfor staple foods from the produce of Jhum fields.For 3-4 months a year, they face severe foodshortages and depend on non-conventional foodresources like tapioca, colocacia etc. as staples.Despite poor productivity of livestock, especiallypigs and poultry, the contribution of livestock tolivelihoods is well recognized by the villagersbecause of the savings & insurance function.Indigenous pigs take about 3-4 years to achievemarket weight (70-80 kg) while cross bred pigs takeonly 8-10 months to achieve the same weight.Selling an indigenous pig can earn Rs. 8000-10000in three ears time, while the same amount could beearned in only one year by rearing an improved pigunder improved management conditions. Incomecould be further increased by changing the fatteningherd (to produce slaughter pigs) to a breeding herd(to produce piglets). One sow gives at least 1farrowing per years and if 10 piglets are producedper farrowing one can earn Rs.20,000 by selling10 piglets at Rs.2,000 piglet.

Objectives

1. Transformation of the subsistence pigproduction system to a market-orientedproduction system through promotion of alocally suitable, innovative package of practicesfor increasing the productivity of smallholderpig production systems.

2. Adoption of community driven approaches thatare affordable and accessible in order to ensuresustainability and self replicability.

Methodology

Pig production and marketing systems in theproject villages were assessed throughparticipatory discussions with the communitymembers. The need, expectation, interest andavailability of resources of the communitymembers were also assessed at the beginningof the project.Local best practices were identified, assessedand suitable technologies/interventions wereidentified in consultation with the localcommunity members keeping in view theavailable financial resources and access to farminputs, services and markets.Self Help Groups (SHGs) were established.A sensitisation programme was launchedinvolving the local decision makers like Pastor,Chairman- Village Council, Students’ body etc.It was made clear to community members thatexcept for the capacity building programmes andsome critical farm input (like piglets, plantingmaterials of food-feed crops) all other inputslike feeding, management, construction of shedhave to come from the pig producers voluntarily.Knowledge gaps and training need of the targetgroup were assesed in consultation with thetarget beneficiaries and customized training onveterinary First Aid and Smallholder PigProduction & Management were designed anddelivered. All training programmes had refreshercourses after 4-5 months.The Hands-on-Gift Scheme was explained theSHG members and members were asked toidentify the best pig producers amongst themas the first-line beneficiaries. Only the first linebeneficiaries received assistance from theproject in the form of improved piglets, withthe pre-condition that after the first farrowing

they would give one or two piglets to one ortwo down line beneficiaries in the SHG. SHGmembers were also asked to select the down linebeneficiaries under each first line beneficiariesin advance in order to build the system of peerpressure.A system of veterinary service delivery wasestablished by training two community-selectedpersons on Veterinary First Aid for pigs in eachproject village. After the training they wereprovided with a First Aid kit with all requiredmedicine and utensils. They were also linked togovernment veterinary doctors, medicinesuppliers, feed suppliers etc. They are providedwith a small initial honorarium and encouragedto recover costs from their clients.The community was mobilized to invest theirown resources and time for construction of pigstys, drainage systems and manure pits,cultivation of food-feed crops and to maintainclean & hygiene practices. They were providedwith an initial supply of detergent andisinfectant.After building the capacity of communitymembers, putting the veterinary service deliverysystem in place and completion of construction/renovation of pig stys, each first line SHGmember was provided with one good qualitycross bred piglet (5 females and 1 male pigletto each SHG) to rear under improved conditions.Along with each piglet, 5 kg of concentrate feedwas also offered to ensure a good initial levelof nutrition.All first line beneficiaries were asked to cultivatefood-feed crops like sweet potato, tapioca,colocacia, maize etc. as mixed crop in thebackyard. ILRI collected and provided improvedvarieties of planting materials from severalnational and international organizations. Pigproducers were provided with advice andguidance on the cultivation of the crops.Market linkages were created by organizing aBuyers-Sellers meet in the villages where all therelevant stakeholders like pig retailers, piglettraders, feed seller, medicine sellers, veterinarydoctors attended.The First Aid Practitioners monitored andfollowed up the project activities and outputswith support from the project staff.

Introduction

Farmers of the Daporijo, Arunachal Pradesh hasbeen practicing Jhum farming from timeimmemorial. In the Jhum field generally they growas many crops as possible to meet their dailydemand. However, hardly they integrated Jhumfarming with aquaculture and livestocks. In thevalley lands of Jhum fields farmers can go fordigging ponds or the ponds can be made by makingdykes in one or two sides due to natural hillocks inother sides. Such ponds can be brought undercomposite pisciculture and may be integrated withlivestocks like pigs, poultry etc as per the demandof the farmers. Mrs. Yalom Lida is one among thefarmers who was willing to think in the way ofintegrated farming system.

Rationale

Integration of Jhum farming with fishery andlivestock would enhance farmers’ income andemployment beside effectively utilizing the landand improving food and nutritional security of tribalfarmers.

Methodology

Mrs. Yalom Lida of Lida village of Gusar circleof Daporijo district of Arunachal Pradesh had landarea of 1.2 ha under Jhum and her earnings werejust enough to feed her family. Considering thepotentiality of fish farming she developed a fishunit on her farm, but the pond remainedunderutilized.

Under NAIP intervention it was targeted toconvert her Jhum land to settled cultivation byintegrating livestock and crops with fish farming.Before starting the IFS activity she was providedtrainings at ICAR, Basar. Due to her exposure topractical trainings and demonstrations on IFS, she

gained confidence and adopted the technology. Thepond was renovated during dry season and someterraces were constructed at mid hill slopes, whilekeeping forest area intact on top hills. From theforest area water was diverted to her field byforming ditches. Low cost pig shed and poultryunits were constructed on the pond dyke and thepoultry droppings and pig shed washing werediverted to fish pond to promote growth of zooplankton and phyto-plankton to serve as fish feed.Additional pig excreta were collected in a near bypit and composted for manuring vegetables.Similarly, the waste of vegetables was used as feedfor the pig. Damaged and low quality maize seedswere used as feed for poultry. Farmers also broughttheir kitchen waste for feeding pigs and poultry.

Results

With her own cultivation practices she washarvesting the cereals (1.14t/ha), vegetables (3.45t/ha) and tuber crops (5 t/ha) with the respectivearea given in table. The total return from hertraditional way of cultivation was Rs. 13896/- only.However, after integrating the various componentsshe has increased her production and productivityof cereals by 2.71t/ha, vegetables 5.25 t/ha andstarted earning Rs. 73, 800/- from the above saidarea and components. She mostly earned the saidamount from livestock and fish. By seeing theperformance and profit of animal components sheis now converting her agricultural land to fish pond.The basic data are given in table 1 and 2.

