Dates & Deadlines

January With a new year upon us, now is the perfect time to begin setting and achieving YOUR goals in 4-H! Here are some tips!

When setting goals, look at recent success instead of comparing yourself to others or the way you used to be.

Take small steps. If you have a large goal you want to accomplish, break it down into little pieces that you can finish. Working one step at a time, you’ll come closer to reaching your larger goal.

Moving ahead one small step at a time from where you are right now. Taking one small step at a time will provide more changes for success. Success will make you feel more confident to handle the next step forward.

Remember that most people expect too much and set their goals too high. Scale your goals back from what you initially plan.

Ask people you trust for their help about whether your goals are reasonable.

Whose goal is it anyway? Check in with yourself to be sure the goal is something you want. Often, people feel pressured to reach other people’s goals for them. Balance what you want and what others expect of you.

Remember that some goals are too big for one person to handle on their own. They may take the help of lots of people. Realize your limitations and ask for help reaching goals when you need it.

Build on your strengths. Don’t lose sight of the good things you have to offer. Learn to recognize what you do best, and use those strengths to help you get what you want. Ask for help with the things you don’t do as well on.

Congratulate yourself and give yourself credit for small successes.

Keep in mind that no one is perfect. Remember that no one can reach all the goals that they set. You may find you set a goal too high. If you don’t reach a goal, re-evaluate your progress and try to decide if the goal was reasonable. It is wasn’t try to set a new, more reasonable goal. The try again!

Remember that setting reasonable goals increases the changes of getting what you want.

Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" the day before Ash Wednesday when Lent, the traditional period of penance that precedes Easter, begins. The origin of "Fat Tuesday" is believed to have come from a pagan custom of parading a fat ox through the streets before a period of fasting. Masks have been part of human celebrations since primitive man picked up an animal head and put it on to act out the hunt prior to sharing in the bounty of the kill. Their use grew from these simple celebratory stories to the telling of stories of creation, ritual practice, use in theater, opera and dance. Masks tend to carry within them the stories of the cultures from which they originate as well as reflect the tone and theme of the ritual celebrations of life for which they are used. The masks of Mardi

Gras carry this history as well. WE WANT YOU TO DESIGN A MASK! Basic rules: (1) must be able to wear it (2) must incorporate 4-H, Louisiana, & Mardi Gras! For a complete list of contest rules contact Mrs. Gwen at the 4-H Office. Entries are due to the 4-H Office on Friday, February 14.

SET is a three letter word that means a lot to me. Science, Engineering and Technology have become my life. My name is Rachel Dickson and I am 17 years old. I am a senior at St. Mary's School. I am a member of the Lady Tigers basketball team and a member in many of our clubs. I have been an active member of 4-H for 9 years and I have been a member of the Louisiana State 4-H SET Board for three years. My favorite experience with SET has been helping with the videography track at LOST Camp the past three years. During my first year at LOST as a camper, I participat-

ed in the track and had the opportunity to learn how to film and edit a short movie. Then, as a board member two years ago, I volunteered to teach this track in order to keep it from being taken out of our camp for that year. Since teaching the track, I have had two years of experience as one of the counselors helping with it, and I have learned so much about video editing and movie making. What keeps me involved with 4-H is the people I have met. I have made so many connections and friends during my time as a member of 4-H. 4-H has become a passion of mine. I love the opportunities it gives me to get involved in my school, community, state, nation and world. This year, as President of the SET Board, I am looking forward to being able to use the skills I have learned to help promote our board through technology. Our board members helped to put on a camp this past fall for military kids from all over the state. We got to make marker robots, teach the kids about wildlife, and made a bit of a mess in the kitchen making marshmallows. In the spring each year the SET Board does some type of service learning project. This year we are using the state service learning focus of military. We are planning to have a military family fun day in April. The families can come out and do fun activities, and at the end of the day, they will be able to take a backpack with some cool SET related experiments that they can do at home. Each member of our board also does some sort of parish project during the year so that their home parish gets a special taste of what SET really is. This year in Natchitoches Parish, we will be putting on SciEnTech Adventures, which will be a day camp in March. Those students who participate will have the opportunity to participate in stations with activities related to SET. We are looking ahead to a great year of 4-H and I am so very excited for all of our upcoming activities and hope to see you all there.
