A Brief Report National Youth Day 2
NATIONAL YOUTH DAY
January 12, the birthday of Swami Vivekananda, is celebrated as National Youth Day in India. This year it
was 150th
birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand. The Government of India decided and declared in
1984 that the birthday of Swami Vivekananda would be observed as the National Youth Day. The official
communication from the Government of India read ‘it was felt that the philosophy of Swamiji and the
ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth.’
UPSACS contacted Saksham Team at the Department of Psychology and invited proposal on 24-Dec-12 to
conduct various activities on the National Youth Day. With support from UPSACS and under the able
leadership of Prof. Archana Shukla Psychology Department, Lucknow University planned to organize a
series of activities including extempore speech, singing, dancing, poetry writing and slogan writing
competitions.
The main objective of celebrating the National Youth Day on LU campus was to inspire the youth and
generate awareness in them about various health and social issues. The event brought various
stakeholders on one platform to discuss contemporary concerns of youth and enhance their awareness
and skills to handle youth related issues. Young population is the most vulnerable for various health
related risks. HIV/AIDS is one of them. Through this event we celebrated Youth’s energy and creativity
and also sensitized them about their vulnerabilities as well as the strategies to minimize the risks in their
lives.
Preparation
Letters were sent on 29-dec-12 to all the departments at LU, affiliated / autonomous colleges and other
Universities in Lucknow requesting them to send their entries under various competition categories.
Entries were invited on the themes of ‘Nationalism, Human Values and Responsible Citizenship’. It was a
great pleasure to note that students participated with enthusiasm and high energy even though the
temperature was getting colder day by day reaching -0.7 during mid January at Lucknow. A number of
meetings were held at Department of Psychology to organize this program smoothly. The purpose of
organizing these meetings were planning and coordination of activities, selection of the jury members to
judge various competitions, training volunteers and putting them in, intricacies in finalizing the program,
selection of guest speakers for and checking their availability for January 12, 2013.
‘ A total of 168 students were registered to participate across various categories of competitions. We,
under the Saksham project, also coordinate activities of Lucknow University Red Ribbon Club (LU-RRC)
and approximately 400 LU students are registered as volunteers under LU-RRC. These volunteers
extended a lot of support at the planning stage and the also in organizing the activities properly at the
National Youth Day.
Students who participated in singing and dancing competition were called for audition / screening on 10-
Jan-13 at Psychology Department to weed out any undesirable words / lyrics / vulgar gestures. Four
faculty members from the Department of Psychology devoted their time for screening the entries.
Entries on the themes of ‘Nationalism, Human Values and Responsible Citizenship’ were shortlisted for
singing and dancing competitions. Screening committee also gave inputs wherever required - for
example if a participant danced well but song selection was not appropriate then s/he was advised to

change the song; the same was noted by the screening committee and submitted to organizing
committee. A total of 168 entries were shortlisted under various categories.

taken and confirmed. Categories wise list of Jury members is mentioned below:

Inauguration Function
Emcee for the Inaugural function were Dr. Archana Shukla-j of Psychology Department and Miss
Nehashree Srivastava from National Degree College.
At the onset, the honorable guests lighted the lamp and offered flowers to the photographs of Goddess
Saraswati and Swami Vivekanad. After this volunteers sung the ‘Saraswati Vandana’.
Prof. Archana Shukla, Director of the organizing committee welcomed the Chief Guest Shri G. Pattanaik,
Vice Chancellor, Lucknow University and. Then Prof. Shukla welcomed the Guest of Honour Shri Santosh
Kumar (PCS), Additional Project Director, UPSACS and all other guests and participants present in the
A.P.S en hall.
Shri Pattanaik, the Honorable LU VC, gave the inaugural speech. He started by asking ‘where are the
youth?’ and whether ‘youth is a stage of age (as commonly understood) or else a way of thinking?’. He
regretted the non-visibility of real youth and said that youth is not age bound. It is an idea. It is our
thinking that makes us young or old. If a person is of 21 years but he is not motivated towards his/her
goal, not inspired to eradicate social evils, not courageous and brave to take risks then s/he is not a youth.
He announced that being a youth does not mean that you are 20 -35 years of age. If your thoughts are
youthful, only then you are young. He stressed upon changes required in the society. He lamented that
so many bad things are going on in our society. He exalted the youths by quoting the lines of
Vivekananda to “be polite, be courageous, and be powerful.”
He highlighted that the older generation has not been able to give us a good society to us perhaps
because they could not foresee the kind of terrible problems that were to emerge. However, since we
are facing these problems we have to make efforts to correct our course, provide relevant
learnings/values and make this a better place for our young ones to live and work. This can only be done
by changing our thoughts, by respecting all forms of life, by protecting our environment and by
developing a concern towards the welfare of others in order to start the constructive regeneration of our
society. The VC also thanked the organizing team for making him realize all over again how he can
continue to be a youth in his thoughts and actions.
Speaking on the occasion Sri Santosh Kumar (PCS), Additional Project Director, UPSACS said that we are
not only a person with free will rather we also have some responsibilities. We need to imbibe the virtues
suggested by Swami Vivekanand and become polite, courageous and strong. He also discussed about the
various HIV/AIDS services being provided by UPSACS to the people infected / affected by the pandemic.
He also shared the strategies to reduce our vulnerabilities as youth.

