The purpose of the NDHIN will be to help reduce patient intake time, minimize duplication of tests and paperwork, access the most recent updates to health records, and cut costs while increasing mobility. This safe and secure exchange of information benefits patients by providing their clinicians with a complete summary of care enabling them to use that information for decision-making. The system documents what information is shared and with whom. Patients can be comforted that their information is being used by providers to be better informed about the care they are receiving. Colorectal Cancer Screenings Trinity Health, through the Trinity Health Foundation, received a grant from the North Dakota State Health Department to help provide no-cost colorectal cancer screenings for eligible North Dakotans. As colon cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer deaths in North Dakota, Trinity saw it important to assist financially with the screening process. The $105,000 grant would help supply 50 screening colonoscopies, during the 2013-15 biennium, to those who are medically underinsured or uninsured. It is an advanced level of recognition for hospitals that consistently show compliance with stroke care standards. “This award is a tribute to the strides we’ve made in rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients as well as through education and monitoring of stroke cases,” said Dr. Ann Hoff, co-director of Trinity’s stroke care program. “One of our continued concerns still is that people tend to ignore stroke symptoms and wait too long to seek care.” The year before, Trinity Health was certified by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center, which is a hospital that has been certified to perform best practices when it comes to stroke care. Trinity Health became a proud member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network in 2013. The network provides its patients access to a variety of services through their local physician. This collaboration helps Trinity Health to further its mission of providing quality healthcare and health related services to the region at large. Survivorship Program Earlier this year, a survivorship program was created for patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy and transitioning from cancer treatment to their primary care providers. Survivorship begins the day a patient is diagnosed, explained Pamela Pearson, a Nurse Practitioner at the Trinity CancerCare Center. She added that the program aims to help the patient transition and maintain a healthy and well lifestyle after their treatment is completed. Pearson said they see adjuvant breast cancer women undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation. Some of the items the program provides are ideas for complimentary alternative medicines (CAM) that are evidence-based proven. “Some of these services would be yoga, music therapy, acupuncture, massage, and those are just a few of them,” Pearson said. A summary care plan is provided at the end of treatment along with education on long term side effects and surveillance recommendations to follow. The survivorship program is progressing and growing with the main goal to improve patient follow up, she said. “It’s going well,” Pearson noted. “The American College of Surgeons/ Commission on Cancer requires us to see 10 percent of the adjuvant cancer patients by 2015, as a part of being an accredited Cancer Center. We are comfortable meeting this condition by enrolling the adjuvant breast cancer patients into the survivorship program.” Trinity Patient Portal Trinity Health launched its own patient portal online in August 2014. TOUCHDOWN: Score with your New Year’sResolution in 2015 by Angela Phillips RD, LRD

The Super Bowl is only a little over amonth away, and to some it is now considered an unofficial American nationalholiday. For many, the Super Bowl isn’tjust about football though; Super Bowlparties are about indulging in delicious, savory, cheesy, and greasy food. The SuperBowl is actually the second-largest day forfood consumption in the United States, after Thanksgiving. With that being said, many find themselves making New Year’sresolutions to lose weight. The New Yearis an opportunity for a fresh start, andwith the Super Bowl being only a monthinto the New Year on February 1st, this isa recipe for disaster for many who havethese resolutions. So how can you stay ontrack with your New Year’s resolution, andstill enjoy some good food at those SuperBowl parties? With a few helpful tips, anda healthy spin on some classic Super Bowlrecipes, you can be sure to enjoy theSuper Bowl food and succeed with yourNew Year’s resolution in 2015.

For starters, instead of focusing on weightloss and a specific number you want toreach on the scale, focus on buildinghealthy habits that will stick with you, inorder to live a healthier lifestyle in theNew Year and the rest of your life. To helpchange behaviors and eating habits, makesmall realistic goals that are measurable.Write goals for yourself that answer thequestions “How much?” or “How many?”in order to track progress. For example, instead of having a vague goal of “I will eathealthier” or “I will work out more,” makea more specific goal of “I will eat one serving of fruit and vegetables each day” or

“I will walk 10 minutes every day.” Re-evaluate your goals every week or two,and as you achieve these goals, write morechallenging goals for yourself. With smallrealistic goals, you are more likely to keepon track with your New Year’s resolution.

