About The Seminar

The Cooperative Enterprise is a complex human system that must be understood on several

levels, its dual role as a venture with social and economic outputs is a defining characteristic as its

collective ownership, cooperatives and other membership-based organizations have proven to offer

valuable opportunities (directly and indirectly) for farm and non-farm rural and urban

employment.

The United Nations General Assembly pronounced 2012 as the International Year of

Cooperatives. It helped us to know the contributions of cooperatives towards socio-economic

development. It has been noted that cooperatives impact poverty reduction, employment

generation and social integration which contributes toward creating better lives. The primary aim

of Cooperative has always been to better the precarious lives of those who struggle to get afoot hold

in the mean world. Cooperatives have been extending their services to strive towards a holistic

social development. Cooperative system is one of the strongest is flourishing; they have

significantly contributed in achieving the record food grain production of about 250 millions tones

during 2011-12. In India, Cooperatives created over a million job opportunities both in villages and

towns; slums have given way to affordable houses for the slum-dwellers-over 4 lakh housing units

have been constructed; women empowerment has been a key achievement through cooperative

movements like AMUL, IFFCO, KRIBHCO, TCMS, Annapurna Mahila Credit Cooperative Societies etc.

apart from the core activities, cooperative actively provide beliefs to victims of natural disasters

and assist in restoring the nature; conservation of environment, planting saplings, eco friendly

operations are also given utmost importance.

Cooperatives, thus aim at growth with equity. These can be useful institutions for inclusive

growth, as they meet the requirements in respect of their core clients - farmers, growers, artisans,

handloom weavers, producers and women, who need the support of the cooperative movement.

Cooperatives can also be an institutional mechanism for involving millions of our people who fall

outside the purview of the formal economy to participate in economic activities.

Message from Swami Abhiramananda

It is a great pleasure for me to have come to understand that the Post graduate and

Research Department of Cooperation of Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and

Science is conducting a UGC-Sponsored National Seminar entitled ‘Cooperative Enterprises:

Promoting Indian Economy.

The Cooperative movement in India which is one of the largest voluntary movements in the

world has been serving the people in various ways. Its genesis lies in the need, a few decades back,

of the farmers of this country who were being exploited by unscrupulous and usurious money-

lenders. It was felt at that time that for agricultural development, which was important for the

overall development of the economy, it was necessary to rid the farmers of the clutches of money

lenders. It was how the credit cooperative movement was born in India and it continued to be so for

quite a few years when it gradually expanded itself to other unpenetrated areas and diversified its

activities in almost every field of socio economic activity. The prosperity of the farmer and the

common man no doubt has increased due to cooperatives providing them help in various ways.

I believe that this National Seminar will be an eye opener for all the research scholars,

faculty members, students from various educational institutions to aspire further to accomplish

research excellence in this field

I appeal to the participants to gain the utmost benefit from this National Seminar. I extend

my best wishes to all the participants.
