editorialNammoiscelebratingits10yearanniversaryin2008.IamhappytopresentanewNammoBulletinwithageneralupdateonourbusiness,whatNammohasachievedinthisfirstdecadeandwhatweintendtogoforinthenext.
Nammowasestablishedin1998bymergingammunitioncompaniesinFinland,SwedenandNorway.AlthoughmostactivitieswerelocatedinneighbouringNordiccountries,itwasaconsiderablechallengetoalignandconsolidatetheGroup.Todaywemayconcludethatthemergerhasproventobeverysuccessful,duringtheyearswehavealsoincludedadditionalmembersinNorway,Germany,SwitzerlandandUSA.WewillcontinuetodevelopNammoasawellrecognizedsupplierofammunition,missileproductsanddemilitarizationservices.
Tobecomeaglobalplayeralsodemandsincreasedawarenessonanoverallperspective.Nammoisatechnologybased,customerdrivencompanyoperatinginaninternationalmarketregulatedbystrictexportregulationssetforthbytheauthoritiesinthecountriesweoperate.
Whengrowinggloballywithamixtureofcultures,languagesandnationalitieswithinaGrouplikeNammoitalsorequiresincreasedattentionandawarenessongeneralGrouppoliciestostrengthenandunifytheGroupanditspeople.

Nammo’sorganizationhasbeenthroughdifferentchangesduringthecompany’sfirst10years.Thestructuralalterationsareaconsequenceofchangesinthemarketandalsoaresultofstreamliningtheorganizationtoachievebetterresultsandperformance.
Tostrengthenourposition,thefirstyearsofthecompany’shistorywereaffectedbydownsizinginmanypartsofouroperation.Intheperiodof2001-2005thenumberofemployeesdecreasedfrommorethan1500toalevelof1100.Theresultofthissignificantdownsizing,togetherwithimplementationofimprovementprogramsinthecompany’skeyoperations,trulyimprovedNammo’sresultinthesameperiod.Onenegativeeffectofsignificantdownsizingisnormallyahigheraverageageintheorganization.Asacounterbalanceofthiseffect,recruitmentofyoungtalentedemployeesbecameafactorforNammo.HigheractivitiesinmanypartsofNammo’sopera-tionsfrom2005maderecruitmentoneofthekeyfactorsfromtheHRperspective.Theresultofhighactivitytogetherwith
acquisitionsiswhenNammocelebrates10yearsofoperations,thenumberofemployeeshasreached1700.
Talent management
InNammo,talentmanagementmeansdevelopthepeopleonboard,transfercompetenceandrecruittherightpeopletothecompany.Inrecruitment-processesweareaimingtofindpeoplewiththerightattitudeandcompetence.Goodrecruitmentprocessesisimportantforsecuringabetterdemographicbalanceintheorganization,aswellastostrengthenthetotalcompetencelevelinthecompany.Boththesefactorsareimportanttosecureourabilitytomeetourtargetsbothshorttermandlongterm.Atthesametimeasrecruitmentofnewcompetenceisimportant,retainingcriticalcompetenceintheorganizationisanimportantfactor.Competencetransferbetweendiffer-entdepartmentsandbetweentheemployeesisimportanttomaintainandtodevelopthetotalcompetenceplatforminthecompany.

ThemainobjectiveforNammo’sEthicalCodeofConductistoestablishusefulguidelinesforouremployees.Theseguide-linesaremeanttoassistouremployeeswhentheydobusinessbothnationallyandinternationally.WewantouremployeestofeelcomfortablewhendoingbusinessandthattheyhavetrustintheNammoGroup.Themainfocushasbeenonprevent-ingcorruption,rulesforexportcontrol,products&services,employeesandwhistleblowers.
TheEthicalCodeofConducthasgonethrougharevisionpro-cessandwaslatelyre-launchedbothinternallyandexternally.
ForNammo,theEthicalCodeofConductisaguidelinetoaculturethatshallbefollowedbyalltheemployeeswithintheGroup.Inordertoachievethiswehavetotakeintoconsider-ationthatweareaGroupwithpeoplefromsixdifferentnationsdependingonsixnationallawsandregulations.MostofourcustomersalsohaveincreasedattentiononethicsanditisequallyimportantthatNammo’ssales-personnelareawareofandrespectourcustomer’sethicalguidelines.WithallthesevariousobstaclesasabackgroundNammo’sEthicalCodeofConductshalltakethedifferentaspectsintoconsideration.
ItisimportantforNammotocontinuetobearecognizedandseriousbusinesspartnerwithinthedefensebusinessandaseriousplayerandsupportforthelocalcommunitieswhereourproductionunitsarelocated.

