Running a business at any time can be a perilous experience. Running a business during a global pandemic is a challenge that exceeds the imagination of even the most pessimistic forecaster. But somehow, even at times like these, individuals find the strength, the courage and the belief to do exactly that.
Beginning much the same as any other year, 2020 dawned with the promise of continued regional economic vitality, grounded in an economic foundation of service, education and health care and buoyed by a solid tourism and hospitality sector. But quickly COVID-19 made null every forecast for economic vitality as markets were shuttered, customers retreated into social isolation, and our once optimistic visions became clouded with uncertainty.
The key to any entrepreneurial success is an innate ability to adapt to changing situations and to adjust to the needs of the marketplace. More than ever before it is vital to maximize the economic and personal potentials of the local community. When supply chains are interrupted and traditional customer bases are depleted, such as with the hospitality sector, it’s crucial to remember that the greatest source of product as well as repeat and loyal customers are those found right here in Nanaimo. Supporting local works both ways.
Your friends, family, neighbors and associates already know you. Your brand recognition is already in place, while your personal history of local commitment is the rock your enterprise is constructed on. Nanaimo and its immediate surrounding region has become the global market your business needs to cater to. In 2020 the drive to support ‘shop local’ has become more important to business positivity than it ever has before. Now it’s time to expand on that positive track record.
‘Business as Usual’ – is a time-honored phrase that has no real meaning in 2020. There is nothing usual about the environment today’s businesses are challenged to operate in. But what is usual, what is certain is that the imagination, dedication and courage of Nanaimo’s business community will find the way to successfully adapt to the quickly changing realities of this remarkable marketplace.
The future will operate much differently. The ‘new normal’ is a new experience waiting for us to shape and define it. Throw out the old ‘normal’, throw out ‘business as usual’. We have the opportunity to create a new future for each of our businesses and our community overall… I say seize the opportunity now!

Welcome To NanaimoThe City of Nanaimo is a community of 90,000 located
on the east side of Vancouver Island, approximately 110
km north of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia.
The Regional District of Nanaimo has a population of
approximately 150,000. The primary trading and services
area served by Nanaimo is the 400,000 people living
north of the Malahat – over half of Vancouver Island!
OUR HISTORYNanaimo was first settled thousands of years ago by the Coast Salish Peoples who named the area “Sne-ney-mous” which means “a meeting or gathering place”. The Coast Salish traveled from villages along the Nanaimo River and False Narrows to build longhouses at Departure Bay.
The Snuneymuxw First Nation is one of the largest Nations in B.C. with a population of over 1,700 people. Snuneymuxw territory encompasses one of the most productive and resource rich areas at the heart of the Salish Sea.
Change began with Imperial Spain’s explorers charting these coastal waters in 1791. Control over the area passed to the British Empire in the early 19th century and the first settlers arrived in the early 1800’s and set up a trading post, which established Nanaimo as an important hub of commerce. A fort was erected by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1853 and is now a restored landmark. From 1852 until 1952, Nanaimo was primarily a coal town. Originally, coal-burning ships refueled here and coal was exported in large quantities from numerous mines in the area. The City of Nanaimo was incorporated as a municipality in 1874.
By the middle of the 20th century, increased demand for lumber and a declining need for coal brought the area’s thriving forests to the forefront. Nanaimo’s fishery also maintained a high profile as an economic driver during this time. Around the turn of the millennium, economic conditions were changing dramatically and resource industries started to lose their position as the driving forces of business and employment in the region.
Nanaimo has since risen in prominence as a centre for education, health care, government services, tech innovation & development, communications, tourism and as a transportation centre. This changing economic landscape will shape Nanaimo’s future and its changing demographics. Meanwhile, Nanaimo continues to develop as a centre for the meeting and movement of products and people – a gathering place, as always.
CLIMATENanaimo boasts one of the mildest and sunniest climates in Canada, experiencing close to 1850 hours of sunshine annually. The city is protected from Pacific weather systems by a range of mountains which run the length of Vancouver Island. Nanaimo’s climate is also moderated by the Strait of Georgia.
The region’s range of moderate precipitation makes it the ideal place for year-round recreational pursuits. You can truly golf, sail, surf and ski all on the same day for many months of the year!

