NEW ZEALAND 1905 Large RNZN Museum
Ship's bell (for quarterdeck), impressed with "HMS New
Zealand 1905" and inscribed "To H.M.S. New Zealand by
the school children of her namesake colony - 1905". The
bell was gifted to the original HMS New Zealand in 1905.
Children were encouraged to raise funds towards the new
ship bearing their country's name. They started penny trails
and it is believed these coins were melted down and added
to the metal used to cast the bell. The first ship was
renamed Zealandia in 1911 when NZ purchased a battle
cruiser to bear the country's name. The bell was transferred
to HMS New Zealand upon its commissioning in 1912,
partly due to the efforts of Commander R.C. Davenport
who was aboard both the Zealandia and HMS NZ [see
documentation]. Was originally hung from a copper Maori
head. Bell has a large crack which has been repaired. Maori
decorative design has been partially worn away due to
polishing. A clapper is stored separately from the bell.

TAKAPU
Chrome plated working bell from the Inshore Survey Vessel
HMNZS Takapu (A 07). The bell is said to have been
discovered by a member of the public in shrubbery at a
park in New Plymouth (date unknown). The bell was passed
for return to the Naval Museum by a member of the public
via the Officer of the Day in HMNZS Canterbury when the
ship visited New Plymouth in April 2000. It is believed that
this bell was the working bell which was mounted on the
front screen of the vessel as there are no names inside the
rim. (At an inspection of the vessel carried out by myself in
March of this year it was noticed that this bell was missing).
The bell has many imperfections to the surface and the bell
rope is missing.