After setting small goals for yourself, howdo you stay motivated to reach thesegoals? One way is to write goals down andput them somewhere visible to you daily.Whether it is on a sticky note on the bathroom mirror at home, or on yourcomputer screensaver at work, these littlereminders of your goals can help to stayfocused. Another good way to keep motivated toward achieving a New Year’sresolution is to seek support; tell friendsand family what your goals are in order tohave a sense of reliability. A reward systemis also good for motivation. If you have asuccessful week and meet all your goals, treat yourself, but try rewards that are notfood related such as going to a movie, getting a massage, or manicure.

When it comes to eating healthier andbecoming more active, there are many different goals you can make. Some ideasto help get you on the right path are thefollowing: eat a nutritious breakfast everyday, make half your plate fruits and vegetables, make half your grains wholegrains, ordrink 8-10glasses ofwater perday.Otherwaysto

help achieve your New Year’s resolution isto eliminate temptation and control yoursurroundings; replace chips and cookieswith healthy snacks in the cupboard. Planahead and have fresh fruits and vegetableswashed and ready to eat. Eat out less, andcook at home as a family; this can berewarding, and save money. If you do goout for meals, choose healthy restaurants, avoid buffets, and take half your meal togo or try splitting an entrée with someone.Using smaller plates and bowls at mealscan also help control portion sizes. To helpboost your activity level, find someonewith a similar goal as you that can be agym buddy and assist in motivating you.Remember, you don’t have to go to thegym to become active though; take a walkwith family or friends, or take the stairs atwork instead of the elevator. Start bydoing an activity for 10 minutes at a timeand gradually increase the time. Adultsshould aim for two hours and 30 minutesof exercise per week.

Now that you have the tools to achieveyour New Year’s resolution in 2015, andaid in jumpstarting a healthy lifestyle forthe rest of your life, it’s time to celebratewith some healthy alternatives to the classic recipes served at a Super BowlParty. These guilt-free snacks will be sureto score big at your Super Bowl party withyour guests.

His smile is infectiousand his personality willwarm up any conversation. As theChaplain at TrinityHomes, Luther Hansonwill talk to hundreds ofpeople every day.Although originally fromBemidji, Minnesota,Luther has been inMinot for over 41 years, and this is where hecalls home. “I was a PK(pastor’s kid) for 18years, I went to collegeat Bemidji State College, and graduated fromBSC. After that I attended Luther’sNorthwestern Seminaryin St. Paul,” he said.

Luther accepted a position at TrinityHomes after completinghis internship on July 1,1974. For Luther, thechaplain’s position created a different paththan a church ministry,“I had the opportunityto use all of my interests.” His interestsinclude art and painting, horticulture and music, just to name a few. When asked about anormal day Lutherlaughs, “I don’t care fornormal. I use my knowledge of horticulture to establishand maintain the gardens. I have manypaintings throughout the

building, and ofcourse, I enjoyimmensely visiting withresidents andstaff. They seeme out in thegardens, theymay catch mein the elevatoror in the hall-ways. We are allone familyhere.”

Luther is an accom-plished organist,“my Dad hadfour churches, and in those days, fourpump organs, and theyall leaked air. I was ayoung kid who couldpump the organsthrough the entirehymns; so I guess I started playing when Iwas 10 years old.” Evenin those days churchorganists were hard torecruit in small towns,“so I would show upwith a list of the hymnsthat I could play and goto work.”

Now today, some 50+years later, Luther is stillplaying the organ onSundays at TrinityHomes as he presidesover the morning worship service. And itis his music that often isa form of communica-

tion to older residents, and those who are struggling withAlzheimer’s or dementia. “As I play theolder hymns, many ofthem will say they don’tneed a hymnal. Theyremember the wordsand will sing along wordfor word. There just isnothing more rewardingthan having someonechime in when I play.”