Improving our infrastructure is essential to our long-term sustainability and helps to drive regional growth. We continue to enjoy record passenger growth as Vancouver Island’s second busiest airport. We’ve worked collaboratively with our air carrier partners to secure more air service, which truly makes us your Island Gateway to the World.
The expanded Terminal Building gives us a modern facility that enhances the travelling experience. The bold design provides comfort and efficiency while ref lecting Central Vancouver Island’s unique identity with its panoramic views of mountains, trees and sky.
We appreciate the support of the Building Canada Fund, Small Communities program for this project. Infrastructure Canada and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure each invested $2.5 million, and Nanaimo Airport Commission invested $9.2 million.
Our careful management ensured the expansion came in under budget and ahead of schedule. I’d like to thank Dave Witty, Chair of our Building Committee, and his fellow directors for their leadership in this project. Thanks also to airport CEO and President Mike Hooper and his wonderful team for all their expertise and efforts.
Our new facility is the first step in Nanaimo Airport Commission’s innovative 20-year plan for the Terminal Building. Our plan calls for a series of modules, each one plugging in seamlessly to the others. We’ll add new modules as demand arises and funding is available.
We look forward to many more milestones as we continue to build our future.

quickly pivoted to its mission as a vital
communications portal and strengthened our
government advocacy.
We’ve been working hard since then to publish multiple stories on recovery every week. Many of these programs were reinforced with help from the Chamber network, and we advocating to change government programs.

Business compositionAs with Canadian business composition, the majority of the businesses in the Nanaimo region are small to medium size enterprises. Approximately 88 percent of the businesses are small, employing fewer than 19 people; 155 businesses (4%) have more than 50 employees.
Businesses operating in Nanaimo are required to have a City of Nanaimo business licence. As of Dec 31, 2017 there were 6,063 licences issued for businesses operating in the city.
Most of Nanaimo’s businesses are locally owned operations. 67% describe themselves as locally owned and operated, 3% are franchise operations and 9.49% are branch offices of larger companies.
Home-based businesses account for about 37% of total business licences issued. Many people choose to use their home as a “business incubator” to test their initial business ideas and later move into commercial space.
The figure below details the number of business licences issued by the city of Nanaimo, by industry sector. As of December 31, 2017, the construction sector had the highest number of licenses, accounting for 18.7% of the total. The retail sector has the second highest number of business licences accounting for 12.9% of the total. The chart does not include unlicensed businesses, government service operations, or not-for-profit organizations. City of Nanaimo data includes businesses of every size including single proprietors.
Trade areaNanaimo’s location has helped the city develop as an important retail, service, transportation and distribution centre for central and northern Vancouver Island. The city has about 58% of the Nanaimo Regional District population, but has 75% of the region’s retail and service floor space.
The city’s primary trade area comprises about 164,235 people drawn from the Nanaimo Regional District and the town of Ladysmith. This trade area has been growing due to population growth. On average, the primary trade area grew by 5.93% between 2011 and 2016.