Another farmer Mr. Pugo Digbak of Digbakvillage is a beneficiary of the activity. He has theJhum area of 1.0 ha and wet land of 1.5 ha. Beforeimplementing IFS he was growing more no. ofcrops on Jhum and rice on wet land. After gettingexposed with trainings at ICAR Basar, he was

confident to take up the activity on his land withpossible integration. As his farm is away fromhome, he was not convinced to integrate livestockbecause of the unavailability of labour andpossibility of theft. Therefore, he kept the livestocklike pig and poultry on his home and crops on field.Manures were recycled to field after compostingat site. The cost of cultivation was Rs. 13,000/-before and Rs. 21000/- after imposing the activity.The cost includes construction of poultry and pigshed. Before integration his earning was about Rs.16,100/ annum/ha but after integration his earningsincreased to Rs. 39,000/annum/ha. The B: C was1.24 before and 1.86 after the activity. Byintegrating the livestock and by growing sequentialcrops he used his family labour throughout the year.Neighboring farmers were also convinced by seeingthe performance of Mr. Pugo and hopefully theywill also integrate the components in best possiblemanner.

Farmers Innovation

Water was collected from the spring sources,she placed stones to avoid the loss of water fromsources and made the channel to collect the waterfrom small spring sources and collected water wasdiverted to field by forming shallow ditches. Shehas distributed the water throughout the field bycovering almost all the components. Hence, she wasgetting the water throughout the year.

Impact of the activity

By seeing the performance of integration of thevarious components on unit area and by judicioususe of resources of farm more farmers areenthusiastic to take up the activity on theirrespective field. But the real impact yet to see.

Steps for sustainability

Group meetings and trainings were given tothe farmers and explained about theadvantages of integrated farming system.The farmers were trained on seedconservation of HYVs of different crops fornext season.Farmers were trained about preparation oflow cost feed for livestock and judicious useof resources available at site.Farmers were advised to grow the sequentialcrops on their land to harvest additionalcrops.They were also advocated to follow the soiland water conservation measures on theirland wherever possible. It was advised toinclude leguminous crops at least once in twoyear for maintaining soil fertility.Suggested to utilize the free flowing waterfrom nearby area by growing sequential highvalue crops (vegetables) and also forlivestock unit.

Introduction

Daporijo district is one of the mostdisadvantageous areas in Arunachal Pradesh. Thefarmers here do not have much of livelihood optionsother than the agriculture, but the productivity ofmost of the crops is lower than the state and nationalaverage. There are three different land forms thoseare jhum, wet land and terrace land. Out of thesemost of the farmers go for jhum cultivation andthey grow the crops as per their householdrequirements by selecting traditional local varieties.The uses of foreign varieties (HYVs and hybrids)are considerably low in this area. Therefore, the

jhum area is targeted due to the importance of thisas the way of life for them. Mr. Tapuk Digbak isone of the jhum growers who hardly take cropsduring rainy season without following any rowproportion and topo sequencing. Therefore, soil andwater erosion and productivity was low in his jhumarea. Keeping all these problems in mind Jhumimprovement activity was initiated in his jhum land(Fig 1).

Methodology

Daporijo, Arunachal Pradesh was selected. Thefamily size of Mr. Digbak was five and land holdingwas 2.55 ha. Out of his land 2.05 ha is jhum landand 0.50 ha is wet land. The jhum land was targetedfor developing sustainable land use model underNAIP-3. Improved varieties of cereals, pulses,oilseeds and vegetables were included in the systemwith appropriate soil and water conservationmeasures such as mulching, contour planting, covercropping etc.

The residues of crops and weeds were used formulching. Across the slope planting was advocatedinstead of along the slope as practiced by thefarmers. The top hill portion was kept under intactforest for enhancing water infiltration to rechargewater level in down hills. In-situ nutrientmanagement in jhum by composting weed biomassand field waste on farm pit and recycled to cropplant

Results

Before intervention of ICAR, the farmers wasusing almost 88% local seeds, whereas, afterintervention it reduced to 30% only (Fig 4).

Another farmer Mrs. Yapu Riddi is a farmer ofRiddi village. Before implementing the activity onhere Jhum land she was earning only Rs 17,400/-annum and she was keeping her land fallow after

harvesting of rainy season crop. She was doingnothing after the crop harvest. But once after theintervention the activity on Jhum land improvedher earning about (Rs.67787/annum) with B: C ratioof 2.42, was engaged in farm activity for about39.9% more (263 man-days/annum from 188 man-days/annum). Her personal experience is that duringfallow period land was infested by weeds but bygrowing sequential crops weed population wasreduced with additional crop and the yield of rainyseason crops also increase because of improvement

of soil health. The land use was increased about82.2% (300 days). Other farmers should fallow theimproved practice and earn even more than the Mrs.Yapu Riddi, there are great possibilities to use thenatural resources in judicious manner.

Steps for sustainability

Group meetings were conducted andconvinced the farmers about the advantagesof the improved Jhum cultivation includingbeneficiary.Adequate trainings were conducted to buildtheir confidence and demonstrated thetechnologies in research farm and field ofprogressive farmers.The farmers were trained on seedconservation of HYVs of different crops fornext season.Farmers were advised to grow the sequentialcrops on their Jhum land to harvest somemore crops and also suggested to selectleguminous crops with high vegetativegrowth, so that fertility of Jhum siteimproved along with reduction in weedgrowth and proper soil and moistureconservation.

Introduction

Utilization of land effectively by growingassorted vegetables all through the year willincrease the farm income and sustain the soil health.Unevenly distributed and heavy rainfall in the Lenyiand Digbak villages of Upper Subansiri hinderingthe farmers to take sequential crop after rice.Farmers normally cultivate rice as mono crop insingle season and keep the land fallow rest of theyear. The rice grown will be sufficient only to thefarmers need. As the population in majority is thenon-vegetarian grows vegetable in the backyard tomeet the home need. They never realized the factthat huge amount of vegetables are coming tomarket from other nearby states like Assam,Meghalaya & other districts of Arunachal Pradesh.

Rationale

Low cost polyhouse technology will increasethe farm income by growing vegetables round theyear. The microclimate can be manipulated bycovering the crops with polyethylene. This shelterprovides opportunity to schedule the productionprogramme as per grower need.

Objectives

1. To demonstrate the poly house technologyFOR raising vegetables throughout the year.

2. Demonstrating the scientific cultivationpractices for various vegetables to generateyear round income.

Methodology

The Project was sanctioned during Feb 2009.Thereafter series of exposure visits, trainings wereconducted to interested farmers to sensitize themabout the technology and created awareness aboutthe easy avenue of income generation during offseason. One to one contact and group meetings wereorganized in their villages and home to make themfriendly with the project. The technology was thengiven to chosen farmers. others the nuances of this simple technology.Likewise, after seeing success, two other low costpolyhouse were constructed in the farmer’s field(Mr. Potam Digbak & Mr. Yapa Digbak) of theproject site.

