Dreams were cultivated, multiple meetings were attended, and their hearts were opened to improving their relationship with God. This was the true preparation necessary to properly establish a Church community in Marin County. Now, 50 years later, Nativity of Christ again calls its faithful for their active participation. St. John Chrysostom in his Paschal Homily exclaims that regardless of one’s preparation during Great Lent, everyone should rejoice and take part in this radiant festival of Pascha. He states, “For the Master is generous and excepts the last even as the first.” These words welcome the multitudes that gather at Anastasi despite the sparsely filled pews during Lenten services. As we have gathered for Great Lent and Holy Week as a community, I also pray that we gather on Pascha to celebrate our Lord’s Resurrection. The light of faith we carry however is not just for Pascha, not just for our 50th Anniversary, but for all the years that our community continues to grow closer to Christ. May we continue to prepare for our Lord’s Crucifixion as our founding stewards prepared for the establishment of our Church community and may we celebrate our 50th Anniversary as the saints joyously celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord. The Word

During Great Lent we are called to increase our prayer life and fast in order to grow closer to Christ. Lenten meals are prepared, multiple services are attended and our hearts are opened to improving our relationship with God. This is the true preparation necessary to properly and prayerfully experience Holy Week. After Great Lent, there is yet another 40-day period that the Church calls its faithful for their active participation. Themes of forgiveness, repentance, and fasting are replaced with joy, victory and life. Through Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection, simple meals are now feasts, somber services are now joyous praise, and a tranquil demeanor is now jubilation in the risen Lord.

During the year 1969, the Greek Orthodox faithful of Marin and Sonoma Counties were also called to grow closer to Christ. Dreams were cultivated, multiple meetings were attended, and their hearts were opened to improving their relationship with God. This was the true preparation necessary

to properly establish a Church community in Marin County. Now, 50 years later, Nativity of Christ again calls its faithful for their active participation. Through the faith, hard work and sacrifice of our founding stewards, blue prints are now built facilities, and what once was a prayer of hope, is now 50 years of gratitude for God’s many blessings.

It is also an invitation for all of us to celebrate our Parish’s 50th Anniversary. Regardless of whether someone was here for the first ground breaking service or has recently began worshipping at Nativity of Christ, everyone is called to celebrate!

For these reasons, celebrating the feast of Pascha at Nativity of Christ on Sunday, April 28 for the 50th Anniversary is so significant. In 1969, thousands of faithful gathered at a local park for Pascha and now in 2019, we are able to celebrate on our own, picturesque grounds; a testament to the work and sacrifice of our founding stewards.

Kali Anastasi!

Lazarus SaturdayThe icon of the Saturday of Lazarus shows Christ calling His friend to come out of the tomb. Lazarus is coming forth from the tomb, still bound in the strips of burial cloth. His sisters, Mary and Martha are bowing before Christ, expressing both their sorrow in the death of their brother, but also their faith in Christ as the Messiah and Son of God. Next to them is someone who has followed the request of our Lord and removed the stone from the door of the tomb.Standing with Christ are his disciples who are witnesses of this miracle, a true manifestation of the power of God that would bring them assurance during the Passion of our Lord.In the center of the icon is a person who represents the crowd who also witnessed the miracle. Some believed, but others went and told the Pharisees and chief priests who continued their machinations to bring about the arrest of Christ and His death. The walled city of Jerusalem, where Christ will arrive in triumph the following day, is depicted in the background.

Parish Council Update

FestivalWe have completed all the pre-cooking and will be working on completing and fulfilling all Volunteer slots for the week of and entire weekend of the Festival. Thanks to all the Volunteers who have worked these past two months. If you want to volunteer the week and weekend of the Festival, p l e a s e c o n t a c t R o s e H u n t e r ([email protected]) Festival weekend is May 24, 25 and 26 this year.

The Spring Parish AssemblyHeld on Sunday, March 10, 2019 in the Fellowship Hall. We were excited to receive the information on the Parish Strategic Plan, the Facilities Report, Stewardship, the Festival and the growing and expanding Parish Ministries. In addition, the Board of Auditors found the financial statements in order and in compliance with General Accounting Principles. The Parish’s financial condition is excellent.

Great Lent, Holy Week, and PaschaWe hope to see all of you during our Lenten Journey together as we pray, fast, and worship. Holy Week offers us an intense time of prayer and fasting as a Parish as we anticipate His glorious Resurrection.

50th AnniversaryWe continue to celebrate our 50th Anniversary through the Liturgy at the Elks as well as the Philoptochos Fashion Show. This 50th year allows us to be thankful for all that the Parish has done and enjoy fellowship as we look both at our wonderful past and future. Excitement is building for the next celebration at the Pascha Picnic. We look forward to spending time with our Parish Family.

Strategic PlanAs we commemorate our past, we should also be excited to dream towards our future through the Strategic Plan. The Strategic Planning process started as we were working on several projects and decided to stop, step back, and look at all Parish needs; both ministries and facilities. The purpose of the Strategic Plan is to set priorities and focus energy and resources as the entire Parish works for a common goal. Many parishioners have suggested over 20 different projects or ministries they would like to see at Nativity. The Strategic Plan is necessary to see what we are going to do, what it costs and what we can raise to not incur any debt and continue a healthy and spiritual Parish. We encourage ALL parishioners to give their input one on one with Strategic Planning Committee and Parish Council members, to attend the Saturday, April 13 Workshop, to participate in the Confidential Survey and to attend the Special Parish Assembly on the Strategic Plan. “Every Great Dream Begins with Dreamers.” We want to encourage the entire Parish to “Dream” together.

