After laying a new foundation for the future of LSU basketball in Year 1, Will Wade enters his second year as head coach of the Tigers. The first night Wade led the Tigers onto the floor of the Maravich Center was a night that signaled a new dawn for the storied program. There had been plenty of excitement prior to the opening game as the first-year coach went all over the state speaking to groups about basketball. But would people back that up by showing for the opening game? They did to the tune of 11,856 at the Maravich Center, the largest opening night crowd since the start of Shaquille O’Neal’s final season of play at LSU in 1991-92. It was the first of 18 wins that would lead LSU back to postseason play for the first-time since 2015 and produce the first postseason NIT win in Baton Rouge. Wade became just the second coach in school history to take his first LSU team to postseason play. The first-year coach delivered on what he promised – a team that would play hard, would represent the University well and players committed to building the program. Wade and an experienced coaching staff put together a recruiting class that included two five-star players and two four-star players that helped the Tigers finish with the No. 3 recruiting class in the country leading into the 2018-19 season. That new foundation for the future began on March 20, 2017, when Frank William “Will” Wade was named the 22nd head men’s basketball coach at LSU. He arrived at LSU after a stellar two-year stint as the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University with four years of very successful experience as a head basketball coach. Wade was introduced to LSU fans at a special media event held in the

middle of the LSU Student Union. Wade told the media and a large contingent of LSU students: “I am so excited about the opportunity to lead this program and LSU Basketball back to the top of the SEC and back to regular, consistent NCAA Tournament appearances. We have been to four Final Fours. We have been to 20 NCAA Tournaments. We have 10 SEC Championships, and we are going to add to all three of those categories over our tenure here.” Prior to his appointment at LSU, the native of Nashville, Tenn., directed VCU to a 51-20 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances. The 2016 Rams advanced to the second round of the tournament, defeating Oregon State before losing to Oklahoma. In 2017, VCU lost to St. Mary’s in the first round of the 2017 tourney. Before becoming the head coach at VCU, Wade served as the head coach at Chattanooga for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. Wade’s coaching start came at Clemson where he served as Director of Basketball Operations (2006-07) and Graduate Assistant (2005-06) after four seasons as a student manager (2002-05). In eight years as an assistant coach at Clemson (2005-07), Harvard (2007-09) and VCU (2009-13), the teams hada record of 177-97 with six postseason appearances (2005-13). Wade is married to the former Lauren Deason, and the couple has one daughter, Caroline Elizabeth.

GAME 2 – LSU 97, UNCG 91 (BATON ROUGE, 11/9/18) The Tigers for the second straight game faced a conference champion and came away with a wild victory over the UNCG Spartans at the Maravich Center. LSU built a 49-36 halftime advantage and led by as much as 18 with 12:20 to play in the game. But the Spartans were hot from the arc and were getting three-pointers to LSU buckets and eventually got as close as five in the final minute of the game. Naz Reid led LSU with 29 points on 11-of-14 shooting including four treys, while Tremont Waters had his sixth career double double with 21 points and 10 assists along with six steals. Ja’vonte Smart added 13 points on a perfect evening (2-2 FGs, 1-1 3FGs, 8-8 FTs). LSU was 30-of-54 from the field (55.6 percent) and 9-of-18 from the arc. The Tigers were 28-of-31 from the free throw line. UNCG actually outshot the Tigers, 56.7% (34-of-60) to 55.6 for LSU. The Spartans were 19-of-33 from the arc (57.6%). LSU outrebounded UNCG, 34-18.

OTHER NUMBERS FROM GAME 2 UNCG TIES MARAVICH CENTER RECORD: The 19 three-pointers that UNCG posted marked the third time that an opponent has hit 19 treys in a game in the building. North Florida did it first in November 2015 and Florida in January 2017. WATERS DOUBLES UP: For the sixth time, Waters posted a double double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. GAME GOALS: Coach Will Wade said in the postgame after the UNCG game that two of the game goals were to make more free throws than opponent free throw attempts and to out rebound the opponents. Both of those were accomplished against the Spartans as LSU made 28 free throws compared to just nine attempts for UNCG. LSU outrebounded UNCG, 34-18. The margin from free throws made to opponents FT attempts is T6 biggest margin since the 1965-66 season and the most since Jan. 13, 2002 versus Arkansas (31/10). Also LSU is now 353-45 (.887) since 1966-67 when it has more FT makes than opponents FT attempts and 597-228 (.724) when it outrebounds opponents. When LSU has both things happen (FT makes > Opp. FTA and out rebounds opponent), the Tigers are 237-18 (.929). THIRD WINS: LSU’s win when outshot from the field marked the third time in 18 games in the Will Wade era that LSU has won when the opponent shoots a higher percentage. LSU also won for the third time in 15 games when the opponent has more assists than the Tigers.

