1) Put on your goggles.

2) Obtain a test tube, an iron wire, and a marker. Write your initials on the test tube.

3) Fill up the test tube with water.

4) Record your observations in the space on the next page of the iron wire and the water BEFORE the

reaction.

5) Place the iron wire in the test tube of water. Return it to your instructor.

6) Retrieve your test tube during your next lab period and record your observations AFTER the reaction.

test tube of CuSO4 (aq)

Procedure:

1) Put on your goggles and a pair of disposable gloves.

2) Obtain a test tube of CuSO4 (aq), aluminum foil, and a marker. Write your initials on the test tube.

3) Record your observations in the space on the next page of the aluminum foil and CuSO4 (aq) BEFORE

the reaction.

4) Place the aluminum in the test tube of CuSO4 (aq).

5) Wait for one minute. If nothing happens, see your instructor. Then record your observations DURING

Procedure:

1) Put on your goggles, a lab apron, and a pair of disposable gloves.

2) Obtain a lighter.

3) Go to the fume hood. There will be a test tube of HCl (aq), magnesium metal, and an empty test tube.

4) Record your observations in the space on the next page of the magnesium metal and HCl (aq) BEFORE

the reaction for Reaction #4.

5) These next couple steps need to be performed in quick succession.

a. Using tweezers drop one piece of magnesium metal into a test tube of HCl (aq).

b. Hold an empty test tube over the test tube of HCl (aq) to collect any gases being formed.

6) While the magnesium and hydrochloric acid are reacting have your partner record his or her

observations DURING the reaction for Reaction #4. If you do not have a partner, remember what is

happening and record your observations later.

7) Hold the inverted test tube over the test tube of HCl (aq) and magnesium for 20 seconds or until the

magnesium has stopped reacting.

8) Take a rubber stopper and quickly seal the inverted test tube. Place it in the test tube rack.

9) Observe the contents of your stoppered test tube and record your observations BEFORE the reaction for

Reaction #5.

10) These next couple steps need to be performed in quick succession.

a. Ignite your lighter.

b. Take your stoppered test tube, invert it again, and remove the rubber stopper.

c. Quickly insert the flame into the test tube.

d. Record any observations you have DURING the reaction for Reaction #5.
