* PROJECT TIMELINE *

The Native Village of Napaimute received a CEDP Grant from ANTHC.

2011 Community Environmental Demonstration Project

The wind turbine

arrived in Napaimute.

In 2008, an alternative energy plan was created. In 2009, the Tribe obtained funding to purchase a simple inverter system where excess energy produced from the existing diesel generator was stored into batteries so that the generator would not have to turn on every time power was needed. The selected system would allow for future expansion to include solar and

wind power. They identified locations for the equipment and identified laborers to install the systems if they found funding.

Small scale solar and wind energy systems

were researched, quotes sought, and

most equipment ordered from Susitna Energy in Anchorage.

All of the solar energy equipment was received and successfully installed. The Tribe worked closely with the vendor to help expedite the order. The installers worked

quickly to try to beat the first snow fall. Although they were able to erect the wind tower, there was a shipping delay on the turbine.

The Tribe wrote an article about the project and featured it in their newsletter which was

widely distributed.

Napaimute saved a lot of money by utilizing local expertise and materials to create the wind tower

instead of purchasing it from a vendor. Wind towers are heavy and can be very expensive to ship.

The crew working late to

get the wind tower installed.

The operational wind turbine up on the

hill supplying power to the Tribe.

A solar tracker was ordered which would help to

improve efficiency of the solar panels

a minimum of 20%.

Solar and Wind Systems Purchased:

Solar Panels: Solarworld 245W Panels 24V (qty.6)

Wind Turbine: Whisper 200 w/controller 48V
