TEACHING AND GRADUATE STUDENT SUPERVISION Teaching philosophy My teaching philosophy is based on my desire to share the knowledge and experience that I have gained in my field “biomedical engineering” with students. I believe that my teaching philosophy is centred on four main ideologies: 1) student-centred learning; 2) assessment driven learning; 3) up-to-date student knowledge in the field; and 4) use of technology to support learning. Teaching activities

My major teaching activity at Khalifa University and University of Melbourne over the past 10 years has been the application of Electronics and Signal Processing principles to health, biomedicine and medical instrumentation. I have been energetic in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of curricula with specific focus on Graduate Attributes. Specifically, I have developed and coordinated six bioelectronics and biosignals units and contributed to teaching in nine units including associated laboratory practicals (Table1).

Research vision and major research areas

My scholarly vision is to engage in state-of-the-art research that advances our understanding of neurophysiological signals and associated applied problems in physiological control (cardiovascular and locomotion). To achieve my research goals I am searching for innovative solutions to both fundamental scientific problems and applications to clinical and community problems, such as sleep disordered breathing, cardiac autonomic neuropathy, fetal heart anomalies, major depressive disorders and falls prevention.

My research works center on the application of engineering and physical science principles to human biosignals. The primary aim of my work is to use signal analysis methods as diagnostic indicators of clinical problems by addressing two key issues: a) understanding the physiology of human cardiovascular and locomotor control and b) developing innovative physiological measurement techniques using signal processing, computational intelligence and low cost instrumentation technology.