Results

Due to adoption of low cot poly housecultivation, farmer is getting year round income.The productivity of crops also enhancedsubstantially. The net income from a single polyhouse (100 m2) was Rs. 11,125 in a single yearcompared to hardly about 750 from open cultivation(Table 1).

Discussion

Year round production of vegetables underpolyhouse is the great and simple technology in

the high rainfall zone areas where growing secondcrop in the open field is very difficult. However, asthe farmers are mostly poor, subsidies may be givento the farmers who are interested in adoption ofthis technology. As polyhouse is the costly business,growing crops under huge area is pre-requisite toget the yield advantage all through the year andmaking profit. Impact is very positive andoverwhelming. Many farmers are coming forwardto adopt this technology.

Sustainability

Policy interventions, creating markets, easyavailability of all the critical inputs are essential tosustain this technology in the long run.

Introduction

Cultivation of high value crops under protectedcondition is recognized as a useful tool to augmentthe productivity. Low cost polyhouse cum rainshelter has the potential to promote production ofhigh value crops like tomato and capsicum. Highrainfall prevailing in the project site of UpperSubansiri district has the potential for adoption ofthe low cost polyhouse technology.

Rationale

Low cost polyhouse technology has immensescope to promote production of high value lowvolume vegetables like tomato, capsicum, andcucumber etc. along with multiplication of qualityplanting materials of fruits, vegetables and flowers.

Objectives

1. To create awareness about low costpolyhouse technology among the farmers andrural youths.

2. To demonstrate the technology for raisingof vegetable seedlings and cultivation of highvalue crops like tomato, capsicum, cucumberetc.

Methodology

After sanctioning the project in January, 2009,a meeting was conducted among the farmers of theproject site and they were made aware about thelow cost polyhouse technology thorough trainingand exposure visit. Few farmers came forward toadopt the technology. Accordingly procurement ofcritical inputs like polythene, vegetable seeds weredone. One training programme on “Constructionand utilization of low cost polyhouse” wasconducted (Fig 1) for the beneficiaries and otherfarmers and rural youths for general awarenessduring the construction of one polyhouse in thefarmers’ field. Likewise two other low cost

polyhouse were constructed in the farmers field ofthe project site. Critical inputs like polythene andother construction materials, vegetable seeds etc.were given to the beneficiaries free of cost fromthe project. Mrs.Yapu Doyom from Linnye villageshad been provided one polyhouse from which sheis getting some subsidiary income by growingtomato and capsicum. The polyhouses have beenutilized for cultivation of tomato, capsicum,cucumber, frenchbean, chilli and for rising oforange seedlings.

Results

Mrs. Yella Reddi of Lida village, UpperSubansiri district, Arunachal Pradesh used to followthe mono cropping of rice from her childhood. Sheused to leave the land fallow and didn’t know theway to increase her farm income. ICAR AP Centre,Basar has given her number of training on nurserymanagement of vegetables, off season productionof vegetables under polyhouse and scientificvegetable cultivation of vegetables. She has grownvegetables and raise nursery in the backyard of herhouse which is not utilized in the past for anypurpose. We advised her to raise the nursery underpolyhouse and transplanted the vegetables into mainfield at right time. All the scientific cultivationpractices were followed under the supervision of

our dedicated team. After seeingthe profit and daily incomethrough vegetables, she allottedpart of her farm land only forproduction of vegetables allthrough the year. She being theASM and has much influenceto her society is nowdisseminating the importance ofgrowing vegetables to otherfarmers and asking them toadopt vegetable cultivation forsustainable farming. Thefollowing Table 1 shows theeconomics of vegetablecultivation in polyhouse.

Discussion

Vegetable crops are occupying an importantplace in diversification of agriculture, playing apivotal role in food and nutritional security,livelihood security besides environmentalprotection in NE Region. Use of improved hybrids/varieties and adoption of improved packages underprotected condition has potential to increase theyield by 3-5 times.

Impact

Low cost polyhouse technology is a newintervention in the project site. It has significantimpact by increasing the productivity and off seasonavailability of the produces and improved seeds ofvegetable.

Introduction

For a balanced diet, an adult should have anintake of 85 g of fruits and 300 g of vegetables perday as per the dietary recommendation of nutritionspecialists. But the present level of production ofvegetables in our country can permit a per capitaconsumption of only 140 g of vegetables per day.One should consume 40% leafy vegetables, 30%root vegetables and 30% other vegetables. Balancednutritional is incomplete without vegetables asthese are the major and the only source of nutritionalvitamins and minerals required by human bodybesides being rich source of carbohydrates andprotein. Vegetables are the source to increase notonly the family income but also nutritive values offoods and its palatability. So production ofvegetables in backyards using the available freshwater as well as the kitchen and bathroomwastewater. This will not only facilitate theutilization of unused water which otherwise willbe hazardous to our health through environmentalpollution, but can be useful for successfulproduction of vegetables. Since kitchen gardeningis done in a small area, it facilitates the methods ofcontrolling pests and diseases through the removalof affected parts and non-use of chemicals.

Two crops of paddy in a year, rearing live stockand growing vegetable on marginal scale is the mainsource of income in the selected clusters ofBalaram and Maracherra. Before the interventionof nutritional kitchen garden people of these twoclusters used to cultivate very few types ofvegetable with little care which could hardly meettheir family requirements. The practice of sowingvegetables was not a continuous process. But withthis intervention they are growing at least five toseven types of vegetables round the year. They arenow able to produce surplus quantity of vegetablesand fruits.

Rationale

There is an ample scope for sustainability ofthe programme in the selected clusters as farmersare not utilizing the available land in their back yardround the year. More over vegetable production ofBalaram and Maracherra are not sufficient to meetthe requirement of local markets. The woman andchildren would get fresh including ready to eatvegetables in their door step and hence, dependenceon market would reduce. This in turn wouldempower woman and children in project area ofDhalai.

Objectives

1. To ensure dual benefits of food and incomegeneration.

2. Continuous supply of , all the year round.3. Kitchen garden is a good source to meet the

nutritive demand of family members.4. Kitchen gardens also provide fodder for

household animals.

kitchen garden near their residence for ensuringproper attention. The garden must receive adequatesunlight. The backyard of the house was selectedfor nutritional kitchen garden as it is convenient asthe members of the family can give a constant careto the vegetables during leisure and the wastewaterfrom the bathrooms and kitchen can easily bediverted to the vegetable beds. Well rotten farmyard manure or compost was applied as it is a richsource of nutrients. Need based little supplementof fertilizer was given for crops like maize, bhindietc. Composting was encouraged in the corner ofhome garden for nutrient supplementation of crops.

