• Good morning, My name is Momen Zalabany i’m a member of nano student group, and i’m honored to give this opening presentation of this congress in which we will begin with a short briefing on nanotechnology and nanomedicine. Followed by some information on the current status of this field. Then I will be discussing the prospect of initiating this science in our faculty which will be our main topic in this paper

NanotechnologyDefinition

Nanotechnology is defined as Research and technology development at the atomic, molecular and macromolecular levels

Generally nanotechnology deals with structures sized between 1 to 100 nanometer. Nano Scale

Nanometer = 1/1,000,000 mmPrefix Nano means “Dwarfs”

Slide 2• Starting with defining nanotechnology, there has been a great confusion

among scientist around the exact definition of nanotechnology, however, it is to be noticed that different institutions start their process by defining nanotechnology in a way that is most relevant to their research purposes.

• NNI defined nanotechnology “Nanotechnology is defined as Research and technology development at the atomic, molecular and macromolecular levels, to create structures, devices, and systems that have novel functional properties”.

• The prefix “Nano” is derived from a Greek origne which means “Dwarf” . Which is mathematicly equal to 1mil of mm, to imagine this we can say that the human hair diameter = 100,000 nm

• From the graph below we can that the area of interest is between 1-100 nm , which is equvilent to glucose molecule up to size of a viruse

Slide 3• To undersan more we can fist look at History of nanotechnolgy• It has been accounted that nanotechnology began with Prof. Richard

Feynman historical speech in 1959 titled “There’s plenty of room at the bottom” in which he outlined that there is nothing in physics that stands against the manipulation of matter atom by atom to build up bigger objects from the bottom up tailored to specific needs .

• • And then in 1977 when Prof. Eric Drexler originates concept of molecular

nanotechnology at MIT “building machines on the scale of molecules,”• But it wasn’t until the mid 1980’s that these words began to materialize

with the invention of the Scanning and tunnelling microscope followed by the Atomic force microscope which gave scientist a resolution of power with of 0.1 nm lateral resolution and 0.01 nm depth, and also gave the ability to manipulate atoms.

Slide 4• Operating on the nanoscale includes Miniaturization of the micro scale and

molecular complexity of atomic scale and hopefully they can both intersect to give us better understating and control over biology

• As we notice any science developing course we notice a constant and common thread which is As life science develops, our level of control and interaction increases in depth and become more precise by being able to study analyze and produce at smaller size

For example With the invention the light microscope an entire life science has been radically changed over the following years

• The common pattern between microbiology and nanomedicine is that nanomedicine has also been changed radically after the AFM which gives us a hint over the amount of developing a head of us

• Generally speaking biology science is heading toward solving molecular complexity on level of atoms

Nanotechnology is a size-based science

“Nano” as a prefix means size <100nm

is an umbrella term used to define the products, processes and properties at the nanoscale that is of structures less than 100nm (less than a virus size)

Any advance in nanotechnology will be based on Nanomaterials advances

• To sum it up Nanotechnology is a size-based science field which can be summarized as an umbrella term used to define the products, processes and properties at the nanoscale that is of structures less than 100nm (less than a virus size)

• Now switching the talk to nanomedicine, the European science foundation defines Nanomedicine as “The science and technology of diagnosing, treating and preventing disease and traumatic injury, of relieving pain, and of preserving and improving human health, using molecular tools and molecular knowledge of the human body.” From which we can conclude that Nanotechnology is the broad scientific field that encompasses nanomedicine In which it mainly serves to advance the safe and effective use of nanotechnologies to reduce death and suffering from human disease

nanomedicine based for example in• Caner : there is Doxil which is a liposomal based drug carrier with payload

of danuoribince• As for liver disease: pegylated family of drugs (eg. Peg-interferon) which is

based on detoxifying nanotool (peg)• Vivagel is a new topical Hiv drug which is a dendretic based drug.• as for imaging MRI enhancement : there is already (Endorem and gadomer)

which are based on iron supermagnitism and dendrim carrier respectively

• For more information on the principles on which these drugs are based you can referred to our last year presentation in which we discussed these principles in details.

Slide 10.main• Generaly owning to the fact that nanomedicine is a newly rising science the window is still open for developing countries

to pursue .

• the coming years hold a huge hope for Africa, we think that start of something big could take place now, specialy that we have factors that can help us doing so

For example • Human resource huge diversity with abundant resources, the candidate in Africa is of high potential yet healthcare cost

are much lower than many other countries

• Since african development is on the rise and and the general attitude is towords opening to research , it is belived that this scientific field would be easy to implement

• It’s widly known that africa carries the largest medical need around the world and already carries the most spending in

healthcare aid origanizations like the WHO, which will also present a huge opertunity to induce a noticable change with minute advances

• Finally egypt has the leading resources and optimum scientific vantages to take the lead since we are already took our first steps

• So to set this in action there is a number of intiaition factors that need to be supplied and some stratgies that need to be followed ,

• Generally, the facility would be very similar in composition to a molecular biology research facility, with one prominent difference that is the need for Atomic force microscope for the sake of characterizing the nanoparticles, although this technology does not have to be exclusive to the uses of the nanomedicine facility, what is really required is frequent access to the AFM to be able to characterize the particles sensitized, which does not happens on very shot intervals.

• Other than that, different elements of facility will depend on the nature of the onging research, which bring us to the research plan

Slide 12• Our vision for the research plan is of a multidisciplinary

approach, in which the efforts of researchers in medicine physics and chemistry are required.

• As we see we start by defining unmet disease priorities , as you can see on the top of the (list), next step will be to conclude the required function to tackle these diseases such as Dx, Rx.

• Following with aid from physics and chemistry researchs they can help us desigining our expermints and decided on nanomaterial and phenomina that can help us achieve the function

• For example iron and silicon nanoparticls can be recommended for diagnosis functions due to there unique phenomena that allow them to be the best candidate for imaging enhancement

• Providing core scientific training is an essential piece of the puzzle ,

• Which can be details as the Key of success of any lab depends mainly on the scientist core working within, and so providing a core scientific training for physicians and researchers would be essential to ensure a working force that can match the rapid development in this field.

• And so in term of education, we need to introduce undergraduates to the basic sciences used in nanomedicine.

• That includes orientation of undergraduates with the basics of (items) in addition to their ongoing life science study, to increase the awareness of the field and allow interested undergraduates to pursue a career in research.

• Graduates students can tempted to research thru the availability of programs for fresh graduates and more Md/PhD programs.

the need for skilled personals in field of medical informatics is essential both to provide aid in computational science and to try to overcome the problem of communications –which is a universal challenge up till now- thru utilization of modern technologies and construction of an international library that can help synchronize the work between goal-oriented research partners in large medical centers and universities research groups, also its good to mention that that any development in the field on nanomedicine is based on the development of nonmaterial’s (since it’s the precursor for any nanotool or device) , and so communication and building a library for new developments in nonmaterial is essential for the nanomedicine development.

• Applying for grants , tempting investors to invest in nanomedicine , and fund raising projects that can be in the form of the production of commercial products that can be used to fun a parallel research

work of the lab, noting that such field will not only provide better treatment, D but also there will be many commercial benefits by decreasing the expenses of treatment and decreasing morbidity, such brief is essential so we can convince dissen makers to allocate a budget and funds for research and also to keep all parties –including the public - oriented with the ongoing research

•this will not happens unless we can provide balanced information about nanomedicine to differentiate between what is Facts that should be supported and fiction that should we neglect.
