NATIONAL CLEAN UP WEEK The Maintenance and Transport

Green Teams The Maintenance and Transport Green Teams celebrated National Clean-up week for their

Environmental Calendar Event this year. The teams decided that they were going to take up the HUGE task of cleaning up the mess caused by illegal dumping of waste under the ZIPSLIDE.

Now this wasn't an easy task because of the different types of waste that needed to be handled and required a lot of planning and a little help from a few friends. An invite was sent out to staff and local municipality to lend a helping hand and do their part towards saving our environment. NINE teams totalling 63 people came on board and dedicated their time and energy towards

the clean-up.

This is the eyesore mess that has been caused by illegal dumping of waste around the 8 areas identified on the Google Earth image depicted below. Illegal dumping is an ongoing and highly visible problem, especially in the area under the Zip Slide which is used by many of our guests.

The War on Waste

The teams proceeded to do the job at hand and picked up all the waste and litter around the various site that had been marked out. It took them 2 full hours to complete the job de-spite the blazing sun.

Ipopa started on Friday morning and collected 60 bags of waste from behind the police station, Sun Village and on the Ledig Road, which was donated to Mogwase Waste Man-agement, the local SMME so that they to make a small profit from the recyclables. They continued until 15th August and added another 105 bags their list. Totalling 165 bags!!

The Front End Loader was also used to pick up the massive load of waste in the site marked as SITE 2 on the map next to the dam. Pictures taken at: Site 2,

Great Team Work Displayed Great team work was displayed by the teams when they formed a line-chain pulling the very heavy bag of waste from one of the dumping areas. This just goes to show that by working together we can achieve more. In the true spirit of Letsema

Site 7: The bag was so heavy that it required a lot of strength and energy to pull it up

The ladies also joined in o help show-ing that this was truly a joined venture.

Finally the bag gets pulled up suc-cessfully

The Achievements of the day!

Two hours later, after the hard work and dedication shown by the teams in their clean-up efforts this is what some of the sites looked like.

The End of the Day

We also came across this old man who had seen us cleaning up when he was cycling past. He came and showed us how he had upgraded his bicycle with recycled goods, which included that of a radio.

The total weight of waste in 25 bulk bags amounted to 2000kg’s. The 165 bags from Ipopa were not weighed however would be in the region of 1320kg.

Bringing the total to 3320kg

Further to this, Transport used a Front End Loader to level an area around a small dam where lots of building rubble was dumped historically.

All non-recyclable waste dumped on the landfill site

The waste was carried with the PWR Box Lorry

Disposing all the waste on Sun City Landfill site

The waste is gathered from all the clean-up sites

A sincere thank you to all those who participated especially: Ipopa for supplying extra staff for the duration of the Clean Up Week,

Staff Housing for encouraging the children to partake in this initiative and

Mogwase Local Municipality and Mogwase Recyclers for their assistance

A special thank you to ANGELA HORN for all her arrangements to ensure the event took place without a hitch!

Illegal dumping of waste poses a threat to the environment and human health. Illegal

dumps can be easily accessible to people, particularly our children, who can be at risk to

chemicals (fluids or dust) or get hurt from nails and sharp edged materials. Illegal dumps

also attract all kinds of rodents and insects. Most of the waste that is illegally dumped can

be recycled. It is everyone's responsibility to stop illegal dumping and we encourage our

staff and community at large to come together and work together to finding permanent solu-

tions to this problem. DON’T TRASH OUR EARTH!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU SUN CITY!
