PETALING JAVA: Malaysiandiver Cheong Iun Hoong(pix)made history when shewon the' country's firstdiving gold medal on Wednesday inthe women's 10mplatform individualfinal at the World Aquatics.Championships in Budapest,Hungary - beating the moreillustrious Chinese divers in theprocess.. "My god, I'm a worldchampionl"Cheong said in disbelief after she'came in first with 397.5points.
"I hoped for a medal, but I didn'tthink 1 could beat' the Chinesedivers," she said of China's Si Yaji~,who took the silver with 396 points.
.Si was the silver medallist for theevent at the Rio Olympics last year.
Si's compatriot and reigningOlympic champion Ren Q!an, whowon silver in the event in 2015,tookthe bronze with 391.95points. .
Chinese divers have longdominated the event at the worldchampionships, winning 22medals,16more than any other country.
ThiS was the second time 28-year-old Cheong from Perak tasted victoryat the tournament, after shepartnered Pandelela Rinong to takethe bronze in the women's 10m
