The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) gives coaches the skills and tools to excel and to instill confidence in their athletes in over 60 sports, including Olympic Weightlifting. The NCCP program has been identified as a world leader in coach education, and it is also the largest continuing education program in Canada.
In the sport of weightlifting, the NCCP Certification process helps prepare a coach to take an athlete to a weightlifting competition, while the instructional stream prepares an individual to organize and deliver a group weightlifting cross-training program. In Alberta, in order to coach an athlete at a provincially sanctioned event, a coach must be certified as an NCCP weightlifting coach to assist in the warm-up area.
The first step in becoming certified is to complete the NCCP Competition Introduction (or Instructor Beginner) Workshop, a split between learning the theoretical concepts behind coaching weightlifting, as well as hands-on experience performing and coaching the Snatch and Clean & Jerk will be involved in the workshops.
The NCCP certification course requires completion of a two-day workshop, hands-on experience working with athletes as well as a competency-based evaluation. Michael Souster of Peak Power Sport Development has been involved in the sport of weightlifting for the past 25 years in the area of administration, coaching, refereeing and competing as an athlete. Michael is one of two Master Coach Developers in Alberta for the National Coaching Certification Program and has been involved both provincially and nationally developing coaches for the past twelve years.

TRAINED vs. CERTIFIED
The NCCP model distinguishes between training and certification. Coaches can participate in training opportunities to acquire or refine the skills and knowledge required for a particular coaching context (i.e. Competition-Introduction) as defined by the sport and be considered “trained”.
To become “certified” in a coaching context, coaches must be evaluated on their demonstrated ability to perform within that context in areas such as program design, practice planning, performance analysis, program management, ethical coaching, support to participants during training, and support to participants in competition.
Certified coaches enjoy the credibility of the sporting community and of the athletes they coach because they have been observed and evaluated “doing” what is required of them as a competent coach in their sport. They are recognized as meeting or exceeding the high standards embraced by more than 60 national sport organizations in Canada. Fostering confidence at all levels of sport, certification is a benefit shared by parents, athletes, sport organizations, and our communities.
Once you complete multi-sport modules “Planning a Practice, Nutrition, and Making Ethical Decisions” you become “trained”. Once NCCP Trained you can assist another NCCP Certified Coach in the back room.
