What is Liter of light ?

We consider it as a pleasure to introduce ourselves as the team of Liter of Light India.

Living in the era of advanced science and technology, poverty is still prominent. There

are millions of people in the world who still go to bed hungry, walk miles to get a cup

ofwater, die due to lack of proper medication. In spite of years of modernization, it is

sorrowful that we have failed to bring the change in the lives of poor people.

For the same cause, Liter of Light India came into existence, focusing on the low-cost

energy resources. Our aim is to introduce a sustainable and reliable source of energy to

the unprivileged communities. One among these sources is Liter of Light, which is

constructed with the help of a plastic bottle, water and bleach. It is a great innovation

from the students of MIT and implemented by My Shelter Foundation, Philippines.

Liter of Light is also a solution to various environmental challenges since it adopts the

concept of up recycling. It is a zero-carbon emission solar lighting project, using

appropriate technologies that are highly replicable and sustainable. They can be easily

built with simple carpentry skills and little knowledge.

Solar Bottle Bulb uses appropriate technologies that are highly replicable and sustainable.

The materials used are found easily in the poorest neighborhood. They can be easily built

with simple carpentry skills and little knowledge about the solar bulb. This simple

mechanism of installing Solar Bottle Bulb made the expansion of movement easy.

The Solar Bottle Bulb is installed in the roof of homes with the purpose of refracting

sunlight in order to light up a room. . After being filled with water and bleach, the bottle

is pushed through a steel sheet that serves as a metal lock to prevent it from slipping. It is

then embedded into a corrugated iron roof. A small part of the bottle is left outside while

the rest of it protrudes into the house. the bottle bulb makes use of everyday materials to

produce light equivalent to a 55W bulb!

What is Liter of Light in India?

We are currently working in collaboration with the Myshelter Foundation Philippines

under the guidance of its founder and the global Liter of Light leader Illac Diaz.

We are a group of under graduate students working to install liter of lights or solar blubs

all over India. Our motto is to lighten up the most unprivileged communities by installing

solar bulbs. Introducing such low-cost technologies we aim to glow about one million

homes throughout India.

Our Plans for Liter of Light India :

We have already conducted workshops in Major cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi.

We are planning to spread this technology to maximum no of people and by conducting

workshops and by educating them about Liter of Light.

We are also forming a global Liter of Light team in different cities. With this aim we

conducted a successful workshop in Kolkata with the help of our active volunteers.
