How to make Nastran run faster Few tricks: Increase the amount of memory that the solver uses (use the MEM and SMEM Nastran commands) Reduce the amount of data written to scratch using the scratch=mini (the reduced size database can be used for data recovery restarts only) check the maxdsiz on your machine (HP) and increase it. Nastran on hpux can allo cate upto 8 gb unless you installed a 32 bit executable. MSC is also able to del iver an executable for 2005r3 and md which can do more the 8gb - be careful with the system cells that apply to Lanczos. If used incorrectly, the solution will slow down, not speed up. This would be quite upsetting when your in a time crunc h, so do this when you absorb the time hits. Additional sys193=0 and sys199=0 also helped for normal modes runs (for Lanczos could not work). 193 or DISKSAVE (the ASCII name.) This cell controls the saving of matrix/vector multiply and adds results. On a CRAY or NEC this is set to save (NASTRAN DISKSA VE=0). All other systems it is turned off. Note that this requires using disk sp ace so if you re already straining your scratch space, this might not be useful. 199 or MASSBUF (the ASCII name.) This cell controls the number of buffers used t o store the mass matrix in memory. The default is 1. Simple and effective speedup is done with two settings: memory and BUFFSIZE. Note that asking for too much memory will actually slow you down slightly. Use t he estimate program and also note the memory information produced by the DECOMP module. This can be found in the .f04 file. BUFFSIZE should be set to the disk format if possible. So if on a unix platform you formatted the disk to I/O and store in 64k chunks, then a BUFFSIZE=65537 is a logical choice.