Results

The average area per farmer before NAIPintervention was only about 200 m2 which rose toabout 500 m2 per farmer with ICAR intervention.Farmers were earlier growing only few crops likepumpkin, lablab bean, chilli etc. whereas, afterintervention, they started growing multiplevegetable crops including leafy vegetables andready to eat vegetables like cucumber. Farmers wereproducing only about 85 kg vegetable beforeintervention with no marketable surplus, whereasthey were harvesting about 425 kg vegetable fromtheir kitchen garden after NAIP intervention (Table1). The farmers could sale about 50% of theirproduce (200 kg) after scientific kitchen gardeningeven after meeting their own consumption. Thisincome is expected to be with woman as woman

and children mostly looked after the kitchengardening leaving the man for field works, dailylabour etc.

Each farmer has gained a net income of Rs.4,575 from an area of 500 m2 from their produce.People have learnt to utilize the available unusedplots in their backyard through year round vegetable

cultivation (Fig.2). At the same time they got theopportunity to generate some extra income forimprovement of their livelihood. Due to availabilityof fresh vegetables/fruits in doorsteps, the vegetableconsumption of farmers especially the women andchildren increased which resulted into betternutrition and health of the people.

Introduction

The farmers in the selected cluster viz. Balaramand Maracherra of Dhalai district of Tripura aremainly dependent on agriculture as their source oflivelihood. In those areas, paddy is the main staplecrop which is cultivated twice in a year. Besides,some vegetable crops are also grown which is notenough for their need and to meet the demand ofthe local markets. The main hurdle for the area isthe scarcity of irrigation water leading to lowcropping intensity. Therefore to improve thelivelihood of the community certain additionalsource of income is most important. Mushroomcultivation is such a practice which can significantlyserve the purpose. Through mushroom cultivation,people can easily generate some decent amount ofextra income with least investment.

Rationale

As the selected clusters are rice growing areas,producing sufficient amount of paddy straw andits remnants that kept as wastes in fields, as well asthe inhabitants are mushroom eater, hence there isample scope to flourish the mushroom cultivationtechnologies amongst the farmers.

Objectives

To improve livelihood of poor farmers bymushroom cultivation and to produce protein richfood like mushroom for their nourishment.

Methodology

Mushroom cultivation is a new practice in theareas of Balaram and Maracherra villages. At initialstage, the mushroom cultivation was introduced bygiving training and demonstration to popularize thisventure. The spawn and other requisite materialswere either supplied from ICAR or by purchasingfrom the Government laboratories. Then the farmerscultivated oyster mushroom on intact straw with

steam disinfection method. They were kept underclose supervision by the ICAR personal in givingnecessary directions and other inputs from time totime to combat diseases, pests and adverse climaticconditions. In this way considerable number offarmers learned the cultivation techniques andproduced mushroom for the first time in theirhouses. Several steps were taken towardscommercialization of the venture. In doing so, theinterested farmers, who were able to producemushroom, were selected for the construction ofmushroom units. The low cost mushroom shedswere prepared in the houses of the progressivefarmers (Fig. 1). The farmers earned profit fromselling of fresh mushroom @ Rs.80/- per kg in thelocal markets. Now the process of mushroomcultivation is a regular practice at Balaram andMaracherra. Total nine (9) units have beenestablished and nine (9) more units are about tocomplete.

ResultsIn all 216 farmers cultivated mushroom during

the period starting from June, 2008 to December,2010 (Table 1). They produced 2062 kg of fresh

oyster mushroom. Total expenditure was calculatedas Rs. 46,492 @ Rs. 12 for a poly bag filling. Thefarmers sold their produce @ Rs. 80 per kg freshmushroom to the local markets and earned Rs.1,65,045, which resulted Rs. 1,18,509 as net profit(Table 2).

Discussion

A number of framers have learnt a newtechnique to enhance their income. Mushroomcultivation is a totally new technique for Balaramand Maracherra cluster. They learned the mushroom

Sustainability

Sustainability depends upon regularconstruction of new sheds in order to increasemushrooms production amongst interestedbeneficiaries, however continuous mushroomsspawns supply poses a challenge that cansufficiently manage through improved techniquesof spawn (seeds) production.

Introduction

The tilla land of tripura is suitable for cultivationof tuber crops. Inclusion of tuber crops in farmingsystem would enhance the productivity per unit areabesides improving food security for small andmarginal farmers. Before intervention, the self helpgroup Abachanga had 0.48 ha of tilla land(moderate hillock upland) which was kept fallowwith full of weeds and shrubs (Fig 1). As the portionof the land was tilla and without any source ofirrigation, it was selected for cultivation of tubercrops viz Dioscorea, Elephant foot yam, Tapioca,Ginger, Sweet Potato etc. After clearing, the landwas divided into small plots of about 800m2 eachfor the individual tuber crops. Boundary of eachplot was planted with Banana Suckers. Thematerials were planted at 90cm ×90cm (Dioscorea,Elephant foot yam, Tapioca), 60cm ×20cm (sweetpotato) and ginger which was planted @ 1.5 ton/ha. One unit pig (2 piglets) was integrated forfattening by utilizing tapioca, sweet potato etc asfeed. Farmers provided kitchen waste, someconcentrate for better growth of pigs.

farmers in the selected villages of Dhalai District,because there was no such type of tuber cropscultivation. The farmers do not have any idea toutilize the fallow land. They would consume thetuber crops during the monsoon season while thefood availability used to be less due to continuousrain and also during working in Jhum land aftercollecting from adjacent jungle. As per their conceptit is very highly energetic and durable items. Theywere using tapioca (Kathaloo) as fencing materials.The tuber crops were also used as pig feed.

ResultsThe productivity of discorea, elephant foot yam,

tapioca, ginger and sweet potato was 5.63t/ha, 3.75t/ha, 1.9 t/ha, 2 t/ha and 4.25 t/ha, respectively (Fig.2 & 3). Farmers could earn a net income of Rs.20950 from 0.48 ha area area with a B:C of 2.15(Table 1 ).

ImpactThe net income from crop component was

14,150 and that of from pig was Rs. 6,200, thereby,giving a total net income of Rs. 20,950 in a singleyear from a piece of 0.48 ha land area. There waseffective utilization of land and various wastematerials for maintaining soil health. Steps havebeen initiated to replicate the model in other areasfor horizontal spread.

Introduction

Rice and fish are the major food items for thepeople of Tripura. Vegetables are grown in uplandand kitchen gardens. However, the productivity offish in most cases are very low (600 kg/ha) due tonon adoption of scientific approach. The ponds aremostly underutilized and farmers can hardly meettheir daily needs. There is ample scope forenhancing fish and crop productivity byscientifically integrating them. Keeping this in mindthe present success intervention “Evaluation andvalidation of indigenous and improved fish basedfarming system models for enhancing productionin agro-ecosystem of disadvantageous areas ofDhalai district of Tripura” were implemented forsustainability, profitability and competitiveness.

