Presidents Report
Over the past 101 Annual General Meetings there has been varied and not always positive results. In recent years we
have produced outstanding financial results and an overall
happiness from members.
This year the turnout of members was a great number and it is great to see this connection and involvement from the
members. Thank you to those who attended the AGM with good member support, it is what makes us different to a
tavern or public facility.
In general business we had a good discussion about the Napier Conference Centre and collectively comprised a strong voice to take to Napier
City Council. I was to attend a meeting at the council as a representative of the Napier RSA. Unfortunately due to the current run of colds and flus going around I
personally could not attend, however Dorothy did go in my place.
Our motion was presented at the meeting where it was acknowledged and tabled.
It would seem that they are not in a position to reinstate the original name, roll of honour or eternal flame. They are looking at creating an honorable memorial and
have taken on board the Napier RSA members’ voice to position any such memorial on Marine Parade. Part of the meeting we also reiterated that there was a strong
need to involve the community as it has felt that the lack in communication is only leading to whispers and rumors which has not been positive at any point. They have
told us that they do intend to hold a public meeting in the near future. This will be the platform to use to make a stand on this important issue
After the meeting we did let them know that we will be informing our members of
any updates or progress as this subject is close to home for us. So for now I would like to say that we have been heard and that we will keep you all up to date as we
can.
I wish to welcome our new Executive Committee, many of this committee have
previously been on our committee or a similar type of board. I have been on The Napier RSA Committee for some 20 years, we have developed into a positive and
progressive committee that work together with our focus on our members and our community.
I want to finish with a congratulations to Team New Zealand for a wonderful victory
over Oracle. It takes great courage and determination to participate and claim victory in the Americas Cup the way that they did. They are a display of a Kiwi spirit
on the international stage. Well done you have made us all proud.

Ladies and Gentlemen it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Napier RSAs 101st AGM.

Addendum to the Presidents Report
As we all know two of our management team have retired from two very important roles, I refer of course to Craig and Bev. However, their successors Dorothy and Kay have already stepped up to the mark and I have no doubt will make their own stamp on this organization.
I would like to say that it has been a privilege to serve you over the last twelve months and to remind you that I have never taken this privilege lightly. During this time we have lost a few members suddenly or due to ill health. Recently a star of the Club Joy Miller passed away and I wish to express how much we still miss her.
You will have read in my report, I wish to make it clear that the RSAs position regarding the Napier War Memorial Conference Centre “RSAs are the Guardians of Remembrance” which means we can hold our ceremonies where no memorials exist. However having said that I believe as a building designed by a Napier Returned Serviceman and Navy person, to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice and was paid through public subscription by the citizens of Napier, therefore mean that before changing things, as the community and public we should have been consulted.
Addendum to the CE’s Report Firstly, I would like to thank the President and Chief Executive for allowing me to address the Members regarding last year’s trading result.
At the risk of repeating myself I will reiterate that the Club business is a tough business to be in. The Napier RSA has been benefited from solid trading over the past 5 years and I am confident the incoming Committee and Managers will do their best to ensure future opportunities and profits are maximized.
If I was offering advice I would suggest the Club remain vibrant and keep members engaged. It is important that the Club adds more and more value to the Membership Card. The market is forever evolving and Members have an increasingly high expectation.
Most of the RSA Membership, and with particular reference to visitors are now engaged on social media. They know what the meal deal was at the Napier RSA last Thursday, and they are updated every week with all Club events and entertainment. The RSA website activity achieves between 3000 - 5000 hits a month depending on the season, many from visiting Members from other Clubs and Tourists from all over the world.
Social Media is, cost effective, immediate, topical, and informative and a call to action that grows sales by increasing the frequency of visits into the Club. The changes to our liquor license last year allows the Napier RSA to access an undeterminable number of Clubs worldwide.
Over the years we have seen many Clubs simply shut their doors and fade into obscurity, Clubs have merged and occupy backrooms in their host club, some clubs have disestablished key management roles and others operate on the basis of fingers crossed from one year to the next.
It is hoped that with sufficient funds generated over the next few years the RSA will continue to provide a better experience for the members within modern and vibrant premises.
I have always felt very proud of the Napier RSA and the small part I have played in its management but it is our ambassadors at the coal face that make the difference. They serve you well, and it is them that I am most proud of and grateful for – thank you
Addendum to the Financial Report
In January when we first met with the RSA Auditors there was an expectation that the Club would achieve a profit circa of $250,000.
Unfortunately the last quarter trading was a disaster and we kept shifting the goal posts to reflect the market trading changes. Unfortunately only trading highlight during this period was the Art Deco Week
The RSA end result was $188k profit, our budget was $172, so we were above budget but below our expectations. Such is the fickle industry we are in.
At the June Auditors meeting Sholto Matthews pointed out some of the achievements throughout the year.
We surpassed budget by approximately $16,000
Our trading bank balances improved by $76,000
Term debt reduced by nearly $220,000
Our assets increased by $56,000
We achieved a positive overall cash flow from trading of $350,741 a nett of 10% of turnover
Bank Balance 31/03/2017 - credit $556,673.00
Term Debt $575,000
Our Members equity is 70%. If the club followed the same trajectory over the next 3 years they would be freehold
This means that the Club and Clubs finances are in good heart and the future is very positive.