Thinkingback10yearswhenthecompanywasestablished,NammohasaccomplishedalotwithinHESS.Atthattimetherewerebigdifferencesbetweeneachcompanythatmergedin1998.Wecamefromdifferentcultureswithdifferentlangu-ages.HESSresourcesavailableoneachsitewereverydifferentandoftenlimited.However,wemustnotforgetthatsomeofthecompanieswereveryoldandhadbeenworkingwithHESSintheirownwayformanyyears.
ThefirsttaskforthecorporationwastomakeasurveyonhowtheconditionswereintheHESSarea.Ataskforcewithrepre-sentativesfromseveralcountrieswasestablishedinNovember1998.Theassignmentforthetaskforcewastoevaluatetheactualsituation,proposeshort-termactionsineachsiteandreportneedsfornecessaryadjustmentintheNammoGroup.ThetaskforceendedthetaskinMay1999andinthereporttheysuggestedanumberofimprovements,like:• HESSpolicyfortheNammoGroup• Plansandgoalsforeachcompany• Planforenvironmentalcertification• HESSorganization• Riskanalyses• Regulationsforsafetyinspections• Proactivemaintenance• Antiflameclothing• Safetyshoes• Trainingandeducation• Handlingwaste• Cleanupinside/outside
Afterthisperiod,mostoftheopenactionsfromthesur-veywereclosed.NammoHESSpolicywasworkedoutandcommonrulesandregulationsweremade.ThestructureofproactiveHESSworkinNammoasacorporationstartedandaHESSrepresentativefortheNammoGroupwasappointed.ThetaskfortheHESSManagerwastoperformayearlysafetyAuditinallNammocompaniesandworkforcontinuousimprovementtopreventaccident.Itwasimportanttousetheknowledgeinallthedifferentsitestobeabletosharethisalloverthecorporation.
HESS seminars
Representativesfromallsitesgatheredonceayeartodiscussandsharecasesandsubjectsofcommoninterest.TheseHESSseminarsarestillanimportantyearlyeventandthetopicsandlocationfortheseminarfluctuate.
AsnewcompanieshavejoinedtheGroup,theHESSorganiza-tionhasbeengivennewknowledgeandchallenge.TheHESSlevelinNammohasslowlyimprovedandthecooperationbetweenthedifferentsitesisgoingmuchbetter.Thestatisticsshowsthatwehaveachievedgreatprogressinseveralareas.Lastyearthepercentageofsickabsencewasthelowesteversince1998(4,1%).
Wehavestillalotofareasthatneedsimprovements,suchasreportingofincidentsandaccidents,riskanalysesandcom-monHESSsystemontheinternalnet.Unfortunately,wehavelearnedthehardwaythroughsomeseriousaccidentsandinsomecaseswithfatalresult.ThisremindsusthatwealwaysmustthinkHESSinallpartsoftheorganizationandoperationstopreventseriousaccidentstooccur.HESSisanever-endingprojectthatweneedtopayattentiontoeverydayandnevertobesatisfiedbytheexistingachievements.

Inarestlessperiodofproductdevelop-ment,allmanufacturingstepshavebeenanalyzedoverandover.Machineshavebeensqueezedouttorunwithmoreaccuracy,specialpartshavebeende-signedortheirpropertieshavebeenimproved.OurprojectteamwassupportedbyLapua’sandSchönebeck’sbestandmostexperiencedengineers,discussing,planningandmakingexperiments.Finally,whiledescribinganddefiningprojectrequirements,werealizedthatwewerealreadyfarawayfromthewaywediditpreviously.Unitedwesucceededtocircleinseveralmeansofmeasurement.Itwasexcitingtowatchhowitdeveloped:duringthepast30yearsinammunitionmanufac-turing,mostlyeverythinghasbeenmea-suredwithin1/100tolerances.Stepbystepitcamecloserevendailynow,andfinallyweunderstoodthatwehadtoleavethisperiodbehindusandenteranewarea.Sowedevelopednewinstruments,andafterthemalsoanenvironmentaroundthem,wearenowtalkingabouttolerancesof1/1.000–andwearestilltryingtogetitsmaller.Nexttarget:Nano!

