A plastic material is defined as a bioplastic if it is either biobased, biodegradable or both. (Source: www.european-bioplastics.org)

BIO-BASEDThe material is wholly or partially derived from biomass. Biomass used for bioplastics is usually corn, sugar cane or cellulose.

BIO-DEGRADABLEBiodegradability is an inherent property of certain polymers. Biodegradation is a chemical process in which materials, with the help of microorganisms, are metabolised to water, carbon dioxide and biomass.

The drivers behind bioplastics are:

NATIVIAPACKAGING

LACTIC ACIDCOMPOSTING

NATIVIA® films, once converted

into packaging, are ideally

disposed in the organic waste:

they are certified according to

the standard EN 13432 so, under

industrial composting conditions,

they fully biodegrade within six

months into CO₂, water and

humus, a soil nutrient.

Organic recycling is a clear benefit

especially when packaging is

highly contaminated by product

residuals.

End-of-life options A closed loop

However, if no separate collection of organic waste is available, they can be disposed

in the residual waste and incinerated, producing renewable energy.

Mechanical and chemical recycling of PLA are technically feasible but not

economically viable yet.
