Filtering and subsampling

Not all questions are asked of all respondents. Some questions only apply to some respondents (e.g. questions for parents with children at school); others are asked of a random subsample of respondents because the results aren’t needed at local authority level. This means that robust results will be available at local authority level only for some questions; for other questions, robust results will only be available at regional or national level.

Some topics are asked of all respondents they apply to (up to 14,500 respondents each year, or around 660 per LA). This provides robust results down to LA level for topics that apply to everyone. For topics that do not apply to everyone (e.g. childcare), this approach provides the most robust results possible given the size of the survey.

Some topics are asked of a random subsample of 750 respondents per region (North / Mid / South East / South West Wales), around 3,000 respondents in total. This provides robust results down to regional level.

Other topics are asked of a random subsample of around 650 respondents in each of the 7 Local Health Boards (4,500 people in total). This provides robust results down to LHB level.

Some topics are asked of a random subsample of around 2,000 respondents (i.e. around 100 per LA). This will provide robust results at national level only.

Subsampling is included in the questionnaire routing at the start of each subsampled topic, marked with a green background, e.g.: SUBSAMPLED TOPIC: ASK IF ss_gp = 1

Where this routing appears, it applies to the rest of the questions in that module unless otherwise indicated. More details on which topics are subsampled is given in Annex A.

Guide to question format

All questions in the survey questionnaire follow a similar format. Below is a guide to interpreting the format. Example of question layout ASK ALL LongIll HQ

Do you have any long-standing illness, disability or infirmity? By long-standing I mean anything that has troubled you over a period of time or that is likely to affect you over a period of time?

SINGLE CODE Yes 1 GO TO LongIllLimit No 2 GO TO XXX Don't know (SPONTANEOUS ONLY) -9 Refused -99

ASK IF 1 AT LongIll HQ

Does this illness or disability limit your activities in any way? IF RESPONDENT HAS MENTIONED MULTIPLE ILLNESSES OR DISABILITIES, ASK: Do any of these illnesses or disabilities limit your activities in any way?

SINGLE CODE Yes 1

GO TO XXX No 2 Don't know (SPONTANEOUS ONLY) -9 Refused -99 Question not applicable -8

The wording of the question to be read out by the interviewer to the respondent will always be displayed in the font below (Arial, Bold and Size 10). Any text in this box that is non-bold type and capitals is an instruction or note for the interviewer.

All questions have a coding frame associated with them, which means that the computer only allows the interviewer to record certain answers. These are given as positive numbers within the coding frame. In certain questions, you will see that the interviewer will be able to record ‘Other’ as an answer option.

This text shows which question to go to next, which can depend on the answer option selected.

Only people answering ‘Yes’ at LongIll are required to answer this question.

These codes are used by the interviewer when the respondent refuses to answer the question or when the question isn’t asked. In this case, those answering ‘No’ at LongIll will be recorded as -8 (Question not applicable) for LongIllLimit.

This is to show whether the question can have more than one answer option. ‘SINGLE CODE’ means only one answer can be selected. ‘MULTICODE’ means that more than one answer can be selected.

The text in capitals indicates who the question is to be asked of (here, all respondents). ‘LongIll’ is the question and variable name.

Indicates the source of the question. See next page for key to abbreviations.

The next questions are asked about all the children [you / you and your partner] are responsible for in this household. Please think about [names of children] when answering these questions. INTERVIEWER INSTRUCTION: Respondents are asked to think of all of their dependent children when answering these questions. Cases may arise, however, where one child ‘has’ and one cannot afford or one ‘doesn’t need’ and one cannot afford. In these cases priority coding is necessary. The priority will ALWAYS be cannot afford. Therefore, the priority order is: 1. cannot afford, 2. doesn't need, 3. (all) have. If respondent’s answer doesn’t allow you to distinguish between code 2 and 3, ask “Which answer from the card best applies to you?” For each of the following please tell me the number from the showcard that best explains whether your (child has/children have) it or not. *** SCRIPTING NOTE: TEXT FILL “[DOES YOUR CHILD / DO YOUR CHILDREN)]” SHOULD BE DRIVEN BY THE NUMBER OF DEPENDENT CHILDREN IN THE HOUSEHOLD.
