of simplest single celled organism to the complexity of human brain.

Advances and breakthroughs in Biology have a huge impact on the

living beings including human. The Science of Biology shapes

everything – from Agriculture to Psychology. Like most sciences, in

last few decades many breakthroughs have been witnesseddue to

rapid advances in technology. These developments in Biological

Sciences complemented by information technology have been

helping human health, welfare and economic development.

However, the anthropogenic interference in the environment has

resulted in unforeseen changes in global climatic pattern which is

threatening animal, plant and human life.

Researches in various fields of Biological Sciences like

Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, Genetics,

Environmental Biology, Genetic Engineering, Gene Therapy and

Bioinformatics have led to tremendous changes in human

civilization as well as the maintenance of biological diversity and

sustainable development.

Keeping these facts in mind, The School of Life Sciences,

Sambalpur University, Odisha, India, 768019, is organising a

National Conference on “Recent Advances in Biological Sciences”.

The aim of the conference is to provide a platform for scientists,

academicians and researchers from different Universities, Industries

and Institutes across the country to share their research output for the

benefit of scientific community as a whole and this would contribute

to learn more about fundamentals of Biological Sciences as well as

applied aspects and it may help to a larger extent to the community in

general.

The city of Sambalpur is one of the oldest cities located in the

bank of River Mahanadi Sambalpur is famous for Sambalpuri

sarees, Sambalpuri dance, song and Hirakud Dam.

The world famous Hirakud Dam built across the River Mahanadi

is located 5 Km away from University campus and is a major tourist

attraction. The dam is world's largest earten dam and is one of the

longest dams in the world.

Samaleswari Temple is another important tourist place located just

15 Km from University campus on bank of the river Mahanadi.

Sambalpur owes its name to Goddess Samaleswari. The temple is

of Sandhara order. This kalinga architecture is built of a kind of

stone durable as granite, cemented with lime mortar.

MaaGhanteswari Temple is another tourist place situated on the

bank of River Mahanadi and is 20 Kmaway from University. As the

name suggests there are bells everywhere. A large number of

pilgrims from across the state visit the temple. It is known as the

'lighthouse without light', built by the early sailors, for whom the

bells served as warning against heavy winds.

Huma Temple is the only leaning temple in the world, which is

situated at Huma, a village on the bank of River Mahanadi, 23 Km

south of Sambalpur City. It is unknown whether the leaning is by

design or from other reasons. While the edifice leans, the pinnacle

of the temple is perpendicular to the ground.