Luther sees his positionas an extension of theparish ministry that residents may have, “itdoesn’t matter what religion they are, I wantto assist parish clergy inassisting our residents.”And in building relationships with theresidents, Luther is ableto open doors for people

to get closer to God. “Iam respected by alldenominations and wecan minister to eachother and pray for oneanother. I have been ableto witness a lot of wallsbroken down betweendenominations duringmy time at TrinityHomes.”

So whether in the gardens, at the organ orcomforting a family intime of need, LutherHanson seems to be aperfect fit as a chaplainfor Trinity Homes, aposition that changesdaily and that LutherHanson loves.

When Luther started atTrinity Homes in 1974,there were only twochaplains on staff. “Marv

Odland was at the hospital, and I was here.We covered for eachother when necessary.”Now there are fourchaplains on staff; threeat Trinity Hospital andLuther at TrinityHomes.

As the needs of thepatients and familiescontinue to grow; so dothe needs of the PastoralCare Department. Tohelp ensure the PastoralCare team is able tocontinue its ministry forresidents, patients, andfamilies, the TrinityHealth Foundation isconducting a campaignto raise money for theprogram. Penny War Yields forGuest House, CancerCareCottage It was an all-out war in Trinity Medical Group’s Central Business Office, but in the end, the Trinity Guest House and Trinity CancerCare Cottagebenefited.

The Central Business Office split into two teams and conducted a PennyWar from September 4 to October 31, 2014. According to Ashley Guillory, Reimbursement Specialist with Trinity Medical Group BusinessServices, $600 was raised.

The money was used to purchase two towels, a bath rug, two washcloths, and hand towels for each of the twelve guest rooms at theTrinity Guest House. An assortment of washcloths, hand towels, dishcloths, and a welcome mat were also purchased for the TrinityCancerCare Cottage. A $200 gift card from Target was also purchased to be used for other needs.

Teresa Sundsbak drove past the TrinityCancerCare Center every day. She neverthought about what went on there, theservices that were available, nor how ithelped the community.

It wasn’t until her daughter, DanielleSchilla, was diagnosed with breast cancerthat they bothlearned the impactthe CancerCareCenter had in theregion.

“I didn’t realize allthe programs thatwent on here, for alltypes of cancer,”Sundsbak said.“There is an amazing group ofpeople here, andpeople should really know what allgoes on here … andknow that we have astate-of-the-art cancer center here!”

So, on November 24, Schilla and Sundsbakbrought a check for $8,000 to the TrinityHealth Foundation, to be used at theTrinity CancerCare Center.

“I just want people to know theCancerCare Center does a lot of good forpeople,” said Schilla, who is now

cancer-free. She added that she felt shewanted to “give back to them as theyhelped a lot.”

The money came from the “Pretty in PinkMasquerade Ball,” a fundraiser for Schilla, which was held at the Grand Hotel onOctober 25. Schilla said that the fundraiser

organized on her behalf was a nicegesture. She is “not one for attention,” but the event turned outmore grandiose than she anticipated,so much that it will become anannual fundraising event.

“From everyone at the TrinityCancerCare Center, we would liketo extend our appreciation for theirgenerosity in thinking of us,” saidStephen Makoni, MD, FACP, ahematologist and oncologist withthe CancerCare Center. “Localpatients will benefit from theirthoughtful gift.”

The endowment was createdby Dr. Kenneth Keller, MedicalDirector of the radiologydepartment, in 1992, to honorthe memory of Michelle, hiswife, who died of cancer in1991. Michelle Keller served asProgram Director of the TrinitySchool of RadiologicTechnology and later asDepartment Manager of thehospital’s radiology department.