Rationale

Integration of fish farming with rice, vegetablesand fruits would result efficient utilization andrecycling of farmers available resources. At anypoint of time, one or other component would giveincome and there will be year round employmentdue to diversified activities. During drought, thewater from farm pond can be used for life savingirrigation of vegetables.

Objectives

1. To utilize the traditional paddy cum fishculture system for enhancement ofproductivity and profitability.

2. To improve the livelihood of poor/ marginalfarmers through location specific sustainablescientific intervention.

3. To impart the knowledge about the bestutilization of land through business moduleof fish based farming system options.

Fish-Rice-Vegetable-Fruit Based Farming System in Dhalai,Tripura

Methodology

The present technology intervention is a locationspecific scientific modification of traditional paddy-cum-fish culture which gives low fish productionand one crop of paddy only. In the traditional fishfarming system they only practiced the fish culturein an unscientific way. They did not maintain propermethodology of fish farming. The adjacent plainland near the fish pond was used for rice cultureonly. No vegetable and fruit farming was practicedby them. A scientific layout of the available landhas been planned in such a way that farmer cangrow fish, rice, vegetable and fruits simultaneously.For fish culture we have renovated channels andmain reservoir and also made use of waterthroughout the season for rice, fruit or vegetablefarming on the adjacent land.

To perform such activities various trainingprogramme were organized on location specific fishbased farming system modules and also provideddifferent input such as quality fish seed, balancedfish feed, lime, vegetable seeds and differentplanting materials etc. The stocking ratio of fishspecies was maintained as 5 species @ catla (3):silver carp (1): rohu (3): mrigal/ prawn (1.5):common/ amur carp (1.5). Initial stocking densitywas @ 12,000 nos. /ha and periodical stocking @8,000 nos./ha. Rice (Gumoti variety) farming waspracticed on plain land of that system. Thevegetable cultivation (bottle guard, potato, ridgegourd, string bean, local bean) was done on pondembankment as well as adjacent plain land whereasthe fruit crops like banana and papaya were plantedon pond embankment.

In the traditional paddy-cum-fish culture theproduction of fish is only 600- 800 kg/ ha but inIFS system fish productivity of 1,250 kg/ ha offishes. Sri Surjasen Satnami of Maracherra earneda net income of Rs. 27,700 from his IFS modelinvolving fish-rice-vegetable and fruit farming froman area of 0.36 ha in a single year (Table 1).

Technology Intervention

The fish-vegetable-fruit farming intervention isa location specific scientific modification oftraditional fish culture which gives low fishproduction for the farmers. In the traditional fishfarming system they only practice the fish culturein an unscientific way. They did not follow propermethodology of fish farming. The adjacent landnear the fish pond remains fallow and unutilizedfor year after year. No vegetable and fruit farmingwas practiced by them along with fish culture inthe adjacent plain land and in the pond dyke. Hence,technology for proper utilization of land as well aswater in an integrated with fish-vegetable-fruitfarming was introduced. A scientific layout of theavailable land has been planned in such a way thatfarmer can grow fish, vegetable and fruitssimultaneously. The farm pond was renovatedwhich can retain water throughout the year for fishculture and also utilize for fruit or vegetable farmingon the adjacent land and pond dyke to minimizesoil erosion.

Introduction

The main source of income of the farmers fromagriculture is from rice cultivation. They werepracticing fish culture but not in a scientific wayand hardly any integration of the fish culture withthe crop and animal component, which can give abetter profit for the farmers and improve theirlivelihood. Therefore, it is very important tointegrate the fish culture activity along with thedifferent crop (fruit and vegetable) and livestock(pig) according to specific area, location andtopography.

Before intervention the productivity from fishculture was hardly 0.3 to 0.6 t/ha. The income fromvegetable and fruits were also minimum. Farmershardly thought to integrate pig farming with fishculture.

Rationale

The Dhalai district of Tripura possesses vastpotential for the development of fisheries,agriculture and animal husbandry. The farmers canimprove the productivity of fish as well as the fruitsand vegetables depending upon the specific areaand location. Despite high demand of fish,vegetable, fruit and meat in the local market, thefarmers are not able to meet the demand. Hence

through this programme, there is a good scope todevelop fish based farming system with integrationof different crop (vegetable and fruits) and livestock(pig) components to increase the livelihood of thelocal poor.

Objectives

Evaluation and validation of indigenous andimproved fish based farming system models forenhancing production in agro-ecosystem ofdisadvantageous areas of Dhalai district of Tripurafor sustainability, profitability and competitiveness.

Methodology

Organization of various training programme onfish based farming system, supply of input of qualityfish seed, fish feed and lime. Monitoring of fishpond and its water quality. Preparation of pig shedand distribution of piglets etc.

Results

The average income per farmer ranged from25,572 to 83800 compared to 9500 per farmerbefore intervention. The significant findings/resultsof the technology demonstration are furnished intable 1.

Discussion

The farmer’s economic status enhancedsubstantially by adopting the fish based farmingsystem. The benefit cost ratio before interventionwas recorded at 1.57, whereas it was raised upto2.71 during the year 2010-2011 after intervention.From the pig rearing practices the farmers receivedRs. 10,000 to Rs. 14,000 during the year 2010-2011.Mr. Uttam Debnath deposited an amount of Rs.20,000 in LIC annually from the income of fishbased farming system. They are able to maintaintheir farm by themselves without any financial helpfrom the 2nd year.

Impact

The farmers are going to enhance their economicstatus by adopting the fish based farming system.Out of nine interventions Fish-fruit-vegetable-pigfarming was found as more effective as comparedto others. The productivity of fish per ha increasedto 2.7 to 3.1 t/ha after intervention as compared tothe initial status of 0.3 to 0.6 t/ha. The people havelearned about the scientific integration of fish,vegetable, fruits and pigs for better economicdevelopment. They have learned about theintegrated farming system and management inproper ways. The other farmers are now very muchinterested to follow fish based farming system afterreleasing the potential economic benefit of fishbased farming system.

The fish farmers will be benefited from theprogramme in a different way. The productivity offish and crops can be increased according to thespecific area and location. Fish fingerlings can beproduced from the spawn that were reared in smallditches. There is a good demand of fish, vegetable,fruit and meat in the local market. Therefore, thereis a good scope to develop fish based farmingsystem with integration of different crop (vegetableand fruits) and livestock (pig) components withspawn rearing and composite fish culture activitiesto improve the livelihood of the local poor.

Objectives

For improving and renovating the existing pondbased system training programmes on fish based

Results

The average net return of the farmer was Rs.10,061 and Rs. 17,800 during 2008-09 and 2009-10, respectively. The significant findings/results ofthe technology/product are furnished in table 1.

