SCMS joins hands with Kochi Corporation for ‘Water Policy’ As part of the Mission Kochi 2015, an initiative of the Corporation, the Centre for Sustainable Water Technology and Management (CSWTM) at SCMS School of Engineering and Technology (SSET) has been selected by the Kochi Municipal Corporation for developing a water policy for the city. This is the first time ever in India that a local self government is developing its own local water policy under the purview of the National and State water policies. This water policy project is one among the few projects that Kochi Corporation has enlisted under ‘fast track projects’ category and was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mr. Oommen Chandy on 25 August, 2014. The water policy will act as guidelines for the effective utilization of water resource in the city and will help the corporation to plan and implement projects providing sustainable solutions to unique water issues in the city. A paper titled on " Measuring supply chain performance in selected Engineering Industry" has been published in International Journal of Business and Administration Research Review (IJBARR), Volume 2, Issue 5, April-June 2014". The students attended a personality development programme during the period from August 11 to 31. The resource persons were Mr.Mahesh Nazare and Prakash Almeda from Red. India Limited, Mumbai. The event was supported under “Building Capacities for Consultancy Development & Knowledge Management with Partner Institution (KMPI)” Programme of Consultancy Development Centre (CDC), an autonomous Institution of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) of Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. SCMS is the Knowledge ‘Management Partner Institute’ of CDC. The conference was designed for academicians, researchers, IT professionals, consultants and participants from the corporate to discuss the emerging practices in Knowledge Management domain. German Solutions to Indian Challenges The 2nd Indian – German Water Partnership summit will be held on th 6 October 2014 at the Taj Gateway Hotel Kochi in association with SCMS School of Engineering and Technology and Kochi Corporation. Mr. Oommen Chandy, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Kerala will inaugurate the summit. GWP is a consortium of 350 German companies working on various aspects of water technologies. The water related activities of SCMS under the Centre for Sustainable Water Technology and Management (CSWTM) was caught the attention several companies who are members of GWP. They have decided to collaborate with CSWTM in order to fine tune the outstanding German technology on water to be ideally standardized for Indian local conditions for solving the water related problems in the Country. Dr. G P C Nayar, Chairman, SCMS Group will preside over the meeting. H.E. Jörn Rohde, Consul General of Germany in Bangalore will deliver the key note address. Mr Tony Chammany, Mayor, Kochi Corporation, Friedrich Barth, Managing Director GWP, Mr Hibi Eden, M.L.A., Prof. M. Mr. Ralf Heilmann and Mr. Marius Dietmann from Germany are visiting SSET for 4 months as part of the student exchange programme between University of Applied Sciences Ravensburg-Weingarten and SSET. During their stay at SSET they will actively participate in the ongoing projects of CSWTM like development of Water policy for Cochin Corporation, electro dialysis desalination, Green Audit, German Water Partnership Programme etc.

Meanwhile the students of M.Tech Environmental Engineering Department from SCMS Engineering College has reached at University of Applied Sciences Ravensburg-Weingarten, Germany as part of the Students Exchange Programme for a duration of two months.

SCMS Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology Research and Development (SIBB R&D) and Kaipuzha Coconut Producer Company Limited, Kollam has signed a one year MOA. As per this, Neera products – Neera drink, Neera honey and Neera sugar developed by SCMS will be marketed by the company in the State. Dr.Pradip P.Thevannoor, Vice President, SCMS Group and Mr.Jayamohan, M.D, Kaipuzha Coconut Producer Company jointly signed the agreement at SCMS campus, Kalamassery. Prof. P.C.Pillai, Group Director, SCMS, Dr.C.Mohankumar, Director, SIBB R&D and Mr. Shajahan, Chairman, Kaipuzha Coconut Producer Company were present on the occasion.

T h e f i r s t N e e r a processing pilot plant in the private sector in the country will be c o m m i s s i o n e d i n September, 2014. It is a successful initiative of SCMS Institute of Bioscience and Bio-technology Research

and Development (SIBB R&D), a member of SCMS Group of Educational Institutions. The State Government has granted permission for one year for the production of Neera in association with Coconut Development Board, Government of India. The project has successfully full-filled its objectives using financial aid from the C.D.B. The State Excise Department has also released NOC to tap Neera from 250 coconut trees in Ernakulam District. SCMS research institute is the first institution in the private sector in the country in developing “Coconut Neera drink” and its add-on products like “Neera honey,” “Neera sugar,” and “Kera Nutri Vita,” a highly nutritious protein powder ‘for the infant and the old.’ The plant is located at Vidya Nagar near Cusat, South Kalamasery at Ernakalum District. ‘The production capacity of the plant will be 1000 liters per day of Neera drink and bi-products. The latest technology well ensures that the functions of the machineries will be highly hygienic.

A one day seminar on “Novel exposures of Biotechnology and its thallied areas” has been conducted on August 8 2014 at SCMS

south Kalamassery campus. The objective of the programme was to provide a clear awareness to graduate students and parents about the need for studying M.Sc Biotechnology and its job opportunities in the areas of clinical and molecular diagnosis of diseases, designing and production of drugs, new tissue implants and tissue engineering, production of nutraceuticals, transgenic crops, recombinant therapeutic proteins, biofuels and other novel biotech products.