Toincreaseflexibilityandthenumberofapplicationsinthebattlefieldofweaponplatformstherehasbeenadevelopmentofprogrammableammunition.Programmableammunitiongivesthesoldiersnewopportunities.Oneexampleisthenewabilityoftakingoutunfriendlyobjectshiddenbehindhousecorners,onrooftopsorinsidebuildings.Thiscanbedonebyprogrammingtheammunitioninanairburstmode,detonatingintheairclosetotheundesirableobject.
Theexistingprogrammingmethodsasinductiveprogrammingorprogrammingbygalvaniccontacthavetobebuiltintotheweaponplatformfromthebeginning.Theyarenottechnologi-calsolutionsyoucaneasilyadontoanexistingplatformatalaterstage.
Nammohasdevelopedanovelmethodforprogrammingofammunition.Thismethodisbasedoncommunicationbetweentheweaponplatformandtheammunitionbytransmittingradio
frequency(RF)signalsfromtheplatformtotheammunitionduringthefirstmillisecondsoftimeofflight.Thesignalsre-ceivedbytheammunitioncanforinstancetelltheammunitionatwhatdistancethegunnerwantanairburstdetonationoftheammunition.Thismethodcanalsobeusedforprogrammingofmoresophisticatedmodesorfunctionsoftheammunition.Theprogrammingmethodassuchhasnolimits.Thelimitisthefunctionalityofthefuze.
Thisnovelmethodforprogrammingammunitioncaneasilybeintroducedonnewplatformsandadoptedonexistingplatforms.Nammointroducesaverycosteffectivesolutionforintroductionofacapabilityofprogrammingammunitiononnewandexistingweaponplatforms.
Thistechnologyisabouttobequalifiedforthe40mmAGLsystem.

NammoTalleyhasrecentlypassedamajormilestoneinthedevelopmentofnewpropulsiontechnologyforNammo’sM72familyofshoulder-firedweapons.TheFireFromEnclosureorFFEpropulsioncapabilityallowssoldierstofiretheweaponfrominsideanenclosedspace.Thenewtechnologywillre-placethecurrentrocketmotorsthatproducehighback-blastthatcandamageroomstructuresandgunnerhearingwhenlaunchedfrominsidearoom.Soldiersthatusethenewsystemwillnowbeabletofiretheweaponfromenclosedcoverinbuiltupareas.Inlate2007theWeaponsProductDevelopmentTeaminMesasuccessfullypassedamajortestseriesdesignedtovalidatethedesignofthecompleteweaponsystem.Thesuccessofthislimitedtestseriesprovidedthego-aheadtoenteraWeaponQualificationTestSeriesforaU.S.DepartmentofDefenseCustomerinthesummerof2008.

TheMissileProductsDivisionatNammoRaufosshasexperi-encedahigherandhigherdemandonmanoeuvrabilityonaneverincreasingnumberofnewlydevelopedmissiles.NammohasinvestedalotandsucceededinthedevelopmentofThrustVectorControl(TVC)systemsforabroadrangeofmissiles.WhatstartedforNammoonAir-to-Airmissilesisnowtrans-ferredtogroundandshiplaunchedmissiles.Thrustvectoringcapabilitiesenableformoreflexiblesystemswithaquickerreactiontime.Thisinitsturnopensupforamoreeffectivesystemoveralargerrangeofthreatscenarios.NammohasacquiredaleadingpositioninthedesignofTVC-basedsystemsbasedontheiruniquecapabilitiesondesignandsimulation.