The award is “a testament toMichelle and her passion for teaching and desire for studentexcellence,” Dr. Keller said that evening. To receive the award, students must write a paper about radiology. “I wanted them to

learn how to put their thoughts together, how towrite and how to use radiology references,” Kellerexplained. “I wanted to do something because I hadseen several papers written by college students andwas dismayed because I didn’t think they weredemonstrating very good skills. The award would behundreds of dollars for the winner, so there was anincentive.”

The amount of the award varies as it is based on theinterest earned on the money deposited, Keller said.“It’s been as much as $700 in some years, dependingon the interest rate. If the interest is good, there ismore money.” Keller said that the award could “continue indefinitely, as long as there is a school.”

To aid in the continued education of Radiology students, donations can be made to the MichelleKeller Endowment at the Trinity Health Foundation,P.O. Box 5020, Minot, ND 58702-5020. While manystudents remain with Trinity Health after school, others go on to enjoy a career in healthcare throughout the United States.

By age three, the averagechild has developedenough speech and language skills to carryon a simple conversationwith an adult.

When Lisa noticed thather three-year-old son,Adam*, was havingsome difficulties, shetook him to see hispediatrician who, inturn, referred them toTrinity Health’s Speech-LanguagePathology department.

Referrals are made basedon a few aspects of communication skills.“They may have a lower-than-normalexpressive vocabulary, maybe they aren’t following directions verywell, or maybe they arereally difficult to understand,” explainedMarla Rose, Speech-Language Pathologistand manager of thedepartment.

“He was barely able toexpress his wants or hisneeds,” Lisa said, explaining that her sonexpressed himself withone word statements,

such as “Milk” or “Help.”

At least, that is what hisexpressions were likebefore he started speechtherapy with ChelsieHaaland, MS, CCC-SLP,a Speech-LanguagePathologist with TrinityHealth. Haaland workedwith Adam, who alsohas Level II autism, anddesigned his therapy tosuit his needs.

When therapy is recommended, childrenare generally scheduledfor two sessions weekly, meeting for 30 to 45minutes, Rose said. Withtwo months of regularlyscheduled sessions,Adam’s speechimproved.

“Chelsie was amazing,”Lisa said. “She reallyworked hard developinga relationship with him, which was so important.Right off the bat, shewas able to develop thatrelationship and makesure he had a routineestablished.”

By examining thestrengths and weaknesses unique to

each child, a delay may or may not be identified “…and basedon that, we make recommendations,”Haaland said.“Sometimes, we recommend a follow-upvisit in six months ifconcerns persist; or werecommend direct therapy services andwork with the familiesto find a schedule thatcan meet their needs.”

With the help of visualsupports and otherstrategies, Adam wasable to communicate. “Iwas a little skepticalbecause he has somebehavioral issues, and Ithought he wouldn’t,”Lisa said. “By the end,he was moving the visual choice cards. Hewas excited to go thereand see Chelsie. Heknew exactly what toexpect. All of the different tactics she usedworked wonderfully.”

Causes of delayed development of speechand language can vary.“Sometimes, a childmight have had a history

of chronic ear infections.Adequate hearing is animportant factor inspeech and languageskills,” Haaland said.“Environment also canimpact communicationskills. For example, theremay not be a lot ofopportunities for socialinteraction or exposureto language and literacy.Or, it could be something a little moreserious, like a developmental delay orneurological disorderaffecting areas of development other thanjust communication.”

Referrals from pediatricians arerequired for patients tobe seen, Haaland said.Once a patient has beenreferred, an appoint-ment for an evaluation isscheduled. “Evaluationtypes vary depending onthe concerns reported.Language skills may beevaluated: how theyplay and use gestures, how well they understand language, and how they use language to get their

wants and needs met. But, if the primary concern is ‘I don’tunderstand them,’ wedo an evaluation to seehow their speech-soundsand patterns are developing and howthey compare to theirtypically-developing,same-age peers.”

“It’s awesome,” Lisa saidof her son’s experiencewith Trinity’s PediatricSpeech-LanguagePathology. “My sonachieved great results –more than I ever expected in a short period of time. I wouldhighly recommend it.”
