Working with the defence communityLike all government departments, the Ministry of Defence is on a journey of digital transformation, with Defence as a Platform (DaaP) at its heart.

MOD aims to break down vertical siloes, deliver services more quickly and more efficiently, and be more connected than ever before — yet maintain the security that defence demands.

Drawing on our experience of providing assured cloud solutions to other government departments such as the Ministry of Justice, HMRC and the Home Office, we’re working with MOD to help drive this change through the use of cloud services.

Using our secure, sovereign, resilient cloud platform, we and our partners can deliver defence information capabilities and outcomes at pace, and with the innovation required to act as a force multiplier for MOD.

UKCloud: key characteristics Connectivity. We’re the most connected cloud provider to secure government networks. We’re a certified Public Services Network (PSN) service provider, we’re connected to the RLI, and we’re an aggregator for the N3 network.

A proven platform. Delivering services to the MOD, Ministry of Justice, Home Office and other departments with data-sensitive applications.

Security. Protecting citizen data, our services were previously Pan Government Accredited up to IL3, and so are suitable for data at OFFICIAL (including OFFICIAL-SENSITIVE).

Sovereign. As a UK company, our cloud platform is hosted only in the UK, in close proximity to other known assets.

Cost efficiency. Simple hourly charges, pay only for what you use.

Greener cloud. Ours are CarbonNeutral® Cloud Services; we also have CarbonNeutral® Company status.

We work closely with the defence community and with system integrators (SIs), managed service providers, application developers, ISVs and other partners to deliver the apps and services MOD needs.

This brochure describes services from just a few of our 200+ partners, for whom our platform provides a trusted hyperscale cloud, connected to all government networks, on which to host their apps.

We also partner with many of the large defence suppliers and SIs who continue to play a major role in delivering ICT capability to the defence community. These include Airbus Defence & Space, BAES, Boeing, Capgemini, Fujitsu Defence, Leidos, Leonardo and Thales, among others.

Through these partnerships, MOD benefits from the specialist defence expertise and scale that such companies guarantee, combined with the flexibility, reduced costs and cloud expertise offered by UKCloud.

Securely hosted innovative apps delivering new capabilities to the defence community.

The app is highly scalable and flexible. As well as being configurable for a defence deployment, it offers multiple user roles with a customisable interface for each role, and allows users to work both online and offline.

Mobility

Nine23 Managed Mobility as a Service

Standard mobility offerings may not always meet the specific security requirements of the defence community; but mobility is critical to a modern defence service.

Managed Mobility as a Service (MMaaS) is an encrypted service delivered over the internet, which does away with the need to rely on mobile carriers’ networks. It provides users with secure point-to-point communications (including unified communications capabilities) and secure email.

Niteworks Brockworks

To develop innovative ICT solutions in support of Defence as a Platform and other MOD initiatives, developers need the freedom to experiment, explore, and fail safely.

The Brockworks programme provides a secure collaboration environment in which developers can work creatively with the latest cloud and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies.

MyLife Digital Consentric Permissions Service

Managing data usage consents is becoming more complex, as new and emerging data protection legislation puts new obligations on organisations like MOD which process data about individuals.

The Consentric Permissions Service simplifies the challenge, helping MOD maintain compliance, increase its reputation as a trusted organisation, and reduce the associated costs.

• An organisational view of an individual’s consent status

• Granular control of access rights, and of data types and processing purposes

• Enormous scalability

Individuals manage their consents via an easy-to-use dashboard and a ‘right to erasure’ feature.

Data capture, storage and analytics

MyLife Digital Consentric Value Exchange

Like many other organisations, MOD will have collected data about individuals over time. It will be stored in a fragmented way across a variety of systems and locations. This makes it very difficult to correlate the data or extract insights from it.

The Consentric Value Exchange changes the game for historical and new data, by:

• Capturing self-reported and observed datasets about individuals

• Providing centralised management and secure cloud-based storage of all the datasets relating to each individual

• Integrating personal data with external datasets

• Providing surveying capability and analytics reporting

MDS Application Delivery as a Service provides all of the above benefits. Suitable for Windows and Linux applications, it can deliver anything from a single app to a full desktop, across the internet or a secure network, all backed up by round-the-clock support.

Managed cloud

Adapt Managed Cloud

Migrating to a secure cloud solves many infrastructure challenges, but not every organisation has the resources to manage a cloud platform to best effect.

Through its Managed Cloud service, Adapt (a Datapipe company) adds an enterprise-grade service wrap to the secure, accredited UKCloud platform, providing MOD with an industry-leading managed service that delivers beyond the UKCloud hypervisor. Adapt designs, builds and manages the virtual machines and operating systems, with the capability to go even further.

In addition, Adapt provides enterprise-class project management services to facilitate the transition into cloud-based infrastructure, such as UKCloud.

To help ensure successful outcomes, a digital transformation or cloud migration project must be clearly defined and transparent on costs.

There’s no community more aware than defence of the need to secure its information.

MDS Protective Monitoring as a Service is a GPG-compliant SIEM tool, which is configurable to an organisation’s needs and fully managed by MDS. Accredited by CESG CCTM and massively scalable, the solution provides:

• Enhanced situational awareness

• Forensically sound log collection and storage, with export capability

• 24/7 support, delivered by the ITIL-aligned MDS service desk

Secure collaboration

MDS Deep Secure guards and diodes

As part of its digital transformation, MOD will want to be able to share data with suppliers and partners without compromising information security.

MDS provides secure data translation using Deep Secure’s data guards and diodes to protect data. Using the service, MOD can share valuable and sensitive data with less trusted organisations in a secure, controlled manner. The service can be easily integrated with existing capabilities, and includes:

• Malware protection and data loss prevention, to reduce information security risk

• Protection against zero-day attacks

• Enhanced security operations for response and remediation in the event of an attack

The service lets you demonstrate compliance with policy, standards and legislation; and enables you to hold users to account for their information-sharing actions.

MDS WickR collaboration

Collaboration services can help dispersed teams work more effectively but MOD will want to keep conversations secure.

The MDS WickR collaboration service enables high-security voice, video and text communications, protected using multiple layers of encryption, role-based access control and ID verification, and other security measures. The service enables:

• Single sign-on

• One-to-one conversations

• Secure rooms for group collaboration

• One-to-one and group audio and video calls

• Sending and receipt of files and images

• Connection to users outside the organisation’s own network

Two-factor authentication, touch ID, remote device wipe and a custom expiration timer provide further protection and control.

Secure mobility

SecureCloud+ Enterprise Mobility Management

Like employees elsewhere in the public sector, MOD staff increasingly want to be more productive by having anytime, anywhere access to secure networks and applications from the device of their choice (smartphone, tablet, laptop).
