Saint Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, when she was al-ready advanced in years, undertook, in her great piety, the hardships of a journey to Jerusalem in search of the cross, about the year 325. A temple to Aphrodite had been raised up by the Emperor Hadrian upon Golgotha, to defile and cover with oblivion the place where the saving Passion had been suffered. The venerable Helen had the statue of Aphrodite destroyed, and the earth removed, revealing the Tomb of our Lord, and three crosses. Of these, it was believed that one must be that of our Lord, the other two of the thieves crucified with Him; but Saint Helen was at a loss which one might be the Wood of our salvation. At the inspiration of Saint Macarius, Archbishop of Jerusalem, a lady of Jerusalem, who was already at the point of death from a certain disease, was brought to touch the crosses, and as soon as she came near to the Cross of our Lord, she was made perfectly whole. Consequently, the precious Cross was lifted on high by Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem; as he stood on the ambo, and when the people be-held it, they cried out, "Lord have mercy." It should be noted that after its discovery, a portion of the venerable Cross was taken to Constantinople as a blessing. The rest was left in Jerusalem in the magnificent church built by Saint Helen, until the year 614. At that time, the Persians plundered Pales-tine and took the Cross to their own country (see Jan. 22, Saint Anastasius the Persian). Late, in the year 628, Emperor Heraclius set out on a military campaign, retrieved the Cross, and after bringing it to Constantinople, him-self escorted it back to Jerusalem, where he restored it to its place.
Rest from labour. A Fast is observed today, whatever day of the week it may be.
THE ELEVATION OF THE VENERABLE
AND LIFE-GIVING CROSS SEPTEMBER 14
Happy Liturgical New Year!
Glory be to God for the new beginnings that come with the month of September, a new school year and a new Church year. Behold, all things have become new! With all of this newness comes a renewal of the Liturgical Calendar. The Church calendar once again ushers in a beginning so that each member of the body of Christ can make time and effort to come to Him. We have another chance to repent and fol-low His holy mission of salvation through the eyes of the Church He established. Throughout the year we will experience in the Liturgical Calendar the Great Feasts of the Church. We call them “Great” because they are events not only for us to behold but for the whole universe, for all of God’s creation. The twelve great feasts of the Liturgical Church year are: September 8: The Nativity of the Theotokos September 14: The Exaltation of the Cross November 21: The Entrance Into the Temple of the Theotokos December 25: The Nativity of Christ January 6: The Feast of Epiphany February 2: The Presentation of Christ March 25: The Annunciation Movable: Pascha, The Ascension of Christ and Holy Pentecost August 6: The Transfiguration of Christ August 15: The Dormition of the Theotokos
MESSAGE FROM FR. NICK
Page 2e 22 Nativity Epistle
The twelve Great Feasts of the Liturgical Church year are great because they are milestones in our Lord’s life for us. They reflect His mission of salvation and honor His holy Mother. They are holy because the Lord is Holy and He is calling us to participate in His Holiness. Our willing and faithful attendance is a measure of our efforts to come into His life, to begin to understand who we are - through a life in Christ. When we are in a play or musical, it is assumed that we will come to the practices and practice at home. If we are playing on a team, it is assumed that we will be at the practices, practice at home and come to the games. At our jobs there are numerous requirements, duties to fulfill and of course meetings. If we cannot fulfill our job requirements, we jeopardize our very employment. The feasts of the Church are required for a healthy life in Christ. We are invited as to the wedding feast and really should come, but who can make us come? Our freedom is val-ued also by God. Remember, He has given us free will. But if we don’t come or make an ef-fort to even acknowledge they exist, then it is probably true that we don’t value the life of the Church, the sacrifice of the Lord for us and our own life in Christ very much, at least not as much as our job or our performances, or our place on a team. The Great Feasts are situated in a cycle of the year that begins in September, the Birth of the virgin, the Exaltation of the Cross. They march on throughout the year telling the story of our salvation. This is why we remember the exodus from Egypt of the Israelites. This be-comes our exodus from sin and self-love to the land of the milk and honey, of self-sacrificing love and knowledge of God and love of our neighbor. Each Feast as it were opens up a door of compassion, an abundance of spiritual gifts because God is still revealing Himself to us through His divine energy. His grace, that is uncreated, transforms us bringing knowledge and delight to our soul. Of course this takes place in a sea of trouble, temptations, and trials. Nothing great comes easy. But it is worth it! Or at least it is required and is a God-pleasing sacrifice. As the Great Feasts shape the year and guide us, prepare your calendars and set aside these holy days to come to church or at least acknowledge them as part of your life, censing your icons at home, reading or singing the hymn of the feast of the day and thanking God by doing your cross for His Love, His sacrifice. These days are holy! Praise God in the highest!
May this Liturgical New Year bring you into His presence, into – A life in Christ, Fr. Nick

Orthodox Christian Stewardship is a way of life,
which acknowledges accountabil-
ity, reverence, and responsibility before God. A primary goal of Steward-
ship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Becoming a
Steward begins when we believe in God, to whom we give our love, loy-
alty and trust and act on those beliefs. As Stewards, we affirm that every
aspect of our lives comes as a gift from Him. Stewardship calls on the
faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts with which
they have been blessed.
An Orthodox Christian Steward is an active participant in the life of
the Church. The parish encourages all who accept the Orthodox Faith
to become practicing Stewards. Each year the Steward is expected to
carefully review his or her personal circumstances and make a commit-
ment of time, talent, and treasure to support the Parish and her Minis-
tries, which in turn support the National Ministries of our Archdiocese,
Metropolises, and institutions.