Discussion

The farmers economic status is enhanced byadopting the fish based farming system (Fig 2). TheB: C ratio was recorded as 1.66 before interventionwhereas, after intervention i.e. in the year 2008-09and 2009-10 the benefit cost ratio was recorded as

Introduction

Balaram and Maracherra cluster of the DhalaiDistrict of Tripura are rich in water resources,however there is limited availability of quality fishand the farmers have to collect the fish seeds fromthe locally available water bodies or they have todepend on the local traders for the fish seeds forstocking their ponds. Therefore, it is very importantto develop a fish breeding unit so as to ensure theavailability of quality fish seed for stocking theponds. In this context proper training anddemonstration on fish breeding and spawn rearingis required. Inclusion of fruits like banana wouldfurther enhance farmers income and providesustainability to the farming system.

Before intervention no income was recordedfrom fish spawn rearing. The only source of incomewas from agriculture (mainly from rice) andtraditional method of production of fishes wasfollowed.

Rationale

The fish farmers will be benefited from theprogramme in a different way. Under thisprogramme the farmers can produce quality fishseed at their own farm. For the farmers who havedifficulty in producing fish spawn in their farm,they can procure the fish spawn from the localfarmers and rear in their farm upto fingerlings stageand they can be sold again locally. By this way theeconomic status of farmers could be enhanced andthis would also ensure the availability of spawn aswell as fingerlings for scientific fish culturepractices.

Objectives

Addressing the constraints of deliverables tofacilitate the community/people to harness optimumbenefit from fishery and agriculture sector.

Organized training and undertakendemonstration programme on fish breeding andspawn rearing by utilizing small ditches for spawnrearing for the farmers. Manuring, liming, nettingand other cultural practices were followed asrecommended.

Results

Sri Baburam Satnami of Maracherra cluster hasundergone training during 10-12th July, 2008 atCollege of Fisheries. During the trainingprogramme he learnt about the breeding techniqueof fishes and subsequently he has started theproduction of fish seed at his own pond and hasearned Rs.17, 550 by selling the fish seed duringthe year 2008-09 and Rs. 13,000/- during the year2009-10. The average net income from a 2000 m2

pond area was Rs. 21,850/annum and farmersincome enhanced by 173% over traditional practice(Table 1).

taking the breeding training organized by Collegeof Fisheries, Tripura. He has earned a good amountby selling fingerlings during the year 2008-09 and2009-10 where no income was recorded earlierfrom such activities. He is able to develop nurseryand rearing activities in his own pond. At the sametime, he is earning a good income from banana (Fig1 ).

Impact

After intervention of fish breeding and spawnrearing practice the participant has increased his

income by selling the fingerlings and due to thisreason the local farmers got quality fish seed. Theother farmers were also interested to learn the newtechnology of fish breeding and rearing. A numberof farmers have participated in such trainingprogramme and learnt about the techniques of fishbreeding. Some of the farmers from both theclusters have started spawn rearing during the year2010-11 and their income was enhanced. Now, thetrend of spawn rearing has started in such localitiesfrom which they have increased their economiclevel by cultivating and selling the quality fish seed.

The breeding and spawn rearing technique istotally a new intervention for this region. Peoplethought earlier that fish culture in a pond is possibleeasily without any scientific knowledge. But nowthey have come to know there are so manyinteresting and profitable processes to be learnedwhich in turn could enhanced their income.

Introduction

The tilla lands (small hillocks with gentle slope)in the selected clusters (Balaram and Maracherra)of Dhalai district of Tripura are suitable forcultivating agricultural as well as horticultural cropshowever it is left fallow by the farmers nad the landgenerally remains infested with weeds andunproductive shrubs. Hardly a few farmers areusing their tilla land for cultivation of tuber crops,banana, assam lemon, pineapple etc. and even ifsome farmers are cultivating they are mostlygrowing local varieties. They are not aware of thehigh yielding varieties that are available in themarket, hence the productivity of crops is very lowand the income derived is minimal.

Fish culture is also a common practice amongthe farmers of Dhalai District of Tripura where theywould culture fishes in small size ponds of 400-500 m2, but most of the ponds are constructed inplain areas mostly near paddy fields. But fishculture is not practiced near theses tilla lands maybe due to scarcity of water or the water source isnot available. However, there isample scope for integrating cropswith aquaculture and animalhusbandry in these tilla lands byconserving rain water duringmonsoon season and using it forirrigating crops and for fish culture.

Objectives

1. Transformation ofunproductive or lowproductive tilla land toproductive one.

2. To conserve the rain water infarm pond and utilize for fishculture and for irrigating agri-horticultural crops.

Materials and methods

Integrated farming system is a completely newconcept for the farmers in the selected clusters ofDhalai district, so steps were taken to createawareness and to promote integrated farmingsystem among the farmers.

Various training programmes were organizedon agri- and horticultural crops cultivation,animal husbandry and composite fish culture.High yielding varieties of agri and horti cropswere supplied to the farmers.Fish fingerlings of Indian Major Carps(IMCs) and exotic carps were distributed tothe farmers.Arecanut saplings were supplied for plantingalong the boundary of the land.Pig shed were constructed on the pond dykeand cross bred pigs were opted for rearing.

Results

The gross income of two farmers i.e. Mr.Ramendra Marak and Mr. Durga Marak was Rs.

400235 and Rs. 333625/- from 3 and 2.5 ha landarea respectively (Table 1 & 2). The two farmersare now happy with this IF and are able to get yearround income and employment.

Impact

Before Dhalai Zilla Parishad intervention ofAgri + Horti + Pig + Fish farmers are not using

their tilla land but after intervention they haverealised the benefits that they can derived from theirunused land by practicing integrated farmingsystem. Farmers are now self sufficient and theyare using the produce not only at house hold levelbut they are selling the surplus amount therebyenhancing their income and livelihood substantially.

Introduction

Turmeric is one of the important spice crops ofMizoram and the quality of turmeric of Northeastis very good due to its high curcumin content.However, the productivity of turmeric is very lowdue to poor management practices and lack of valueaddition. Besides post harvest losses, lack of propermarket are the issues of concern in Saiha district ofMizoram. Most of the farmers sale their produce(marketable surplus) immediately after harvesting.The agricultural produce is either sold in localmarket or the farmers have to take the pain totransport their produce to Saiha market which is45 km away from the selected villages viz. EastKalcho and Maubawk. Regarding the post harvestactivities, the farmers adopted drying, cleaning andgrading only. They were not involved in othertechnology like value addition. Some farmers havereported low receipt of price due to the qualitydeterioration affected by insect and pest attack.Farmers from time to time have expressed the needof warehousing and cold storage facilities fromgovernment so that they can store their high valuecommodities for a longer period of time.

