NALMS Notes & Lake News A Publication of the North American Lake Management Society We’re just a few days away from the 38th International Symposium! NALMS and our local hosts, the Ohio Lake Management Society and the Indiana Lakes Management Society are looking forward to welcoming NALMS 2018 attendees to the banks of the Ohio River. The Ohio River, which forms the southern border of the state, was impounded to serve modern navigation; those impoundments now function like a series of lakes. Meanwhile, the body of water that forms the majority of the state’s northern border, Lake Erie, has been in the spotlight in recent years due to its severe algal blooms. Both will be explored as part of this year’s symposium along with many familiar topics (invasive species, algal toxins, shallow lakes) and some that you may not typically see at a NALMS symposium. Large data sets, ecological engineering, and molecular techniques for HABs are among the topics that are new or relatively new to the NALMS symposium. Also new this year, the Water Management Association of Ohio (WMAO), the parent organization of the Ohio Lake Management Society, will be holding their annual conference in conjunction with the NALMS symposium on Wednesday. NALMS and WMAO attendees will be able to attend sessions offered by either organization on that day. Our program kicks off on Tuesday with a full schedule of 9 workshops and 3 field trips. There’s still room in many of them and we encourage you to sign up for one, if you haven’t already. Space is limited, so please sign up soon. We look forward to seeing you in Cincinnati! 2018 Cincinnati Ohio NALMS Changes Coming to the Symposium Program To conserve resources, we will no longer be printing a full symposium program. You will still receive a program booklet upon your arrival in Cincinnati containing detailed schedules for each day of the symposium, but it will no longer contain, among other things, presentation abstracts. All of the information that had previously been included in the printed program is posted on the symposium website, including abstracts. Halloween in Cincinnati As you may have noticed, Halloween falls during the symposium week. To celebrate, we will be hosting a costume competition during the Exhibitors and Poster Reception on Wednesday evening. Prizes will be awarded for the best limnology-themed costumes. We’re just a few days away from the 38th International Symposium! NALMS and our local hosts, the Ohio Lake Management Society and the Indiana Lakes Management Society are looking forward to welcoming NALMS 2018 attendees to the banks of the Ohio River.

The Ohio River, which forms the southern border of the state, was impounded to serve modern navigation; those impoundments now function like a series

of lakes.

Working together for clean water

National Water QualityMonitoring Council

Save the Date! Please join us on March 25–29, 2019 in Denver, Colorado for the National Water Quality Monitoring Council’s (NWQMC) 11th National Monitoring Conference. This conference provides opportunities for water stakeholders – federal, state, tribal and local water professionals, non-profits, academia, and volunteer citizen scientists – to network, develop new skills and partnerships, and exchange information.

Registration information is coming soon. Visit the conference website for more details: acwi.gov/monitoring/conference/2019/.

Make a generous (and tax-deductible) donation.

Voice of the LakeNALMS has partnered with award-winning composer Margaret Brouwer to stage a free performance of her oratorio, Voice of the Lake, a musical description of Lake Erie, the good and the bad, in the first quarter of the 21st century. The performance will occur on Wednesday, October 31 at 8:00 pm and will be within walking distance of the conference venue, will be free and open to the public, and thus represents an unprecedented potential for outreach regarding NALMS’s mission.

We are approaching our $7,000 fundraising goal, but time is short and we still need your help! Gold ($1,000) and Silver ($500) sponsorship levels receive recognition and other cool perks, but no amount is too small and every donation is both valuable and sincerely appreciated. Donate today!

Donate an Item to the Silent AuctionNALMS’ Annual Silent Auction is still welcoming donations of items to auction off. If you have an item you would like to donate to the auction, please drop it off at the symposium registration desk by noon on Wednesday, October 31. The auction will end at 3:30 pm on Thursday, November 1 and all proceeds go to the Eberhardt Memorial Student Fund in support of NALMS’ student members including travel grants to attend next year’s symposium in Burlington.

NALMS New Member Welcome ReceptionIf you are a new member of NALMS since the last symposium we invite you to meet at 5:00 pm on Tuesday evening, October 30 in the Rue Reolon at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, located on the street level of the hotel’s corner entrance, for a chance to meet fellow new members as well as members of the NALMS Board and the symposium host committee.

Welcome to Cincinnati Social Event at Rhinegeist BreweryOur traditional welcome event will be held at the Rhinegeist Brewery in the historic Over-the-Rhine district on Tuesday, October 30.
