Adventure Challenge Badge

The Adventure Challenge is designed to broaden each Joey Scout's life experience in the wider world. This is achieved through participation in activities to places not normally visited by your Mob.

The Adventure theme runs in conjunction with the Aims, Principles and Educational Methods of Scouting. It provides an excellent theme for fun and active Mob programs.

Buddy Badge

Joey Scout Mobs can get together, share activities and have great fun. One Mob visits the other, who then returns the visit. Special activities are held when Mobs visit. Later, this could progress to sharing an outdoor activity, sleepover or Mob holiday. You can have a ‘virtual’ Mob buddy scheme by using the Internet.

The Mob who you Buddy with can be any Mob, inside or outside your District.

Environment Challenge Badge

As an integral part of its overall program the Scout Association aims to assist all its members to:

1. Develop an appreciation and respect for the natural environment.

2. Gain knowledge of Australian plants, animals and basic ecological principles (especially as they relate to conservation practises).

3. Develop a sense of responsibility in behaviour and action.

Environmental activities are directed at the Mob rather than the individual Joey Scout. The Project will take the form of four Challenges to be done by the Mob.

More Camping Questions

Can we bring “Bed Buddies / Sleeping Soft Toys” to camp?

Yes. We encourage Joeys to bring them along. The extra security may help them enjoy the camping experience a little more.

Does a parent need to come along?

Due to the level of supervision required, we need 1 adult for each Joey at camp. Please speak to your leader if this becomes a problem.

But we are afraid of the dark?

We can use a Glow stick in a tent or dormitory, at night these usually provide sufficient light to calm a concerned Joey. Advise your leader.

Are we in Tents or Dormitories?

Depends on the type of camp. Joey Mob Holidays are held in dormitories, while family camps may have either Tents, dormitories or a combination of both.

My Joey has an Allergy, Medical condition, Special Need?

Please make sure your leader is fully aware of this early in the piece. Sometimes activities can be manipulated to cater for your Joey. Camps can be a special time for kids with special needs, please discuss this with your leader.

Activity Forms are issued for all activities and these will advise of any special requirements.

Joeys to Cubs Planning Session

At 7.5 yrs of age it’s time to plan your Promise Challenge and your linking with cubs. Please discuss this with your Leader and set some dates below.

Note that depending on other events it can take up to 6 weeks from completing the Promise Challenge for processing and presentation of the badge, please factor this into your dates to ensure it can be awarded before linking to cubs.

Going up to cubs can be a daunting process for some Joeys and needs to be timed depending on the Joey’s maturity and preferably so that they can link together with other Joey’s at the same time.

The Promise Challenge

"In Scouting, a boy is encouraged to educate himself instead of being instructed.”

Sir Robert Baden-Powell

The aim of this challenge is to allow the older Joey Scouts to gain a greater understanding of the Promise and Law and to learn about our founder, Lord Baden-Powell (BP), and the history of Scouting.

This challenge will require the Joey Scout to complete certain elements away from the Mob meeting. We recommend that it be presented to the Mob in a display folder.

You must be 7 ½ before you start this Badge

The Promise Challenge Progress

We encourage parents to support their Joey in this project, but the results need to be the product of the Joey to the best of their ability. Please approach your leader for any assistance.

B-P/Scouting History

Joey Scouts have a choice as to ‘writing’ about or ‘telling’ us about the following information;

1. Who is B-P?Find out about five interesting things about B-P and either write down or tell your Mob.Some things you might like to ask about BP’s job, family, where he lived, what he did, what he was famous for, date of birth.

2. How many other sections in Scouting are there?3. Can you name the other sections?4. What is a Jamboree or Cuboree?

You might like to ask Cubs and Scouts for help.

Duty to God1. Why do we say a prayer at the Joey Scout

meeting?2. Write a prayer about what it means to ‘love my

God’ and share at your Mob meeting or at a Scout’s Own.

Duty to Self/Others

Think of a way you can help another person in your community/area where you live and discuss this with your parents and Leader.

9. Discuss the Pack visits with the Joey Scout Leader and Joey Mob.

How Did Cub Scouting Start?

Once there was a boy who loved to sleep out in a tent with his four brothers on weekends. They would climb trees; sail boats and they loved to play sports.

When this boy grew up he joined the Army and became a Major General. His name was Robert Baden-Powell.

He was a great hero in Africa, where he saved the town of Mafeking from an attack, which lasted 217 days. He had so few soldiers with him that he had to use boys to help with first aid, carry messages and do other jobs. He was pleased to see they could be relied on.

When Baden-Powell returned to England he found boys reading the book he had written to help Army Scouts. So he took some of them on a camp to Brownsea Island and wrote a book of their own called ‘Scouting for Boys’.

