National Parks in South Africa
Definition
A National Park is a park representing the
indigenous fauna, flora, landscapes and
associated cultural heritage in the country.
In South Africa the national parks are managed by
SANParks.
South Africa has 20 national parks.
Kruger National Park
• It is seen as the “flagship” national park of
South Africa.
• Established in 1938
• It covers an area of 19 500km2
• It stretches for 350 km along the Mozambique
border from Mpumalanga in the south, through
Limpopo to Zimbabwe in the north.
• It is the biggest national park in South Africa.

• It has the following number of species:
– 336 trees
– 49 fish
– 34 amphibians
– 114 reptiles
– 507 birds and
– 147 mammals
• The most well known of these are the Big 5:
lion, elephant, leopard, rhinoceros, buffalo

Skukuza is the main rest camp.
It is also the administrative headquarters of the
Kruger National Park.
It is the largest rest camp in the Kruger National
Park.

Bushveld camps
– Camps set in the bushveld area of the KNP
– Kruger has 5 bushveld camps
• Bateleur
• Biyamiti
• Shimuwini
• Sirheni
• Talamati

Overnight hides are unique accommodation
facilities where tourists feel close to nature.
It is usually built close to a watering hole.
It blends in with the natural environment.
Tourists can stay in the hide and watch the
game at the watering hole.
Game do not feel threatened by the tourists
because they are inside the hide and not really
visible to the animals.

Bush lodges are places where tourists can stay
overnight.
It offers viewing decks from where tourists can
watch nature.

Luxury lodges offer more luxurious
accommodation to tourists.
Tourists stay in 5 star accommodation while
enjoying everything the KNP offers.

• Bush braais (barbeques)

• Chill out in the rest camp, with cold drink and
