Health literacy occurs when the complexities and demands of the health care system are consistent the skills and abilities of the consumer. Unfortunately, the demands and complexity of the health communications far outweigh the consumers’ skills and abilities. As a consequence, most people cannot access, understand and appropriately use health information provided to them.

Recent events have created the health literacy perfect storm. Health literacy has now become a major focus in today’s health care system. We are in a consumer-driven health care environment where consumers are increasing exposed to health communications that they do not understand. Health literacy concerns have moved from the physician office to national health policy Insurers are being asked to describe how they are making health communications easier to access, understand and use by: Consumer and customer groups Federal and state insurance groups URAC, HEDIS and CAHPS (AHRQ) Health literacy is being increasingly tied to health care quality and affordability issues Why the big interest and just what is health literacy: Transition: The new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act …..
