Issue 11 Week 2 Term 3 Tuesday 30th July 2019

Term 2 has started in a very busy but positive way. Our staff engaged in worthwhile pro-

fessional learning on Monday 22 July, with the focus on restorative practice in the class-

room. The day was presented by Margaret Thorsborne who is a highly engaging pre-

senter who specialises in developing relational schools where the concepts of account-

ability, responsibility and empathy are modelled by all members of the school commu-

nity. Teachers will also continue work in their Teacher Learning Communities (TLC’s) this

term as we strive to further develop our skills, trial new techniques and support and

mentor each other.

This term we have welcomed some new staff to our school. Ms Andree Bellamy joins us

as our new Aboriginal Learning Centre Co-ordinator. Our Aboriginal Learning Centre will

operate in conjunction with our existing Intervention Centre but with a more specific

focus on supporting our Aboriginal students to achieve their educational goals. Justine

McKellar and Mark Sykes have also joined our Learning Support Team as School Learn-

ing Support Officers (SLSO’s) in a casual capacity at this stage. Welcome to Narrandera

High Andree, Justine and Mark.

We are looking forward to celebrating our school NAIDOC Day tomorrow, July 31. Stu-

dents will be participating in alternative activities from period 3 onwards. These activi-

ties will involve Aboriginal dance, art and games. There will also be a BBQ lunch that will

include a selection of traditional Aboriginal food for students to try. Members of NSW

Police will also speak about careers in policing and the indigenous careers program.

Our next Hands on High School night will be held next week, Tuesday 6 August, com-

mencing at 7pm in the library. We are hoping to have a significant number of families in

attendance to learn more about our school and to allow students to have a taste of

what life as a student of Narrandera High School is like.

I would also like to wish our Kids Rapt on Performing (KROP) singers and dancers all the

best as they prepare for their performance at the Griffith Regional Theatre next week

on Thursday August 8 and Friday August 9. KROP is a creative and performing arts ex-

travaganza giving more than 500 students from Riverina public schools an opportunity

to shine on stage. It is wonderful to have Narrandera High School involved in this show-

case for the first time ever.

Special congratulations should also be extended to the students who graduated from

the NSW Rural Fire Service Secondary School Cadets program last Friday. Thank you to

Mr Brett Ireland who co-ordinated and organised this opportunity for our students and

Mr Lewis Saunders and Mr Alex Dean for their assistance during this ten week program.

A reminder that our Stage 6 2020 Information Evening will be held tonight, July 30 in the

library commencing at 7pm. It is important that students in Years 10 and 11 and a family

member / carer attend if possible. A light supper will also be provided.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY

Year 10 Wetlands Fieldwork Excursion

On Friday 26th July, all of Year 10 took part in an excursion to Narrandera Wetlands.

The excursion was part of a unit of work on environmental change and management.

Fieldwork is a compulsory component of the NSW Geography course and is designed

to teach students valuable skills that they can use in the future.

The wetlands excursion was organised in cooperation with Narrandera Landcare

(Nella Smith and Kath) and we are extremely grateful for their support.

Students had the opportunity to find out how and why the wetlands were created,

how the wetlands functions and their impact on the community. Students also had

opportunities to conduct soil and water testing, mini-beast identification, plant identifi-

cation and weather observations.

For those that did not order photos, it is still not too late. (Your child’s photo was taken

regardless). Year Advisors will hand out a unique code for those that didn’t order. You

will be able to do this on-line.

**UPDATE** - There was an error in the printing of the student photo booklets. A number

of rows of children’s names where missed from the group shot. These are being reprint-

ed and will be sent back to school to hand out.

Three runners represented Riverina at the recent State Cross Country held at Eastern

Creek in Sydney.

Connor Smith, Jasmine Gilmour and Ky Bloomfield represented Narrandera High

School as part of the Riverina team.

Ky finished 69th, Jasmine 73rd and Connor 71st with a PB.

Well done!!
