Cyrtophyllum fragrans(Synonym: Fagraea fragrans)

Common names:Tembusu

Size:Large (Up 40m)

A highly valued native tree of Singapore, this beautiful, long-lived tree is often planted in parks and along roadsides with large verges. The Tembusu is also an important source of timber as it is long-lasting and resistant to termites. It is used in various construction projects, such as bridges, boats and panelling. In Singapore, large wooden chopping boards used by hawkers are sometimes made from Tembusu timber. The back of the Singapore five-dollar note also features a Tembusu Heritage Tree found in the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Green Wave is a worldwide biodiversity campaign that educates children and

youth on the importance of protecting our natural environment. As Singapore

continues to urbanise, it is critical that it remains green and vibrant so that it

can continue evolving into a City in a Garden. Greenery helps us mitigate the

effects of dense urban living.

Each year at 10am on 22 May, students from around the world plant locally

important trees in their school compounds. This activity, which occurs on local

time, creates a figurative “green wave” that begins in the far east and ripples

across the globe.

For each of these schools, NParks will deliver a Tembusu tree and help them

to prepare the tree planting site.