The following Notice of Motion was tabled for consideration by the members;
That the RSA Constitution rule 23 (Executive Committee) be altered to read;
The Executive Committee Shall consist of a President, Vice President and six (6) members of the Local Association
Moved: Don Fraser and spoke on reasons and support of the motion:
Reasons are two-fold – Technology has replaced many of the duties previously carried by Executive members and Job Satisfaction can no longer be met for Executives due to the requirement of skilled positions. In the past we have had 10 – 12 sub committees to assist the club needs, we are now only operating 4 or 5 which has reduce the need for 8 executive members
Seconded: Brian Strong and invited to speak, he agreed with the motion and reasons given by Don and moves that the numbers be cut back to 6.
Questions to the motion:
Ron Rowe spoke for the motion, stating that he was part of the RNZRSA board that had reduced their numbers to 6 to allow for the board to be more effective. Other organisations have also done the same. If required other sub committees can be formed to assist with other duties.
Robbie McNaught spoke against the motion, stating that the committee offers a stronger hand with more people. Have been involved with smaller clubs where a bigger committee was good. In my opinion was better for the club
Denise Atkins spoke for the motion, stating that six was an ideal number and that having too many people can’t make the decisions. Explained that has been on many committees
Paul Cavanagh spoke for the motion, stating was on Napier RSA committee in the past. Agrees there is not enough work for eight and that six would be sufficient.
Denise Marshall asked when this motion would take effect
Don Fraser replied 2018/2019
Jan Shipman spoke for the motion, stated that she was 7 years on the committee and agreed there are not enough jobs.
Kathryn Wakelin spoke against the motion, stating that we should be accepting any / all help for people who wish to be on the committee.
Don Fraser stated that sub committees have diminished
Motion called to vote by show of hands, carried by the majority approximately 10 against.
Ron Rowe invited to speak:
Ron Rowe presented Mark Goodson partner of Willis Legal a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Napier RSA and Centenary Legacy Trust for his contribution for both Napier RSA and the Centenary Legacy Trust. Applause given. Mark responded and thanked the Club.
General Business:
o Bill Williams came to the front of the room asking – what discussions have there been on the War Memorial? Who has decided re the changes to the name, roll of honour and eternal flame? What consultation has there been with the RSA?
o John Purcell replied – the Napier City Council made no consultation with the RSA prior to the Memorial being moved. Our stand is that there should have been public consultation. There is a meeting with the Napier City Council next week.
o Bill Williams moved a motion be taken to the Napier City Council “That all members of the Napier RSA support a return of the memorial to its rightful place.
o Alva McAdam stated that the name War Memorial be restored back into the title of the building o Margret Davies asked what Johns thought on where the memorial will or can go. o John Purcell replied with there is a meeting this week with the Napier City Council that may be
showing different options or sites. I will pass onto to the Council members the discussion we are having today.
o Graham Barclay asked if John had consulted with Stuart Nash o John Purcell replied no o Graham Barclay stated that the Napier City Council originally said that the memorial would stay
as part of the upgrade, and their deception was now not appropriate. o Paul Cavanagh asked to tell the council to keep the memorial on the Marine Parade o John Purcell replied that he would pass that onto the council.
Motion put forward:
“The members of the Napier RSA have asked that the name of the Napier War Memorial be reinstated. Also that the eternal flame and roll of honour be returned to its rightful (original) place – in the Napier War Memorial Centre. If this is not practical they have also expressed that if a new memorial site was to be considered that the memorial be situated on Marine Parade.

