Measuring Data Centre Efficiency

A. Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)

B. Data Centre Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE)

Measuring Data Centre Efficiency

A. Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)

PUE = Total Facility Power / IT Equipment Power

– PUE is a ratio

– Closer to 1, the better

Example -

PUE = 200 kW / 110 kW

PUE = 1.81

Measuring Data Centre Efficiency

A. Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) B. Data Centre Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE) DCiE = (IT equipment power) / (Total facility power) x 100 - DCiE is a percentage - Closer to 100%, the better Example – DCiE = 110 kW / 200 kW x 100 DCiE = 55%

5 Steps To Reduce Your Power Bills

1. Virtualization

Page 12: National Computer Board - Green IT Seminar

5 Steps To Reduce Your Power Bills

1. Virtualization

2. Use high efficiency UPS

Example - A 90% efficient UPS load will be using 90 kW while demanding 100 kW. This means 10 kW is lost energy or 87,600 kWh of lost energy per year. At utility rate of Rs. 6/kWh, this means annual loss of Rs. 525,600. Plus extras cooling cost which is 33% of lost kW.
