Edition 285 — Friday 17 May 2019
From Mr Trent Citrano, Head of School These week’s edition of Nanohana is a celebration of our 10 Year Anniver-sary. A real accomplishment thanks to the vision and perseverance of Former Chiba Governor, Ms Akiko Domoto - who at a young age as a Japanese student returned from America without any international school options
to uphold her English or global mindset. It is because of not only Ms Domoto but also the hard work and collaboration of so many people over the years to (as G6 Student
Council speaker Rira Tsutsumi so eloquently said) challenge ourselves every day to make the school a better place. I want to extend my personal appreciation and congratulations not only to the teachers and assistants, but also the office staff, Board of Directors & Trustees, local and prefec-tural governments, parents and, of course, our students for supporting MIS on its journey. I am confident that, working together, over the next 10 years and beyond, MIS will con-tinue to be at the forefront of developing contributing, bilingual global citizens. If you missed the MIS 10th Anniversary Ceremony, please enjoy the pictures below as well as on page 6 of this Anniversary Edition of Nanohana.
Thank you all for your support and congratulations on 10 amazing years!

From Mr Anthony Hall, Deputy Head of School
Greetings from MIS. This week, I have the pleasure of celebrating a shining ex-
ample of the academic success of our students. In February 2019, students from
Grades 3 to 5 participated in the International Schools’ Assessment (ISA), a pro-
gramme developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER)
and designed specifically for international schools. The test provides MIS with a
means to compare the academic performance of our students with other interna-
tional school students. What follows are facts about the test:
Around 66,000 students took the tests at 297 international schools in 64 countries.
11,375 students took the Grade 3 tests; 10,377 took the G4 tests; 12,321 took the G5 tests.
For purposes of making comparisons, schools are grouped according to their majority home lan-
guage. MIS was listed as a Group 1 school. Group 1 schools have 15% or less of their pupils whose
native language at home is English.
When looking at the overall results, the MIS school community can be greatly reassured that our
students’ achievements compare very well to all other groups. In all subjects, MIS averages are sig-
nificantly above the averages for other Group 1 schools. In most areas, the MIS results are signifi-
cantly better than the Asian Schools’ averages and the All Schools’ averages. You can see these
results in the chart below. Well done students! You deserve great credit. Should you need any fur-
ther information about our ISA test results, please contact us via your child’s communication book.

Kindergarten News
NANOHANA
From Mrs Ali Haggett, Kindergarten Coordinator
Each class in kindergarten have established a garden in the playground. These gardens allow the children to watch plants grow, admire the shapes and colours of the flowers and observe how plants grow fruit or vegeta-bles. Mr Satterwhite provided the children with an interactive music assembly on Tuesday, with all children and teaching staff involved in a singing game called ‘Let us chase the squirrel’. You can see photos on page 5.
During the weekly assembly, Ms Mochizuki was surprised with a bouquet of flowers to celebrate her 10 year anniversary at the school. There have been many children who have been taught by Ms Mochizuki during these years and she keeps in con-tact with them as they move through the grades. She sets high standards of learning and gives great comfort if a child is need. Thank you Ms Mochizuki for your time, energy and love you give to kindergarten!

G3 Share their Memories In Japanese, G3G children wrote about their most memorable day during Golden Week and then created a quiz based on what they wrote. This week we had student-led quizzes in our classes. The aims were to speak clearly and at the right speed for the audience, to listen carefully and to take notes of the important facts. The students all showed attentive listening and definitely enjoyed taking part in this student-centered, interactive learning experience!
G1Y Live Honestly Last Friday, we were delighted to have the students from G1Y present the first elementary class assembly of the year. The students retold the German folktale, Rumplestiltskin, teaching us to be honest even if it is difficult. They also told per-sonal anecdotes about how they have lived honestly. Finally, as a class the children shared an acrostic poem based on the letters in the word HONESTY. A truly memorable lesson for us all and presented with such confidence!

K2 Students Bake a Celebratory Cake! The children of K2G cooked a birthday cake to celebrate the 10 Year anniver-sary for MIS. They looked at what shape cakes they would need to cook to create the number ten. A rectangle and circle were chosen. Looking at the recipe the children then identified the ingredients that were re-quired to be purchased. A lot of fun was had in the kitchen, cooking and cleaning. Though the best part was eating it!

Kindergarten Students Connect Music and Movement As Miss Ali wrote in her article, the Kindergarten students and staff all enjoyed a very different kind of assembly this week led by Mr. Satterwhite - bringing music and movement to life in a fun, cooperative game!

Collect Bottle Caps to Save Lives! The MIS Eco Club Needs Your Help! The MIS Eco Club has been working on a project and we need your help. We want to collect as many bottle caps as possi-ble. By doing this we can help send polio vaccines to developing countries. The bottle caps that the school collects will be recycled and will also help prevent global warming from happening. We need at least 860 bottle caps to save one child so we need YOUR help to collect as many bottle caps as possible. To collect bottle caps we need to make a few ground rules:
The caps have to be from only pet bottles for beverages.
We will also appreciate it if your caps are not dirty and have no stickers.
We also don’t want you to take caps from random places.
You can collect bottle caps by putting them into plastic bags or paper bags, but we suggest the paper bag because we will recycle them later. If you collect bottle caps over the week we would appreciate it if you could ask your child(ren) to bring them to school so that the Eco Club can collect them on Thursdays every week (but you can bring caps to school any day). Thank you for your cooperation and we hope that MIS can save as many children’s lives as possible and even after their graduation, MIS students can stay global citizens and responsible life-long learners!