We need YOU to Please complete the Strategic Planning Survey by April 5, and attend the Saturday, April 13 Workshop from 10-2. Please contact Spiro Stratigos ([email protected]) to ask any questions.

2019 April WORD 5

Why am I involved in the Strategic Planning Process? By Vicki KalabokesAs I continue my personal relationship with God, I continue to try to help people and improve the experience everyone has at our religious campus. I am very visual and spiritual so I am conscious of how people enter God’s House and other areas of the campus. We need to be inviting people to the joy of worshipping Jesus Christ by having a warm welcoming environment for all who want to worship or engage in Fellowship. I feel we need to have healthy Ministries to engage more people with Jesus Christ and Orthodoxy. Having the youth comfortable and engaged in our faith is high on my list.Strategic Planning was an integral part of my professional career so it was only natural that I could share my professional knowledge to benefit our Church. I know from experience that developing a strategic plan at our Church can achieve success. I have seen many organizations not implement successful plans and I know those pitfalls. I have learned that we have to have specific attainable and realistic goals that we can complete in a timely manner and that can be measured. We also need to dream and have a clear vision by ALL in our parish to be successful. I hope all of you will, join me and the entire Parish in developing our vision for the future of our Church.

50th Anniversary CelebrationOn March 2 we held a Bridal Gowns through the Years Fashion Show and Luncheon to celebrate, and it truly was a celebration – so many past, present and future Philoptochos Ladies working together. 30 wedding gowns were modeled with the oldest gown dating back to 1929. In addition to our 30 wedding gowns, we had six flower girls and one adorable ring bearer. The hall looked beautiful and our hardworking servers were incredible. Bravo to Nia Kosmas, chair and organizers Vicki Kalabokes, Pat Kamages, Irene Meehan and Rose Hunter – our set up team, models, the Ladies allowing us to feature their wedding gowns, flower girls, ring bearer and servers – this was truly a wonderful event. Our MC was Effie Fourakis; bouquets were donated by Cathy Selmi and favors were donated by Gigi Medhan. We plan to feature a slideshow of the event at an upcoming Fellowship Hour – we will have notices sent out. The Executive Editor of the Hellenic Journal was in attendance and will be doing a feature article on this event in their April edition.Philoptochos Academic Support ProgramEvery year Philoptochos has three, $1000 Academic Support scholarships available to graduating high school students, continuing college students or returning students whose families are stewards of our church.  Students must carry at least 12 units (8 units for graduate students). The application with grade and transcript requirements as well as the written narrative and character reference instructions are available in hard copy at the church office or by email request to Susan Stockton at   [email protected]. The application with all supporting documentation must be  submitted by Sunday, May 19. While we encourage all eligible students to apply, preference will be given to first time applicants. Scholarships will be awarded at the Recognition Fellowship Hour on Sunday, June 2nd.Board ElectionsWe will hold elections for Board Members in May. Anyone interested in serving on the Philoptochos Board, please contact any current Board Member. Need A Ride To Church?Or any church activity, please contact any Philoptochos Board Member and we will arrange a ride for you.

MembershipHere’s a friendly reminder to those who have not yet joined or renewed their membership with Philoptochos. This vital ministry of the Greek Orthodox Church in America relies on the support of each parish. Attendance at meetings is not necessary. However, consider sharing your time or talents for one event a year to raise money for charities. You’ll surely make a new friend and your heart will fill with the joy of giving. Please see any board member to join.Fellowship Hours

Each week, we offer refreshments to our community during Fellowship Hour. All food items are donated by Philoptochos members and our chapter underwrites the cost of the coffee, cups and other supplies. These supplies have increased in cost over the years. The monies that are received weekly, continue to be less than the cost of our supplies for that day. We would like to recommend a minimum $2.00 per person donation to help us cover the cost of the supplies. Fellowship Hours are small fundraisers that helps your Philoptochos support our many charities. Please keep in mind those who benefit from Philoptochos when contributing for your coffee and snack.

Hosting a fellowship hour is a great way to honor a family member or special event. Hosting a fellowship hour means that you provide snacks of your choice. Philoptochos members make the coffee and set-up the food/coffee tables. Contact Debbie Kokalis (415) 367-5252, if you would like to host a fellowship hour.

Sunday of OrthodoxySunday, March 17

”This is the Faith of the Apostles! This is the Faith of the Fathers! This is the Faith of the Orthodox!” An inspiring Sunday of Orthodoxy with our youth processing icons and Marina Scanagatta and Constantine Mavromihalis participating in our Parish St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival.

StewardshipStewardship“One day, a person complained to his priest that the Church and Christianity is one continual “give, give, give.” To which the priest replied, “Thank you very much for the finest definition of Christianity I have ever heard. You’re right, Christianity is all about a constant “give, give, give.” God giving His only Son to the world to show His unconditional love. His Son Jesus giving His life on the cross to forgive our sins and destroy death. Then our Lord’s disciples giving all they had to make sure God’s Good News of love was preached to all people everywhere. They not only gave away their homes and businesses, but even gave up their lives as martyrs in gratitude to God!It is by offering our blessings back to God that He will be able to continue His forgiving, healing, liberating, empowering, transfiguring, loving ministry through the Church. For God, Infinite though He is, has chosen to work through us, through our gifts, to continue His saving work in the world today. “Fr. Anthony M. ConiarisThank you to all who have made their 2019 commitment, your support is vital.  We currently have 190 stewards. Please complete the Stewardship form today with your time, talent, and treasure donations for 2019. Stewardship is your relationship with God. Only you know what your relationship is.