Seminar on ‘Youth and Nation Building'
A seminar on Youth, Health and Nation Building was organized at the Department of Psychology on
National Youth Day. Three eminent speakers of Lucknow interacted with participants and discussed
about the philosophy of Swami Vivekanad and the role that that youth can play to make this world a
better place to live.
1. Swami Sujoyanand, Ram Krishna Math, Lucknow
Emphasis on teachings’ of Vivekananda ji was given by Swami Sujoyanand on
the occasion of NYD. He also told that human beings are divine entity. He
felt that there is a need to recognize our divine power and direct that power
in creative actions which has to be positive in nature. He also discussed
about self control. By giving the example of delicious food is presented
before you and you are hungry, an idea of eating that food quietly can come
in your mind but if you are able to control yourself in that situation you will be able to focus on your goal.
He also gave some simple tips to follow the path of getting the goal of divinity:
• We should not spit on roads. External cleanliness shows our internal cleanliness.
• We should follow traffic rules.
• Do not waste electricity and water.
• Do not waste petrol.
• Do at least one selfless and noble work in a day.
Swami ji also answered the questions raised by the
audience.
One question was “How to decide our goal?” He answered that realization of
divinity is very crucial for goal attainment. Getting admission in a famous
institute, to become an engineer, getting married, etc. are not our goals; these
are stations on the journey of life towards the ultimate goal. Our goals should
be to become selfless and to serve the humanity.
Another question was from audience was “if we are having power then how would we recognize it?”
Swami ji replied “In exams how can a student wake up to 12 to 2 am, the power comes on its own, the
need is to realize that power. The power is within our self but we are unaware of it.
Another question was “How to discover our real power?” He narrated a story of a lion in order to clarify
self realization. In the story that lion was reared in a herd of goats. He used to speak like goats, ate green
grass, behaved like goats. Thus, he was a goat in the body of lion. One day
another lion attacked on that herd and found a lion. He took that lion along
with him and showed his image in the water of a river. Afterwards, He gave
him flesh to eat, and then asked him to roar like a lion. The lion roared so
loudly. Then he realizes that he is a lion not a goat. According to Swami ji,
Vivekananda is that lion who came to that herd and make the lion to realize his
real power. We should read his books. His teachings’ are the way to realization
of real powers.
Betterment of the society imbibes in following the path of truth, humanity, divinity which is suggested by
Swami Vivekanad. Swami Sujoyanand ji also encouraged students invited to come
to the Ramakrishna Math and read the books of Vivekananda.
2. UPSACS Officials
Mr. Abhishek Singh, Quality Manager, UPSACS addressed the participants and
discussed bout maintenance of Health and Prevention from Viruses like HIV. He
shared the basic information about HIV/AIDS. He also informed the participants
about what can be done to arrest the transmission of infection of HIV and make
A Brief Report National Youth Day 11
the youth less vulnerable to such infections.
3. Dr. Dinesh Sharma, Mayor, Lucknow
Dr. Dinesh Sharma started his speech with the life history of Vivekananda. Dr.
Sharma narrated how from his childhood the young Vivekanand never liked outer
ostentation. In foreign countries he established a good reputation of India. Dr.
Sharma discussed that people of young generation should follow the ideals of
Swami Vivekananda. It is not necessary that a person always make right decision
but through firm determination, he can prove his decision right. He told that youth
has so much energy; all that they need to do is to focus their energy towards
positive direction. He also emphasized on cultural richness of India. He told that
India was “Cultural Guru” of all countries. Thereby many researchers came to India
to learn about its culture.
Valedictory
The valedictory function was started after the seminar. Dr. Dinesh Sharma, Mayor Lucknow was the
Chief Guest for the valedictory function. Dr. Sharma encouraged the participants by distributing prizes to
the winners.
UPSACS had suggested that three prizes – first, second
and third - besides consolation prizes be awarded
under each competition. However, in order to
encourage a greater no. of students, we at Saksham
decided to double the prizes and instead awarded two
first, two second and two third prizes besides five
consolation prizes under each category. The first,
second and the third prizes included (1) a certificate,
(2) a shield, (3) chocolate, and (4) books on Vivekanand.
We also gave certificates of ‘Appreciation’ to the three
special performances and a certificate of ‘participation’ to every competition entry. Planning and
preparing these certificates was a huge work for the Saksham team.
As a token of respect, ‘shawls’ and a bouquet of
flowers were given to all guest Speakers, Officials,
jury Members, and senior Saksham members. Parker
pens were given to honor the efforts of the 16
member core organizing team who worked tirelessly
towards the National Youth Day.
Prof. P.C. Mishra, Head Psychology Department gave
the formal vote of thanks.
