    NFHS-1: systematic stratified sample of

    households

    2 stages in Rural areas: selection of villagesfollowed by households.

    3 stages in Urban areas: selection of cities or

    towns, followed by urban blocks and finally

    households.

    Provided crucial information for understandingIndias HIV epidemic.(NFHS 3)

    Spurred the Government of India andinternational agencies to greatly reducethe official estimate of Indians living with HIVfrom more than 5 million persons to 2.47million.

    Almost two-thirds of married women dontknow that condoms prevent HIV.
