OVERALL REPORT

The December 2016 issue went to print on December 12 th. Kelley Newkirk Konarik was very helpful with the transition of 2nd VP’s and the learning curve. Thank you to everyone else who assisted also.

I am extremely excited to be in this new role and I have a passion to take the NALTA News magazine to a new level in 2017. I have already begun an advertising campaign, started soliciting for educational articles and have been researching several other publications for design ideas.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER

In the process of looking up potential design ideas for the magazine I met a graphic designer who asked if she could submit a proposal to design for our magazine. She has extensive expertise with magazine design, has top of the line advanced magazine design software and can match our current price ($50 per page) and turnaround time (two weeks). I am very impressed with Veronica’s designs and how clean and professional her work is. She also comes very highly recommended. I have included reviews of her work from past clients following her proposal.

Although our current designer, Ashlie Faber (Infinite Voyage Designs), is incredibly sweet and has been patient with all of our growing pains, she has admitted that she is still early in her graphic design career. We are not under any contract with Ashlie so at this time I would like to propose that we give Veronica with Vongue Art a test run with the March 2017 issue.

STOCK GRAPHICS/PHOTOGRAPHYIn the process of researching how to make the magazine look better I have learned that most other publications similar to ours pay for stock graphics and photography to add to the look of their magazine. The best option I have found for stock graphics and photography is:

They charge a fee of $80 per month for downloads that can be printed/copied and used at our discretion. I would like to ask for $240 in budget funds to use the stock photography website subscription for three months in 2017 (the months corresponding with each magazine issue). Here are some examples of the stock graphics and photography I found that I think would look nice for our magazine:

PRINTERNALTA has been considering switching to a new printer for quite some time. Although we are very thankful to Phillips 66 for printing our magazines, their services have limitations which have provided a few difficulties for us over the years.

I have found another printer who can provide the same services at nearly the same cost without the limitations. Printing Center USA has provided a quote which I have attached. I’ve also attached a spreadsheet so that you can see past costs and comparisons. You will notice that the price quoted is slightly more per magazine than what we have been paying. Printing Center USA indicated that they quoted on the higher end for postage since they did not have exact addresses. They also indicated that most likely the final price would be slightly lower than quoted. We can also save additional money using them by having smaller page print increments (as discussed more below).

Here are a few of the Pro’s to consider switching:

1) Short Production Time (7 days)2) Defined Production Time (Phillips66 can never give us a defined production time and it

greatly varies with each issue – sometimes over a month)3) 4 page print increments rather than 8 page (Saves us money per page as well as easier

to accommodate content in each issue)4) More reliable pricing (Phillips66 is unable to provide us a breakdown of exact costs for

quotes or finished jobs so we do not know what the cost will be until the issue has been mailed). Printing Center USA will give us a pre-approval quote for each issue.

5) No over-prints (Phillips66 often does over-prints of up to 100 magazines)

We are not under contract with Phillips 66 so at this time I would like to propose that we give Printing Center USA a try for our March 2017 issue.

CHAPTER REPORTS

1 to 2 pages in length is preferred. Please send your chapter report in Word only (not PDF). Preferred font is Times New Roman (12 Pt for Titles, 10 Pt for Body Text).

PICTURES

Please include a small image of yourself and a few pictures of your chapter. These can be anything from your chapter events during the year (Examples: Board Meetings, Seminar, Luncheons). Please do not imbed these into the chapter report document as the resolution is generally not high enough to publish. Separate JPEG attachments are preferable.

EDUCATIONAL ARTICLE

1 to 4 pages in length is preferred. Educational articles do not have to be an original article drafted just for NALTA’s purposes (potential authors can submit an already prepared article). If you are having trouble obtaining an educational article here are some suggestions:

1. Ask luncheon or seminar speakers throughout the year if they would be willing to submit something2. Ask managers or executives at your company if they would be willing to submit something