Hence, it is felt that improved technology ofagricultural practices would help the farmers toincrease the production of their crop followed bypost harvest activities (turmeric powder) such asvalue addition of their produce would fetch them ahigher price thereby improving their livelihood.

Methodology

In the selected cluster of Saiha district, 148 noof farmers of the two villages viz. East Kalcho andMaubawk were selected for cultivating turmericcovering an area of 70 ha with an average of 0.5ha/house hold (HH). High yielding variety ofturmeric (Lakadong) was cultivated organically

under rain fed conditions (Fig.1). For nutrientmanagement, FYM @ 15 t/ha was applied andorganic mulching (green leaves, subabul leaves,weeds etc @ 10 tonnes/ha, paddy straw @ 2 tonnes/ha) was practiced for soil and moistureconservation.

Disease free whole rhizome pre-treated withDM-45 (for 30 min) were grown in the month ofApril to May by dibbling method. About 2 t/ha ofthe rhizomes are used for planting at a spacing of30 cm between rows and 20 cm between plants.The crop is raised under rain-fed condition. 2-3hand weeding are carried out. The crop is raisedeither as sole crop or as mixed cropping with maize,common bean, or along with Jatropha, mango andpineapple.

Results

The crops are harvested within 8-9 months timeduring January - February by digging using a spade.The average yield under sole crop is about 10.5 t/ha (without mulches) and under mixed cropping12.5 t/ha (approx.) and with mulches about 13.7 t/ha.

Value Addition/Processing cost of Turmeric

One kg of freshly harvested turmeric after curingand drying gives about to 230g, which afterprocessing it comes to nearly 200 g in powderedform.

10% of the total benefit gets deposited in therevolving fund/sustainability fund i.e Rs. 20360

90% of the profit is equally distributed amongthe 148 HHs which comes to Rs 12390/year. Thenet income generation from raw turmeric from 0.5ha land holding to each HH: Rs 9800

The net income generation from the processedturmeric to each household Rs. 12,390.

Achievements

Before installation of the processing unit, theturmeric growers in the project site had not beenharvesting the crops regularly owing to low marketdemand for the raw turmeric product, however, nowthe scenario is quite change.

Processing of turmeric provides 36.63%more income than selling of the rawmaterials.Use of organic mulches and intercroppingwith maize and other crops provides 30-35%more yield than the traditional practice ofsole crop.

Management

The processing unit is managed by the Apexbody, M/s Paradise Valley DevelopmentCommittee, East Kalcho, Saiha district (Mizoram).The Secretary, Mr. Z. Chhapai is the overall I/c for

coordinating between the farmers groups onprocessing of turmeric at the project site.

Constraints

Although, the processing unit has started with agood beginning, the farmers have shown moreenthusiasm in taking up turmeric cultivation at abigger scale, frequent failure of power supply tothe village is a major constraint in the sustainabilityof the project.

Introduction

Theiva village is resource poor village of Saihadistrict at Mizoram state. Most of the villagers ofTheiva depends upon the Jhuming (Fig 1). Adoptionof new technologies is negligible due to lack ofknowledge regarding the resource management inand out of field. Annual crops like maize, uplandrice kharif vegetables etc were grown during thekharif season only. Animals mainly local breed ofpig are reared in 2-5 numbers and some local birdsare raised at the backyard. The village is under fooddeficit condition where 85 % of food grains werereceived through PDS or imported from other state.For animals protein villager use to go for huntingtill day. The average income of the farmer wereabout Rupees 25,000 per annum.

The soil of Theiva village is acidic with pHrangeing from 5-6, loamy-sand to sandy-loam intexture, rich in organic matter and total hilltopography. The intervention site lies at an altitudeof 320 m MSL to 1100 m MSL with slope angle of30 to 70°. Soil erosion is common due to highrainfall of about 2000-3000 mm per annum, out ofthis 80-90 percent of rainfall were received duringfive month of kharif season. In the later monthsonward soil become dry in the absence of rainfall.

The top soil moisture remains near to the permanentwilting point or less with visible cracks. Under thelivelihood improvement project of NAIP-III, on the“Introduction and Development of IntegratedFarming System Technology” Mr. N. Thulanga,resident of Theiva village, Siaha district ofMizoram, a typical farmer with an annual incomeof Rs 32000 from his two 0.8 hectare piece of land.The income received from cultivation of maize andrice were Rs 9000 and Rs 21000 from rearing oflocal pig (Burmese breed).

Methodology

For the sustainable growth of the farmers, theintervention should meet both long-term and short-term goal. The resource can be utilized when therelationship between components are symbiotic orcomplimentary type. So his land was partitionedinto annual crops 0.3ha (maize and rice), vegetablecrop 0.2 ha (okra, french beans cabbage, chinesemustard) fruits tree 0.4 ha (Banana: 700, Lemon:5, khasi mandarin 20, pineapple 200, mango: 25)forest tree 0.8 (teak) and intercropped with tubercrops (sweet potato, tapioca and colacasia). Theremaining land used for construction of waterstorage structure, piggery unit, poultry unit,vermicompost unit. To develop an integratedfarming system model, some investment on waterharvesting structure (Rs 45,000), shade house (Rs35,000,) pigsty(Rs 10,000), poultry house (Rs5,000) and planting of economically importantperennial tree or fruit tree were made. Terracingwas undertaken in an area of 4.5 ha fordemonstrating settled agriculture in the clustervillage. During first year soybean (variety JS 335)and rice bean were grown for fertility build up. Thecrop and weed residues were used for mulchingand manure. During the sbsequent year maize andrice was grown in the same plots were pulses weregrown.

ResultsMaize variety RCM 76 was given to the farmers

for cultivation in the terraced land. The RCM-76variety can be harvested at 90-95 DAS (doughstage) and accommodate more plant per unit areato produce higher yield. The famers fetch higherprice due to early availability of maize cobs inmarket beside their own consumption. After themaize crop farmer grow a second crop of soyabean(JS 335), during month of late July and August.Previously farmers were practicing mix croppingof maize with vegetable like pumpkin, chinesemustard etc. Out of the area, about 2600 numbersof cobs and 550 kg of rice were harvested. About2500 maize cobs were sold to market and rest wereconsumed at household level. All rice grain wasmilled and 300 kg of rice was kept for self-consumption. Bran weight about 250 kg used asfeed for poultry and pig. Soyabean production was350 kg grain, out of which 30 kg was preserved forseed purpose, 50 kg was utilized for familyconsumption and rest was used as feed for poultryand pig.

