The c o n g r e g a t i o n t h a t was t o b e known a s t h e P r o p s t Lutheran Church was i n e x i s t e n c e by 1760. Although t h i s c o n g r e g a t i o n h e l d church s e r v i c e s a t t h i s t ime, i t i s n o t known i f a church b u i l d i n g a c t u a l l y e x i s t e d o r when t h e f i r s t one was c o n s t r u c t e d . It i s known t h a t t h e f i r s t b u i l d i n g was l o c a t e d a b i t t o t h e sou th- e a s t o f t h e p r e s e n t church on t h e p e r p e t u a l l y deeded 34 a c r e l o t . Cons t ruc ted of round l o g s w i t h c l a y c h i n k i n g , i t had a wooden chimney w i t h a c l a y l i n i n g t o p reven t t h e l o g s from c a t c h i n g f i r e .

The second church b u i l d i n g was o f hewn-log c o n s t r u c t i o n . Th is church was l o c a t e d i n what i s today a c o r n e r of t h e o l d cemetery . Th is b u i l d i n g s e r v e d t h e community a s a p l a c e of worship u n t i l about 1885, when i t was d i s m a n t l e d , t r a n s p o r t e d and reassembled on a new s i t e and used a s a d w e l l i n g f o r many y e a r s b e f o r e b e i n g c o n v e r t e d t o a b a r n .

The t h i r d ( p r e s e n t ) b u i l d i n g was c o n s t r u c t e d around 1887 and was i n f a i r l y r e g u l a r u s e u n t i l i t s abandonment i n 1920. The church s t o o d v a c a n t and d e t e r i o - r a t e d g r e a t l y u n t i l 1968 when r e s t o r a t i o n work was begun. By 1974 t h e church and a d j o i n i n g land ( t h e 3% a c r e s o f t h e o r i g i n a l g r a n t ) ' h a d been improved, and t h e s i t e was once a g a i n o f s e r v i c e t o t h e community a s a p a r k o r community c e n t e r .

The p r e s e n t P r o p s t Church i s a r e c t a n g u l a r b u i l d i n g o f frame c o n s t r u c t i o n which r e s t s on a f o u n d a t i o n of c u t s t o n e . E x t e r i o r w a l l s a r e covered w i t h c l a p - board s i d i n g and have been p a i n t e d w h i t e . There a r e t h r e e windows on each of t h e two longer s i d e s , a l l 6 /6 double-hung s a s h and very p l a i n i n appearance. The f r o n t and r e a r w a l l s have no windows. There a r e two symmet r ica l ly p l a c e d e n t r a n c e doors a t t h e f r o n t e l e v a t i o n , t h e s t e p s f o r which a r e c u t s t o n e s t a k e n from t h e f o u n d a t i o n of t h e second church b u i l d i n g . The e x t e r i o r i s v e r y s imple and unadorned excep t f o r a s m a l l V i c t o r i a n - t y p e d e c o r a t i o n l o c a t e d under t h e eaves a t each c o r n e r . The roof i s m e t a l and h a s been p a i n t e d r e d . There i s a c h i m e y l o c a t e d n e a r t h e c e n t e r of t h e b u i l d i n g , b u t it i s n o t i n use .

As w i t h t h e e x t e r i o r , t h e i n t e r i o r o f t h e church i s v e r y p l a i n and s imple . A r a i s e d , goble t -shaped p u l p i t i s a t t a c h e d t o t h e f r o n t w a l l , a c c e s s t o which i s by way o f f i v e s t e p s l e a d i n g up i t s s i d e . A s m a l l , p l a i n s t a n d t a k e s t h e p l a c e of an a l t a r and i s l o c a t e d i n f r o n t o f t h e p u l p i t . The pews a r e o r i g i n a l and were handmade. I n one c o r n e r n e a r t h e p u l p i t i s l o c a t e d t h e f i r s t o rgan used i n t h e church .

The church was abandoned i n 1920 and was i n bad ly d e t e r i o r a t e d c o n d i t i o n i n 1968 when t h e Men of t h e Lu theran Church o f t h e Mountain began r e s t o r a t i o n work. S i d i n g was removed and t h e f raming s t r a i g h t e n e d i n p l a c e s by t h e u s e o f new wood and m e t a l r e i n f o r c i n g . New wea therboard ing , s i m i l a r t o t h e o l d , was p l a c e d and t h e b u i l d i n g p a i n t e d w h i t e . The r e s t o r a t i o n work h a s r e t u r n e d t h e church t o t h e appearance i t probab ly had a t t h e t u r n o f t h e c e n t u r y .

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

It was i n about 1760 t h a t German immigrants had f i r s t e s t a b l i s h e d s t r o n g community t i e s i n t h e v a l l e y s of what i s now Pendleton County, West V i r g i n i a . The f e r t i l e p l a i n s between t h e mountains were i n v i t i n g t o t h e i n d u s t r i o u s p e o p l e who began t o farm h e r e . An outgrowth of t h e i r a c t i v i t y i n t h e form o f a f o r m a l Lutheran c o n g r e g a t i o n seemed o n l y n a t u r a l , and t h e y c a r r i e d t h e i r ambi t ions a l i t t l e f u r t h e r when making a d d i t i o n a l u s e of q u a r t e r s and p a s t o r s f o r t h e e d u c a t i o n of t h e i r c h i l d r e n . The name of t h e P r o p s t Church i s f i t t i n g , a l s o , f o r i t was c o n s t r u c t e d on l and deeded by John Michael P r o p s t f o r p e r p e t u a l u s e of t h e Lutheran immigrants.