THE OPENER: LSU 94, SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA 63 (BATON ROUGE, 11/6/18) The Tigers opened the 2018-19 season with a strong first half performance that put Southeastern Louisiana away, 94-63, at the Maravich Center. Six players were in double figures for the Tigers with five of them making their LSU debuts (four fresh-man, one JC transfer). Naz Reid had 17 points with Emmitt Williams getting a double double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Marlon Taylor had 15 points, while Darius Days had 11 points and Ja’vonte Smart 10. Skylar Mays, one of the veterans in experience in his third year with the Tigers, had 11 points. LSU made 16-of-27 field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes, including the final 13:30 of the first half when the Tigers outscored Southeastern, 33-9, to go up 48-18 at the intermission. LSU out rebounded the Lions, 43-32, with 19 offensive boards. Seven of Williams’ 10 rebounds were offensive. For the game LSU shot 48.5 percent (32-66), made six treys and was a good 24-of-31 at the free throw line.

OTHER NUMBERS FROM THE OPENER 6 IN DOUBLE FIGURES – This was the first time LSU has put six player in double figures since the open-ing of the 2011-12 season when LSU defeated Nicholls State, 96-74, here in Baton Rouge. FRESHMAN DOUBLE DOUBLE – Emmitt Williams opened his LSU and college career with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 16 minutes against Southeastern … He is the first freshman to double double in the opening game since Ben Simmons opened with 11 points and 13 rebounds in the opening game of the 2015-16 season versus McNeese State. WIN OVER STATE SCHOOL – The win over Southeastern makes the present streak of wins over state schools in the Maravich Center at 16 straight. The last loss to a state university came in November of 2011 when LSU lost to Nicholls, 62-53. LESS THAN 10 TURNOVERS – LSU had just nine turnovers for the contest and just three in the second half of the game. That’s the 13th time in the Will Wade era that LSU has had less than 10 turnovers in a game and the Tigers are 11-2 in those contests. 20+ POINT HALFTIME LEADS – LSU’s 30-point lead in the game at halftime continued a streak of what is now 79 straight games dating back to the 1966-67 season in which LSU won the game with a 20+ point lead at intermission.

LSU HOME WIN STREAK REACHES 10 The win over Memphis gives LSU 10 consecutive wins in the Maravich Center dating back to the final seven home games of a year ago. Ironically, prior to those seven wins, LSU lost three consecutive games at home at the start of SEC play before winning its final six home games of the 2017-18 regular season and the NIT game with UL-Lafayette. A win Friday puts this streak at 11 games, tying for the 11th longest in Maravich Center history:

CAN TIGERS WIN THE FOURTH? LSU goes for a fourth straight win to open the season for the first time since the 2012-13 season. The Tigers won the first three games each of the last three seasons but was unable to start 4-0 in any of those seasons. LSU has started 4-0 eight previous times since the start of the 1992-93 season.

3-0 AS RANKED TEAM IN 2018-19 The win by the Tigers against Memphis is their third as a ranked team this season … LSU was ranked No. 23 in the preseason AP poll, the first time the Tigers were ranked since the fourth poll of the 2015-16 sea-son (preseason and first three weeks) … This week, LSU moved up to No. 22 in the AP poll, marking its 200th appearance in the poll … LSU is now 263-99 when playing while ranked in the poll since the 1948-49 season.

TWO POINT-GUARD SYSTEM BECOMES THREE Soon after Coach Wade arrived at LSU, it became very clear that he believed in trying to have two-point guards on the court to run his offense. Last season that meant Tremont Waters and Skylar Mays who combined to average 27.2 points (15.9 for Waters, 11.3 for Mays) and a combined 8.9 assists. Now Coach Wade in the first two games has started three point guards – Waters, Mays and freshman Ja’vonte Smart. In three games the trio has combined for 113 points, 27 rebounds, 32 assists, 24 steals while shooting a combined 38-of-81 from the field with nine treys and 28-of-32 at the free throw line.

SKYLAR MAYS GETS HIS ESPN TOP 10 MOMENT Junior guard Skylar Mays joined teammate Tremont Waters with his own ESPN SportsCenter moment on Tuesday night against Memphis when he delivered an emphatic driving dunk that registered as the third best player of the day. Mays would score 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including three treys. It was his 37th career double figure scoring game at LSU. Mays is averaging 13.0 points per game, 2.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds. He has now made 58 starts in 67 career games … He is one of 34 players to have at least 200 career assists and is three steals shy of joining the 100 career steal list. The second team Academic A-A chosen by CoSIDA members has a 4.01 GPA and is majoring in pre-med/kinesiology … In addition to the CoSIDA honor last spring, he was honored by the LSU Black Faculty and Staff Caucus at their annual awards presentation as one of the recipients of the Jesse Owens Student Award for the highest GPA by undergraduate student-athletes.