There were lots of boys who wanted to be Scouts, but they were too young. So Baden-Powell started a new section for them called Wolf Cubs – using ideas he got from ‘The Jungle Book’.

Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell died many years ago, but each year on his birthday (22 February), we remember how he started Scouting for millions of boys and girls in over 215 countries and territories around the world.

The Left Handshake

When you shake hands with another Scout, your Leaders, or any member of the Worldwide Scout Movement, you shake hands with your left hand.

In Africa, warriors once fought with spears, and carried shields in their left hand. If a warrior met a friend, however, he would not need his shield for protection, and would have his left hand free. So if a man held out his left hand it showed that he trusted you and wanted to be friendly.

Lord Baden-Powell met an African Chief who held out his left hand in greeting,

Page 24

Page 25: Name :______________________’s · Web viewHarmony Day celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promotes the ... you a parting word of ... to get happiness is

showing he wanted to be friendly. This impressed Baden-Powell and he chose this special handshake for Scouting.

The Jungle Story

It was a warm summer night when Tabaqui, the jackal – the mean, sly, mischief-maker – crept to the cave of Mother and Father Wolf. ‘Shere Kahn, the big one, has shifted his hunting grounds. He

will hunt among these hills,’ he told them.

Father Wolf was upset, because Shere Kahn, the tiger killed cattle and angered the villagers, bring trouble to the jungle. But as they listened, they heard the angry, snarly whine of the tiger. ‘He is hunting man!’ said Mother Wolf. ‘Listen, something is coming!’Father Wolf crouched then halted in mid-spring. ‘Man!’ he snapped, ‘a man cub. Look!’ His jaw closed gently over the little boy’s back and he carried him into the cave and placed

him amongst the other cubs. Then a dark shadow crossed the doorway.

‘The Man Cub is mine, give him to me!’ Shere Kahn’s roar filled the cave. But Mother Wolf and Father Wolf were not to be ordered around by someone not from the pack. So Shere Kahn slunk away. ‘I will call him Mowgli (The Frog)’, said Raksha, the Mother Wolf, ‘because his skin is smooth and without hair like a frog’s’.

So Mowgli stayed with Raksha and Father Wolf and their own four Cubs. When they were old enough to run a little, they set off on the night of the full moon, through the jungle to the Council Circle.

There the wolves looked over the young Cubs so that they would know them if they met in the jungle.

Then Shere Kahn roared from the trees, ‘What have the Free People to do with a Man Cub in the Pack?’

Akela, the Pack Leader, reminded the Wolves that if there was an argument about a Cub, two people would have to speak for him.

Page 25

Page 26: Name :______________________’s · Web viewHarmony Day celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promotes the ... you a parting word of ... to get happiness is

So Baloo, the brown bear, stood and said, ‘I will speak for the Man Cub’. Then a black shadow dropped from the trees. It was the mighty hunter, Bagheera, the panther. ‘I have a bull, newly killed, to pay for the Man Cub’s life’, he said. So Mowgli was allowed to stay.

He learned the Laws of the Jungle from old Baloo and how to creep and stalk and hunt from Bagheera. And so, he was accepted as a member of the Pack.

Your Joey Leaders would liketo thank you for being part of our mobWe wish you lots of fun as you continue

your adventures in Scouting.

Sir Robert Baden-Powell

World Chief ScoutSir Robert Baden-Powell1857 - 1941

Dear Scouts,

If you have ever seen the play Peter Pan you will remember how the pirate chief was always making his dying speech because he was afraid that possibly when the time came for him to die he might not have time to get it off his chest. It is much the same with me, and so, although I am not at this moment dying, I shall be doing so one of these days and I want to send you a parting word of good-bye.

Remember, it is the last you will ever hear from me, so think it over.

I have had a most happy life and I want each one of you to have as happy a life too.

I believe that God put us in this jolly world to be happy and enjoy life. Happiness doesn't come from being rich, nor merely from being successful in your career, nor by self-indulgence. One step towards happiness is to make yourself healthy and strong while you are a boy, so that you can be useful and so can enjoy life when you are a man.

Nature study will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things God has made the world for you to enjoy. Be contented with what you have got and make the best of it. Look on the bright side of things instead of the gloomy one.

But the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people. Try and leave this world a little better than you found it and when your turn comes to die, you can die happy in feeling that at any rate you have not wasted your time but have done your best. "Be Prepared" in this way, to live happy and to die happy-- stick to your Scout promise always-- even after you have ceased to be a boy-- and God help you to do it.

Your Friend,Baden-Powel