The a r c h i t e c t u r e of t h e P r o p s t Church i s very p l a i n and s imple , b u t even i n i t s s i m p l i c i t y t h e b u i l d i n g i s o f i n t e r e s t , f o r i t i s a l i n k w i t h t h e p i o n e e r beg inn ings o f i t s c o n g r e g a t i o n , a group which was i n e x i s t e n c e w i t h i n a few y e a r s a f t e r t h e f i r s t s e t t l e m e n t w i t h i n p r e s e n t Pend le ton County, West V i r g i n i a . E a r l y e s t a b l i s h m e n t o f r e l i g i o u s i n s t i t u t i o n s by German immigrants i n d i c a t e s t h a t t h e c h u r c h was a g r e a t i n f l u e n c e i n t h e s e t t l e m e n t o f t h e a r e a .

One Roger Dyer probably made t h e f i r s t permanent s e t t l e m e n t i n what i s now Pendle ton County i n 1747. Soon a f t e r , o t h e r s fol lowed, among whom was John Michael P r o p s t . P r o p s t l o c a t e d i n t h e South Fork r e g i o n sometime b e f o r e 1749 when, it i s r e c o r d e d , h e e n t e r t a i n e d i n h i s home a group of Moravian m i s s i o n a r i e s f rom Bethlehem, Pennsylvania . The f i r s t l e g a l r e c o r d o f John P r o p s t i n t h e n Augusta County, V i r g i n i a , was a deed f o r 110 a c r e s of l a n d a long t h e South Fork, d a t e d 1753.

A c o n g r e g a t i o n was i n e x i s t e n c e i n 1760, b u t t h e f i r s t church b u i l d i n g was p robab ly n o t c o n s t r u c t e d u n t i l a few y e a r s l a t e r . The l and t h a t John Michael P r o p s t s o l d t o t h e c o n g r e g a t i o n ( f o r t h e nominal sum o f 5 s h i l l i n g s ) and on which t h e f i r s t church house was e r e c t e d was n o t bought by P r o p s t u n t i l 1761. He s o l d 3% a c r e s t o t h e church commissioners f o r " t h e members of t h e c o n g r e g a t i o n of t h e Lu theran church a t t h e South Fork o f Potowmack" i n 1769. The f i r s t b u i l d i n g may have been i n e x i s t e n c e a t t h e t ime John P r o p s t s o l d t h e l and t o t h e c o n g r e g a t i o n i n 1769, b u t i t i s u n l i k e l y t h a t i t was t h e r e when h e bought t h e l and i n 1761.

The f i r s t church was of round- log c o n s t r u c t i o n w i t h c l a y c h i n k i n g between t h e l o g s and a l o g chimney w i t h a c l a y l i n i n g . When t h e second church was b u i l t , t h e f i r s t was r e l o c a t e d t o t h e o p p o s i t e end o f t h e p r o p e r t y and used a s a German p u b l i c s c h o o l where c h i l d r e n of members were t a u g h t by t h e m i n i s t e r o r o t h e r s .

The f i r s t r e s i d e n t m i n i s t e r o f t h e P r o p s t Church was one P e t e r Misch le r who emigra ted from Germany i n 1761. I n 1769 Misch le r appeared b e f o r e t h e E v a n g e l i c a l Lu theran Min i s te r ium of Pennsy lvan ia i n P h i l a d e l p h i a t o g a i n admiss ion t o t h a t body a s a p r e a c h e r . He was n o t a c c e p t e d by t h e Min i s te r ium because h e d i d n o t meet t h e q u a l i f i c a t i o n s , and i t was c la imed t h a t he had been invo lved i n church d i s t u r - bances and r e v o l t s i n t h e p a s t . M i s c h l e r was t o l d t o r e a p p e a r b e f o r e t h e Minis ter iurn t h e f o l l o w i n g y e a r , b u t t h e r e a r e no i n d i c a t i o n s t h a t h e d i d s o . M i s c h l e r was p r e a c h i n g i n t h e South Fork a r e a i n t h e e a r l y 1 7 7 0 ~ ~ a s h e sued t h e c o n g r e g a t i o n f o r non-payment f o r h i s r e a d i n g i n church and t e a c h i n g t h e c h i l d r e n . T h i s would make Misch le r one of t h e f i r s t t e a c h e r s a s w e l l a s m i n i s t e r s and t h e P r o p s t c o n g r e g a t i o n one o f t h e o l d e s t r e l i g i o u s and e d u c a t i o n a l groups i n t h e a r e a . P e t e r M i s c h l e r s e r v e d t h e c o n g r e g a t i o n f o r a lmost f o r t y y e a r s u n t i l h i s d e a t h i n 1812.

The second church was b u i l t of hewn l o g s and was l o c a t e d where t h e c o r n e r o f t h e cemetery i s a t p r e s e n t . It was used u n t i l about 1885. A t t h a t t ime t h e home of t h e a r e a r e s i d e n t by t h e name of Jack Hoover burned. S i n c e t h e r e were p l a n s b e i n g made t o b u i l d a new church, Hoover r e q u e s t e d t h e l o g s from t h e o l d b u i l d i n g f o r u s e i n c o n s t r u c t i n g a new house. The church was d i smant led and t h e l o g s marked and t r a n s p o r t e d t o Broad Run where t h e y were reassembled. The b u i l d i n g was l a t e r made i n t o a b a r n and was s t i l l i n use a few y e a r s ago.
