The world of Social Work is transforming with the changing landscape of behavioral health care services. Attend NASW Virginia’s 2016 Annual Conference “Inspiration, Innovation, Determination” to prepare for upcoming changes affecting your practice.

Guiding the Arc of our Self-Organizing Development (3 CE Hours) David Alter, PhD

We arrive in the world possessed of more nerve cells than we will have over the rest of our lives. Yet, even as the massive pruning of neurons occurs, we are endowed with the capacity

to grow and develop along an infinite number of possible directions in life. Most importantly, we remain capable of influencing the developmental path our lives follow specifically because

of the intersection of our environment and our in-born neuroplastic potential.

This half-day program will provide attendees with an overview of the development of our social brain and the types of experiences that shape and re-shape our ability to express the

highest abilities our dynamic and evolving selves are capable of expressing. The morning session will emphasize child to mid-life development. Using didactic material engagingly

presented and combining this with small and large group discussion, this session is designed to leave participants with a clearer view of our human potential and practical methods of

accessing and developing it to its fullest.

David Alter, PhD, is a clinical psychologist with thirty years of experience integrating health psychology, neuropsychology, and clinical hypnosis in his work. He is in demand as a speaker,

teacher and trainer, offering talks, workshops and retreats to general and professional audiences. He is a co-founder of Partners in Healing, a center for holistic health in Minneapolis, MN and the founder of the Institute for Brain-Behavior Integration, also in Minneapolis, where

his focus is on applying integrative neuroscience to enhance people’s lives.

Trust & Value: How Social Workers Can Thrive in Today’s Fast-Paced Environment (6 CE Hours)Jeff Beals

In order to be effective in their work and advance in their careers, social workers must realize that talent, professional competency and hard work are simply not enough. You need to become a master at building strong professional relationships while navigating complex bureaucracies. In this humorous and entertaining presentation, international speaker Jeff Beals will show you how to build trusting relationships while determining what people genuinely value. You will learn how to ask probing questions allowing you to become an “opportunity detective.” You will learn how to find your unique “story” and be ready to communicate it. At the end of the presentation, you will be ready to take charge of your career, have more influence in your organization and be better equipped to improve the lives of the people you serve.

Jeff Beals is an international speaker and award-winning author of two business books. A member of the National Speakers Association, he delivers keynotes and workshops worldwide. He has published more than 300 articles and writes the bi-weekly “Business Motivation Blast” which has 10,000 subscribers. He has been quoted in Investor’s Business Daily, Men’s Health, New York Times Online, Chicago Tribune and USA Today. Jeff is executive vice president of marketing for a family of commercial real estate firms that operate in six states. He holds Master of Arts and Bachelor of Journalism degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