TREMONT WATERS -- POINTING THE WAY As the primary point guard last season for Coach Will Wade, Tremont Waters showed his ability in several different categories -- passing, three-point shooting, steals and some spectacular plays that three times earned him spots on ESPN’s Top 10 Plays of the Day. Now after an All-SEC Freshman team season and having been named first-team Preseason All-SEC by the media and coaches, Waters will be expected to add leader-ship to those abilities as he will be one of four players with returning court time for the Tigers. The game Friday against UNCG in many ways displayed all of the things Tiger fans saw last season from Waters – 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting with two treys and 5-of-7 at the free throw line. He also had 10 assists and six steals. Waters has had six career double doubles – five points-assists and one points-rebounds. He also has had six career games of double figure assists in his 36 game LSU career so far:

2018-1910 – vs. UNCG

2017-1811 – vs. Arkansas11 – at Auburn10 – vs. Mississippi State10 – vs. North Florida10 – vs. UNCW10 – vs. UT-Martin

Waters has started 35 career games, playing the last three games last season in the post-season (SECT, NIT) with a mask after breaking his nose in practice. He averaged 15.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game last year … With his two assists against Southeastern (11/6), he became the 34th player to have 200 career assists. Last season he just missed becoming the second player to have 200 assists in a sea-son, finishing with a freshman record 198. Even on a night when shooting wasn’t going great, making just 3-of-11 shots, Waters was on his game in crucial times, dishing the ball off for easy buckets to the tune of eight assists and coming up with three steals. In just three games, he leads the Southeastern Conference in steals with a 4.7 spg average. Waters was named by collegebasketballNBCSports.com fifth on its list of top 20 lead guards for 2018-19. Scott Phillips wrote: “There might not be a guard who is more fun to watch than this 5-foot-11 sophomore. Breaking LSU’s freshman school assists record while pumping in tons of tough shots, Waters averaged 15.9 points, 6.0 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game last season. With flashy handles and deep perimeter shooting ability, Waters was made to make highlights as he can single-handedly ignite an offense.” Waters was named to the Bob Cousy Watch List, the Naismith Player of the Year Watch List and the NABC Player of the Year Watch List.

NAZ REID SHOWING SKILLS AND VERSATILITYThe freshman big man has shown his versatility of playing inside and outside and also his ability to take

the ball off the rebound and dribble up the court. He’s also shown he can shoot from a lot of places on the court and it doesn’t have to be right on the block

near the goal. Against UNCG he came up with 29 points on 11-of-14 shooting. However, of those 11 field goals he made

4-of-6 three-point attempts. One came from the deep baseline corner and another came from the top of the key.

In three games, Reid is 22-of-36 (61.1%), 6-of-14 from the arc (42.9%) and 7-7 from the free throw line. He is averaging 19.0 points per game and 6.0 rebounds.

EMMITT WILLIAMSThe freshman had his second double double against Memphis and after three games he is averaging 10.0

points per game and a team-high 8.3 rebounds. Williams is 11-of-17 from the field in the three games and the Fort Myers, Florida native is averaging 22.7 minutes per game as part of a lineup that includes three freshmen, a sophomore and a junior.

FRESHMAN SCORING WELL FOR TIGERSKenpom.com gives LSU an experience level at two games of 1.11, ranked 311 of the 353 teams after the

first nine days of play. The freshmen on the team in three games have scored 150 of LSU’s 276 points or 54.3 percent. Naz Reid

has scored 57 points, Ja’vonte Smart 36, Emmitt Williams 30 and Darius Days 27.

FREE THROW PRACTICE SEEMS TO BE HELPINGThe Tigers last year in Will Wade’s first season shot 73.1 percent from the line (459-of-628) with Tremont

Waters at 80.1 percent (117-146) and Skylar Mays at 83.7 percent (77-of-92). In the first three games LSU is 64-of-78 at the line or 82.1 percent. Naz Reid is 7-of-7, Waters 9-of-11,

Ja’vonte Smart 10-of-12 and Darius Days (8-8) and Skylar Mays (9-9) are both perfect as well. Coach Wade in the middle of practice runs a halftime drill at about the mid-point of practice in which

players shoot free throws with other players also practicing block out drills against the shooter. If the team doesn’t hit a certain percentage, they run.

The Tigers hit their first 22 free throws against UNCG before the first miss as they finished the game mak-ing 28-of-31. In the first two games, LSU opponents are just 30-of-48 at the stripe.

WHAT WILL THREE-POINT SHOOTING LOOK LIKE THIS YEAR Okay, the three-point shooting didn’t quite meet last year’s averages in the opening night, going just

6-of-24, but the three-point shooting ability is there for the Tigers after last year’s record season. That was proven when five different players contributed to a 9-of-18 night versus UNCG. Although what may not have been figured by LSU fans was nights like Naz Reid had against UNCG, hitting 4-of-6. Outside the arc the Tigers finished last year with 268 made treys, 34 more than the previousmark set in the 2012-13 season ... LSU hit for double figure three-pointers in nine games last season.

LSU also set a season record for attempts in 2017-18 with 774, topping the mark of 675 set in the 2013-14 season. LSU was fifth in the league in threes made per game in 2018 with 8.1 a contest.

Through the first two games, LSU is 20-of-60 or 33.3%. However, opponents have made 36-of-86 in the first three games or 41.9%.

ABOUT LOUISIANA TECHLouisiana Tech is also off to a 3-0 start this season as well with an impressive road win at Wichita

State, 71-58, and home wins over Sam Houston State, 76-69, and Harding, 89-58. The Bulldogs are scoring 78.7 points a game and giving up 61.7 points a game.