When choosing a moving company, it’s important to do your research to ensure you know exactly who you’re entrusting your possessions to. After all, your belongings are more than ‘stuff’– they are your life and memories.
You will be offered a wide variety of services at prices that differ from mover to mover. Some prices will be significantly different from others. Ask yourself the following questions:
1. What am I risking by not fully checking out my mover? (Hint: All my possessions will be in their care.)
2. Will my goods arrive on time, complete and in good condition?
3. Is this mover capable of doing the job?
When choosing a mover, it’s important to find out all you can about the company:
1. Do a reference check with your local Better Business Bureau and the Canadian Association of Movers. Look into the moving company’s years of business, ratings and reviews. If there were complaints filed, how were they resolved and were they done quickly.
2. Is the Moving Company associated with known, reputable, Long Standing, Van Line?
3. Is the company invested in the community? Do they have a warehouse and secure premises? Visit it and see if the facility is the kind of space where you would want your furniture stored.
4. Look at their vehicles. Are they clean, in good repair and fully equipped to do your move?
5. Do they wrap all furnishings in clean Moving Blankets? Are upholstered items protected by plastic coverings? How will they protect your floors?
6. Ask the mover for references.
7. Is the price significantly lower than others? Is this because the mover is using shoddy equipment, minimal or sub-standard packing material or untrained personnel?
8. Is the deal for cash? If it is, chances are you won’t have to pay taxes and the mover is not going to pay them to the government. BUT there is no record of your move and the mover will assume no liability for losses or damage.
9. Does the mover have an insurance certificate? If he does, then when you pay for insurance, your goods are insured; if he does not, then…good luck!
10. Does he have a Workers’ Compensation Board certificate? If he does, no problem; if not, you may be liable for any injuries incurred by his workers on your premises.
Below are others’ tips:
• Make arrangements with your mover as far in advance as possible. Last-minute calls during the busy season may mean spending extra money or not finding a mover at all.
• If you’re moving into an apartment, reserve the elevator.
• If you are moving into a house, arrange for street parking if needed. In the winter, make sure that the driveway is cleared of snow.
• Moving in the winter can throw you challenges you never thought of. Do not put objects that can’t be frozen in the truck. Keep them with you.
• Keep your valuables with you. That means jewellery, money and important documents. Movers will not accept responsibility for these items.
• Leave clothing and bedding in dresser drawers. Remove breakables and don’t overload.
• Leave furniture in its original place. Don’t move it all to one room.
• Keep any luggage you will need on the trip separate.
• Take down any pictures, fixtures or photos hanging from the wall before the movers arrive.
• If you will be packing yourself, start well in advance of moving day. Discard any unwanted items.
• Defrost your freezer before moving day. Pack food in boxes, laundry baskets or camping coolers. Use up as much food as possible in the weeks before the move.
• Mark the sides and the top of cartons for easy identification. You will want to write a quick summary of contents, as well as the room (i.e., kitchen, main bedroom) in which they’re required.
• Be careful not to overpack a carton. Heavy items (such as hardcover books) should be packed in smaller containers.
• If you have pets, be sure you have carrying cages.
• Hire a babysitter for the day if you have children.
• Walk through your house or apartment with the mover indicating special-care items or giving specific instructions. Always be sure there is someone to do this with the mover. This step might help you avoid heartache when your belongings arrive at the new house.
• Verify the delivery address with the mover and provide information about how you can be contacted at the new dwelling.
• Try to be at the new home before the movers start unloading. Know where you want your belongings placed.
If you’ve planned well, this day will be stress-free and an exciting adventure. If you planned poorly, however, moving day will be full of problems, headaches and, in some cases, disasters.

TRANSPORTATIONOne of Nanaimo’s greatest natural assets is its geographic location. It accounts for its early establishment as a ‘gathering place’ and has led to its acknowledgement as a transportation hub for the island. An all-weather airport, floatplane terminal, 3 BC Ferries terminals, a recently enhanced highway system (Island Parkway), and a public transit system spanning a widely spread-out community. The average commute time from the outer boundaries of the city to downtown is 20 minutes.
AirThe Nanaimo Airport – YCD, operated by the Nanaimo Airport Commission, is located 15 km south of the city. It is an all-weather (ILS) airport capable of handling medium size passenger jets (Boeing 737’s etc). The airport’s commercial interests are served by carriers such as WestJet, Air Canada & Island Express offering multiple flights daily to Vancouver, Calgary, Victoria, Abbotsford, Boundary Bay, Sunshine Coast and Comox. The Nanaimo Seaplane Terminal, operated by the Nanaimo Port Authority, provides customer comfort and technical/security services for seaplane flights from downtown Nanaimo aboard carriers Harbour Air (www.harbourair.com), Sunshine Coast Air (www.sunshinecoastair.com) and West Coast Air. Charter flights are also available. Multiple daily regularly scheduled flights to YVR South, the Sunshine Coast and the downtown Vancouver Float Plane Terminal are available. Daily Helijet service operates from the Port of Nanaimo Cruise Ship Terminal, next to downtown Nanaimo, landing at their Heliport on the downtown Vancouver waterfront next to SkyTrain, WestCoast Express, and Seabus in the heart of the waterfront commercial district. www.helijet.com
FerriesRegularly scheduled ferry service is available between Nanaimo and Vancouver via the Departure Bay/Horseshoe Bay route (1 hour 40 minutes) or the Duke Point/Tsawwassen (2 hour) route. The third ferry terminal operated by BC Ferries runs between downtown Nanaimo and Gabriola Island (40 minutes). Adjacent communities offer BC Ferry services to Gulf Islands. CJ started a t-shirt design business as part of his Grade 10 personal project, a core part of the International Baccalaurete program. Other students wrote novels, did medical research, crafted an electric guitar and more.
But CJ’s passion is business. From design to outsourcing production, he directs all aspects of the operation. The school project is long since complete, but he continues to develop and market his growing clothing company.

Nanaimo Regional General HospitalAs the largest hospital north of Victoria on Vancouver Island, NRGH provides primary hospital services to the residents in the Nanaimo/Parksville/Qualicum region, and secondary referral services for the 400,000 living north of Victoria.
The hospital has a medical/dental staff of approximately 250.