Vegetable crops were grown in an area of about1600 m2. Ginger, okra, pumpkin, cowpea, frenchbean, bird eye chili were cultivated in the field whilecoriander and tomato in low cost shade net weregrown during the kharif season. In the rabi seasonnursery of cole crop were raised in shade house forsell and remaining plant were subsequentlytransplanted in terraced land. Green corianderfetches higher and regular income than any othercrop under shade house. The coriander required 45-55 days to give economic yield, so five crops peryear were taken under shade house. The grossincome generated by the vegetable cultivation hasbeen Rs 32,000. The net income from the vegetablewas Rs 25,000 with benefit cost ratio of 1.79.

Improved breed of Hamshire cross (4 female: 1male) for fattening and dual purpose birds Vanarajabirds (25 No’s) were distributed to the farmer. TheVanaraja birds with similar management of localbird gained a body weight of 2.79±0.51kg femaleand 3.82±0.84kg male, while the local folk weighed1.25 ±0.46 kg female and 2.5±0.53 kg male after 6months. To boost the body weight in addition tolocal feed supplement mineral mixture, deworming,vaccination etc were advocated. Supplements feedfor vanaraja consisted of mainly broken rice, grassand some weeds, vegetable waste and kitchenwaste.

The Hamshire cross produced 30 to 40 per centmore body mass compared to local Burmese breedwhich could able to gain body mass of 75-80 kg.The Hamshire cross-recorded a body weight of129±5.8 kg under the IFS condition. The pig feedconsisted of cooked little rice, bran, tuber or leavesof plants, damage vegetable etc.

About 600 kg of vermi cast from vermicompostproduced within the system was utilized for thevegetable production mainly under shade house.An additional 1.0 ton of manure generated frompiggery and poultry unit, utilized for terraced landfruit crops. So fertility of the farm maintain by theutilization of local resources.

Due to all the above interventions, Mr. N.Thulanga could earn a net income of Rs 1,38,500(Table 1). The man-days were also increased from120 days to 305 days. The farmers of Theiva villagerealized the importance of cereals, horticulturecrops and animal component for higher productivityand income generation. With all this integration ofcomponent (Fig 2-5), income from the farming canbe improved for sustainable economic developmentof the backwards peoples of Saiha district.

Introduction

Rice is predominant crop (60%) andmonocropping of rice is a commonly systempracticed by the farmers in Tamenglong during thekharif season, keeping the remaining period of theyears as fallow resulting in low cropping intensityof about 110 % which is the major problem in thecluster villages viz. Noney, Reangkhong,Awangkhul and Tupul Charoi Chagotlong. Theproductivity of rice in Tameglong is very low dueto cultivation of local varieties and non adoptionof improved cultural practices. In some pockets thefarmers are cultivating mustard but the productivityis low due to poor agronomic practices, use of localvariety and meager fertilizer/manure application.By adopting zero tillage for toria, the farmers couldincrease the productivity of toria, reduced the costof cultivation thereby increasing the croppingintensity and earning an additional income forthemselves with less effort. Zero tillage also helpsin timely sowing of toria (October-November),conserve soil moisture and require less water, savestillage cost and the soil is protected from erosiondue to the retention of surface residues and reduceorganic matter depletion.

Objectives

1. To enhance rice and toria productivity byimproved cultural practice including varietalinterventions

2. To conserve natural resource and reduce thecost of cultivation

3. To intensify cropping intensity and enhancefarmers income

Methodology

The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region,Manipur Centre selected 21 to 235 ha rice farmers

with total area ranging from 5 to 63 ha. Similarly,43 nos., 56 nos., 40 nos. 165 nos. and 172 nos. offarmers were selected during 2007-08, 2008-09,2009-10 and 2010-11, respectively for training anddemonstration on zero tillage cultivation of toria(Variety M-27). High yielding variety RCManiphou 10 was demonstrated in farmers’ field(Fig. 1). Trainings were conducted on zero tillagecultivation of toria

A seed rate of 6-7 kg/ ha (sow the seeds aftersoaking 24 hours) and row to row spacing of6-8 inches were advocated to the farmers.To facilitate row planting of toria and use ofrow marker and other small implements,transplanting of rice with wider spacing (20x 20 cm) or SRI/ICM practice was suggested.Fertilizer dose of 80:60:40 NPK/ha + FYM5 t/ha was recommended for rice. Half doseof N is used (86.8 kg) and remaining half 2splits (43.4 kg each) doses at tillering andpanicle initiation stage was advocated.Fertilizers dose of 60:30:30 NPK/ha (Urea-130 kg, SSP-188 kg/ha and MOP-50 kg/ ha).Half dose urea as basal and remaining halfdose at 45 DAS was recommended.

Life saving Irrigation at 45 DAS and 60 DASwas advocated wherever possible for higherproductivity.For managing aphids Spray spray ofMonocrotophos (1 ml/lit water) at 10 daysinterval was recommended.When more than 75% of the pods matured,harvesting was undertaken during morninghours to avoid shattering losses.About 30 cm stubble height was retained inthe field for resource conservation andfertility enhancement.

50 bee hives were included in the toria fieldto generate additional income (Fig 2).

Results

Beneficiary farmers found that in the riversidefoothills the improved blast resistant variety RCManiphou-10 was superior to the local varieties notonly in yield attributes but also in qualityparameters. The productivity of RC Maniphou 10ranged from 3.5 t/ha during 2007-08 to 3.87 t/haduring 2010-11 compared to low averageproductivity of 2.2 t/ha of local variety(Moirangphou) Table 1. Zero tillage rapeseedmustard production technology (var.M-27) couldutilize the residual moisture to harvest a good crop(Fig 3).

The yield of toria was recorded at 0.64 t/ha, 0.73t/ha, 0.75 t/ha and 0.88 t/ha during 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 respectively. The farmers’number has also increased from 43 HH in the year2007-08 to 172 HH in the year 2011-12. Farmerscould earn a net income of Rs. 17, 500 with B: Cratio of 2.30 (Table 1 and Fig 4).

DiscussionDue to adoption of HYV and improved

agricultural practice, the rice productivity wasenhanced by 59 to 76 %. Farmers started savingtheir own seed for next season and recovering

higher price by selling seeds to other farmers. Zerotillage technique allows farmers to plant 15 daysearlier than usual. Since the cost of land preparationwas minimum, it also generates higher net income.This approach also reduced weed problems -because the soil is disturbed less under zero tillage,fewer weed seeds are exposed and fewer germinate.At present the area under zero tillage rapeseedmustard is being expanded rapidly. A total no of204 farmers have benefitted from zero tillage toriacultivation covering an area of 114.8 ha. Farmershave also started to extract the oil from mustard inthe oil expeller unit provided by ICAR-RC-NEH,Manipur Centre thereby enhancing their incomefrom zero tillage mustard cultivation (Fig 6). Seeingthe achievement by fellow farmers under zerotillage more numbers of farmers are showing theirwillingness to adopt this new technology of mustardcultivation.

Farmers earned an additional income of Rs. 600-700/- from the bee hives.

Steps for sustainability