Ron Rowe spoke on the Centenary Legacy Trust and informed members that with this years AGM report there is a single sheet of paper asking for contributions to the trust. Each contribution was entered into a record of Legacy, giving examples of donations made prior to AGM eg. A lady had donated in the name of her late husband and her late mother. Also that some of the committee members had also contributed to the trust. There is no set amount, and all contributions are much appreciated. Donations and completed sheets can be handed to the staff at the bar or reception.
Tom Hammond spoke of the success of the team of staff at the club and congratulated them on there hard work and good service.
Susan Palmer stated that she thought there was a breach in confidentiality when she submitted a complaint at the bar to which she had seen a staff member read and share with other staff member. She said that she now knows where the complaint box is situated and asked if signage could be displayed to let other people know.

for the benefit of our disadvantaged youth but also for our needy health services – so everyone

The concept of returning talented young people to their communities to help bring about change in
dealing with issues such as staff shortages and retention in rural Hawke’s Bay, to ensure equity in
Maori and Pacific staff representation, as well as bringing about better awareness of the range and
depth of careers available in the health service. What a wonderful Legacy and Gift… all members
can take significant PRIDE in your legacy.

Tui Brewery Trip on 22nd June well supported and the Taranaki Trip in
November is attracting a lot of interest. The President’s visit to New
Plymouth was successful.
One new member welcomed in May and the July meeting will see a member sharing her recent overseas adventures
The Adjunct is going very well considering the cold weather
Focus is now on National Tournament in June, unfortunately the same
weekend as the Napier RSA’s AGM

Thursday night’ dash well attended. The pleasing aspect is that a lot of Junior Members are playing which ensures the future of Cue Sports.

3. Joy Miller Fun Day to be discussed at the July meeting 4. Sunday Lunches. – The CE outlined the new Safety & Health
regulation and how they impacted on untrained staff using the
kitchen to prepare and cook food for the $4.00 Sunday Lunch.
After Dorothy’s summation every member spoke their views and
the consensus of the meeting was that “Due to recent Health & Safety concerns the Adjunct representatives, present at the
meeting, are in favour of changes to the Sunday Lunch
procedures”
CLOSING The meeting closed at 11:05am. With a vote of thanks to the Chair.
The next meeting will be held on Saturday 8th. July 2017 at 10:00am

If anyone can take it up, let me know This may be of interest to some of you. A friend of mine has two tickets in a corporate box for the final Lions Test in Wellington on 1st July. He paid $400 each, but he didn't realise when he bought them months ago that it was going to be the same day as his wedding. If you are interested, he is looking for someone to take his place! It's at the Registry Office, Princes Street, Dunedin 4.30pm. The bride's name is Nicole -- she's 5'8", great tits, about 9 stone (57 Kg), quite pretty, has her own income and is a really good cook.
A round of golf?
********** Four married guys go golfing and Sunday. During the 3rd hole the following conversation ensued: First Guy: “Man, you have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out golfing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I will paint every room in the house next weekend.” Second Guy: “That’s nothing, I had to promise my wife that I will build her a new deck for the pool.” Third Guy: “Man, you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I will remodel the kitchen for her.” They continue to play the hole when they realized that the fourth guy has not said a word. So they ask him. “You haven’t said anything about what you had to do to be able to come golfing this weekend. What’s the deal?” Fourth Guy: “I don’t want to talk about it. Let’s just say that the foundation for the new house is being poured next Tuesday.”

A man met a beautiful lady and he decided he wanted to marry her right away. She said, “But we don’t know anything about each other.” He said, “That’s all right, we’ll learn about each other as we go along.” So she consented, and they were married, and went on a honeymoon to a very nice resort. One morning they were lying by the pool, when he got up off of his towel, climbed up to the 10 metre board and did a two and a half tuck gainer, this followed by a three rotations in jackknife position, where he straightened out and cut the water like a knife. After a few more demonstrations, he came back and laid down on the towel. She said, “That was incredible!” He said, “I used to be an Olympic diving champion. You see, I told you we’d learn more about ourselves as we went along.” So she got up, jumped in the pool, and started doing laps. After about thirty laps she climbed back out and laid down on her towel hardly out of breath. “That was incredible! Were you an Olympic endurance swimmer?” he said “No,” she said, “I was a hooker in Venice and I worked both sides of the canal… I agree with you that we’d learn more about ourselves as we went along.”