Inthemiddleof2007NammoDemilDivisionwasawardedacontractfordemilitarizationoftheMLRSSystemfromNamsacoveringsystemsfromNLandUK.Duetothesizeofthecontract,investmentsinnewprocessesaswellasupdatingofalreadyexistingprocessestookplace.Thedemilitarizationprocessisdoneinthefollowingsteps.Firstoperationisthedownloadingoftherocketsfromtherocketpods.Therearesixrocketsineachpodandaspecialroomisdedicatedforthiswork.Inthisfirstoperationthedisassemblyofthefuze,burstingcord,ignitersetc.aredoneandpackedforafurtherhandlinginthethermaltreatmentfacility,aswellasextractthesinglerocketoutfromtherocketpod.Theseparationofthewarheadfromtherocketmotorisdoneandbothcomponentsarepackedforfurtherhandlingwithinthefacility.
Thewarheadistransportedtothefullyautomaticwarheaddis-assemblyline.ThemachinepullsouttheM77Bombletonebyonefromthewarhead.Furtheritiscuttingthebombletfuze,separatingthecupperfunnelandpackstheopenbombletonaspecialtrayforhandlingintheplasmaburningmodule.Theprocessismonitoredbyvideofromtheoutside.
Therocketmotoristakentotheupgradedwashoutline.Thewashoutisdonewithhighpressurewaterandtheindividualrocketmotorisfixedintotheequipment.Theprocessworksautomaticallyandisvideomonitoredfromthecontrolroom.TheAPC(rocketpropellant)istoahighdegreeseparated
fromthewatercontentbeforeitisautomaticallytransportedandpackedincardboardboxes.TheAPCiseitherburnedinthethermaltreatmentplantthatisfullycompliantwithallinternationalandnationalenvironmentalregulationsorbeingrecycledforreuseincivilianproducts.
The“plasmaburningmodule”isdevelopedforburningsub-munitionsespeciallyBombletsDM1348andBombletsM46/M48andM77.Thismoduleisconnectedwiththegascleaningsystemfromthethermaltreatmentplant418.Itworksparalleltothethermaltreatmentplant418.
Theprocesscontainsafeedingprocess,anincinerationandburningprocessandacontrolprocess.Alltheseprocessesworkautomaticallyandundersafetycontrol.
Afterdisposalofthesubmunitions(ICM,MLRS),thebombletswillbedeliveredtotheburningmodule.Thefeedingbeltwillbefilledwiththebomblets.Atthefirst,onebombletswillberemovedfromthefeedingbeltandtransportedtoaSluice.Thebombletfallsdowninthe“plasmaburningchamber”ontransportationdevices.Insideofthischamber,thebombletwillincineratebyplasmaburner.Aftertheburningprocess,thebombletwillbecontrolledbycontroldevicesforfreeofexplosives.
Thescrap(emptybodies)willbecollectedinascrapcontainer.
Thegasesfromtheburningprocesswillbetransportedbyapipetotheafterburnerandgascleaningsystemforcleaningthegases.
Thecompleteprocessworksautomaticallyandismonitoredbyvideo.

Overthelastyears,theenvironmentaltestcentreatNammoRaufosshaveperformedvibrationandshocktestsoftheStingRaytorpedoaspartofthequalificationprogrammeforthisweapon’snewIMwarhead.TDW–MBDA,Schrobenhausen(GE)ismanufacturerofthewarheadandBAESystems,Waterlooville(UK)manufacturesthetorpedoweaponsystem.
Initially,thedemandforthevibrationtestswasthattheyshouldbeperformedina“free-free”attachmentconfigura-tion.Thisbasicallymeansthatthetestitemissuspendedinanelasticmanner,allowingminormovementinalldirections.Thevibrationforceisappliedtoaminorareaoftheitem.Atthetime,thiswasanentirelynewmethodtoNammo,availableresultsandotherevidencefromsimilartestswasnotpres-ent,andthepathforwardseemedquitecrooked.However,acommondeterminationtoovercomethechallenges,solvetheriddleandsucceedwiththetestswasalreadyestablishedwitheveryoneinvolved.
Keypointsofsuccesswerethesuspensionsystemanddesign,andmanufactureofsuitablefixtureassemblies.Nammodesignergroupwithheldasignificantexperienceinfixturedesignalreadyandprovidedakitwhichprovedwellsuitedforthemission.BAESystems,atthisstagemainlyrepresentedbyMrDavidMann,demonstratedinventivethinkingmatedwithcleverengineeringwhensettingupthesuspensionsystem.
Sofar,twosuccessfulvibrationtesteventshavebeencom-pleted,andatthispointtheprogrammeisyetanotherdemon-strationofthefactthatco-operationandteamworkiscrucialforsuccess.Nammohasgainedvaluableexperienceinafieldnottoowellknowntousbefore,andwishtothankthepartners,TDW-MBDAandBAESystemsforthefruitfulco-operation.

Well,everybodyinsportshootingknowsLapua’slegendaryMIDAS.MIDAShasbeendevelopedforbeingtheworld’sleadingrimfireammunitionformanyyears.Itisbehindthecurrent60shotsproneworldrecordandthebenchrestlongrifleworldrecord(BR-50),andafewhundredotherrecords.Lapua’suncompromisingapproachisprobablymostevidentinthisrimfirecartridge.
Fromthebeginning,Lapuawaseagertoimproveeverythingmoreandmore.ThoughMIDASwaswellknownallovertheworldforhighestaccuracy,adevelopmentprocesswasstarted.Now,ithasbeenrelaunchedwithimprovedaccuracyandconsistencyasMIDAS+,justtoshowourpridethatitwaspossibletomakeagoodproductbetter.
