Membership News
For the past two years, the National HERC Advisory Board has named new regional HERC development as its top
strategic priority. Assisting HERCs form in new regions helps HERC in several key ways, including: increased visibility of
the HERC jobs websites and member institution job opportunities with jobseekers by growing the brand; increased
resources to allocate for national and disciplinary advertising, attendance at disciplinary and diversity conferences; and
gaining additional thought leaders and collaborators on the National HERC Advisory Board; to name a few. The National
HERC office has made significant progress in this area and is pleased to report a wave of new HERC development and a
high likelihood that the HERC community will welcome additional colleagues from several new regions in the U.S. in2012-13.
HERC Membership Reaches All Time High & More HERCs on the Horizon
The number of HERC member institutions has reached an all-time high of 557 members, a 3% increase since last

New HERC Development Grant
To encourage the formation of HERCs in regions where HERCs do not currently exist, the National
HERC has launched the Regional HERC Development Grant Program. The program will provide
personnel and monetary support to an institution that is willing to lead the development of a HERC in
its region. Regional HERC Development Grants are valued at up to $5,000. Funds may be used for such formation
expenses as: project/administrative staff support,
travel of HERC executive director to formation meeting, formation meeting (e.g., refreshments, facility rental), and mailings.
Only institutions that have already secured senior administrative support for HERC development are eligible for
the grants. Grant guidelines and applications will be issued in 2012 and grants will be awarded in fiscal year 2012-

Diversity News
Increasing the exposure of faculty, staff, and administrator job opportunities at HERC member
institutions, to the most talented and diverse academic jobseekers, ission. The
strategy for achieving this is threefold: advertising the HERC jobs websites in publications and websites
that reach diverse jobseekers; establishing partnerships with associations and societies that serve
women and minority professionals in higher education disciplines; and attending and exhibiting at
higher education conferences that bring together women and minority scholars, mentors, and
professionals. The National HERC is investing in each of these areas and as a result, continues to
outpace national averages on the race, ethnicity, and gender of our registered jobseeker population.

attended by over 3,300 students, mentors, and professionals
annually and proved to be an excellent outreach opportunity.
Some attendees were already familiar with the HERC jobswebsites and were utilizing them during the job search. Others
were eager to add HERC to their jobseeker toolkit.
